## About this text

The fortieth supplication of al-Sahifa al-Sajjadiyya, of Imam Zayn al-Abidin (a) — the page's own heading names it "His Supplication when Death was Mentioned".

Its first request is an unusual one: not for a longer life but for a shorter imagination. It asks to be spared drawn-out expectation — the habit of hoping to finish an hour after an hour, a day after a day, of joining a breath to a breath and overtaking a step with a step — and to have that expectancy cut short through sincerity of works instead.

Then it asks for something harder: that death be set before the reciter in plain view, and that the remembering of it not come and go. From there it turns almost warm — that death become an intimate abode, a familiar place, a next of kin whose coming is loved — and closes asking to die guided and not astray, obedient and not averse, repentant and not persisting.

### His Supplication when Death was Mentioned

- Arabic: بِسْمِ اللہِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِیْمِ
- Transliteration: BISMILLAAHIR RAHMAANIR RAHEEM
- English: In the Name of Allah, the most Gracious, the most Merciful.
- Urdu: اللہ کے نام سے (شروع کرتا ہوں) جو بڑا مہربا ن نہایت رحم کرنے والا ہے۔

- Arabic: اَللّٰهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلٰى مُحَمَّدٍ وَّاٰلِهٖ وَاكْفِنَا طُوْلَ الْاَمَلِ وَقَصِّرْهُ عَنَّا بِصِدْقِ الْعَمَلِ حَتّٰى لَا نُؤَمِّلَ اسْتِتْمَامَ سَاعَةٍ بَعْدَ سَاعَةٍ وَلَا اسْتِيْفَاۗءَ يَوْمٍ بَعْدَ يَوْمٍ وَلَا اتِّصَالَ نَفَسٍ بِنَفَسٍ وَلَا لُحُوْقَ قَدَمٍ بِقَدَمٍ وَسَلِّمْنَا مِنْ غُرُوْرِهٖ وَاٰمِنَّا مِنْ شُرُوْرِهٖ وَانْصِبِ الْمَوْتَ بَيْنَ اَيْدِيْنَا نَصْبًا وَلَا تَجْعَلْ ذِكْرَنَا لَهٗ غِبًّا۔
- Transliteration: ALLAAHUMMA SALLI 'ALAA MUHAMMADIN WAAALIHEE WAKFINAA TOOLA AL-AMALI WAQASSIRHU 'ANNAA BISIDQI AL-'AMALI HATTAA LAA NU'AMMILA ASTITMAAMA SAA'ATIN BA'DA SAA'ATIN WALAA ASTEEFAA'A YAWMIN BA'DA YAWMIN WALAA ATTISAALA NAFASIN BINAFASIN WALAA LUHOOQA QADAMIN BIQADAMIN WASALLIMNAA MIN GHUROORIHEE WAAAMINNAA MIN SHUROORIHEE WANSIBI AL-MAWTA BAYNA AYDEENAA NASBAN WALAA TAJ'AL ZIKRANAA LAHOO GHIBBAN.
- English: O God, bless Muhammad and his Household, spare us drawn out expectations and cut them short in us through sincerity of works, that we may not hope expectantly for completing an hour after an hour, closing a day after a day, joining a breath to a breath, or overtaking a step with a step! Keep us safe from the delusions of expectations, make us secure from their evils, set up death before us in display and let not our remembering of it come and go!
- Urdu: اے اللہ!محمد اور ان کی آل پر رحمت نازل فرما اور ہمیں طول طویل امیدوں سے بچائے رکھ اور پر خلوص اعمال کے بجا لانے سے دامن امید کو کوتاہ کر دے تا کہ ہم ایک گھڑی کے بعد دوسری سانس کے آنے اورایک قدم کے بعد دوسرے قدم کے اٹھنے کی آس نہ رکھیں۔ ہمیں فریب آرزو اور فتنہ امید سے محفوظ ومامون رکھ اورموت کو ہمارا نصب العین قرار دے اورکسی دن بھی ہمیں اس کی یاد سے خالی نہ رہنے دے۔

- Arabic: وَاجْعَلْ لَنَا مِنْ صَالِحِ الْاَعْمَالِ عَمَلًا نَسْتَبْطِیُٔ مَعَهُ الْمَصِيْرَ اِلَيْكَ وَنَحْرِصُ لَهٗ عَلٰى وَشْكِ اللَّحَاقِ بِكَ حَتّٰى يَكُوْنَ الْمَوْتُ مَانَسَنَا الَّذِيْ نَانَسُ بِهٖ وَمَالَفَنَا الَّذِيْ نَشْتَاقُ اِلَيْهِ وَحَاۗمَّتَنَا الَّتِيْ نُحِبُّ الدُّنُوَّ مِنْهَا۔
- Transliteration: WAJ'AL LANAA MIN SAALIHI AL-A'MAALI 'AMALAN NASTABTIY MA'AHU AL-MASEERA ILAYKA WANAHRISU LAHOO 'ALAA WASHKI AL-LAHAAQI BIKA HATTAA YAKOONA AL-MAWTU MAANASANAA ALLAZEE NAANASU BIHEE WAMAALAFANAA ALLAZEE NASHTAAQU ILAYHI WAHAAMMATANAA ALLATEE NUHIBBU AD-DUNUWWA MINHAA.
- English: Appoint for us from among the righteous works a work through which we will feel the homecoming to Thee as slow and crave a quick joining with Thee, so that death may be our intimate abode with which we are intimate, our familiar place toward which we yearn, and our next of kin whose coming we love!
- Urdu: اور نیک اعمال میں سے ہمیں ایسے عمل خیر کی توفیق دے جس کے ہوتے ہوئے ہم تیری جانب باز گشت میں دیری محسوس کریں اور جلد سے جلد تیری بارگاہ میں حاضر ہونے کے آرزو مند ہوں۔ اس حد تک کہ موت ہمارے انس کی منزل ہوجائے جس سے ہم جی لگائیں اور الفت کی جگہ بن جاۓ جس کے ہم مشتاق ہوں اور ایسی عزیز ہو جس کے قرب کو ہم پسند کریں۔

- Arabic: فَاِذَا اَوْرَدْتَهٗ عَلَيْنَا وَاَنْزَلْتَهٗ بِنَا فَاَسْعِدْنَا بِهٖ زَاۗئِرًا وَاٰنِسْنَا بِهٖ قَادِمًا وَلَا تُشْقِنَا بِضِيَافَتِهٖ وَلَا تُخْزِنَا بِزِيَارَتِهٖ وَاجْعَلْهُ بَابًا مِنْ اَبْوَابِ مَغْفِرَتِكَ وَمِفْتَاحًا مِنْ مَفَاتِيْحِ رَحْمَتِكَ اَمِتْنَا مُهْتَدِيْنَ غَيْرَ ضَاۗلِّيْنَ طَاۗئِعِيْنَ غَيْرَ مُسْتَكْرِهِيْنَ تَاۗئِبِيْنَ غَيْرَ عَاصِيْنَ وَلَا مُصِرِّيْنَ يَا ضَامِنَ جَزَاۗءِ الْمُحْسِنِيْنَ وَمُسْتَصْلِحَ عَمَلِ الْمُفْسِدِيْنَ۔
- Transliteration: FAIZAA AWRADTAHOO 'ALAYNAA WAANZALTAHOO BINAA FAAS'IDNAA BIHEE ZAA'IRAN WAAANISNAA BIHEE QAADIMAN WALAA TUSHQINAA BIDIYAAFATIHEE WALAA TUKHZINAA BIZIYAARATIHEE WAJ'ALHU BAABAN MIN ABWAABI MAGHFIRATIKA WAMIFTAAHAN MIN MAFAATEEHI RAHMATIKA AMITNAA MUHTADEENA GHAYRA DAALLEENA TAA'I'EENA GHAYRA MUSTAKRIHEENA TAA'IBEENA GHAYRA 'AASEENA WALAA MUSIRREENA YAA DAAMINA JAZAA'I AL-MUHSINEENA WAMUSTASLIHA 'AMALI AL-MUFSIDEENA.
- English: When Thou bringest it to us and sendest it down upon us, make us happy with it as a visitor, comfort us with its arrival, make us not wretched through entertaining it, degrade us not through its visit, and appoint it one of the gates to Thy forgiveness and the keys to Thy mercy! Make us die guided, not astray, obedient, not averse, repentant, not disobedient or persisting, O He who guarantees the repayment of the good-doers and seeks to set right the work of the corrupt!
- Urdu: جب تو اسے ہم پر وارد کرے اور ہم پر لا اتارے تو اس کی ملاقات کے ذریعہ ہمیں سعادت مند بنایا اور جب وہ آئے تو ہمیں اس سے مانوس کرنا اوراس کی مہمانی سے ہمیں بد بخت نہ قرار دینا اور نہ اس کی ملاقات سے ہم کو رسوا کرنا۔ اوراسے اپنی مغفرت کے دروازوں میں سے ایک دروازہ اور رحمت کی کنجیوں میں سے ایک کلید قرار دے اورہمیں اس حالت میں موت آئے کہ ہم ہدایت یافتہ ہوں گمراہ نہ ہوں فرمانبردار ہوں اور (موت سے) نفرت کرنے والے نہ ہوں۔ توبہ گزار ہوں خطا کار اور گناہ پر اصرار کرنے والے نہ ہوں۔ اے نیکو کاروں کے اجر وثواب کا ذمہ لینے والے اور بدکرداروں کے عمل وکردار کی اصلاح کرنے والے۔

- Arabic: اَللّٰهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلٰى مُحَمَّدٍ وَّآلِ مُحَمَّدٍ۔
- Transliteration: ALLAHUMMA SWALLE ALAA MUHAMMADIW WA AALE MUHAMMADIN
- English: Allah’s (s.w.t) choicest blessings be upon Mohammed and his holy progeny.
- Urdu: اے معبود! رحمت نازل فرما حضرت محمدؐ اور انکی آل ؑپر۔
