## Text

- Instruction: Lady Fatima (pbuh) had experienced only a few springs of life when an event occurred that left a profound impact upon her existence and that event was the passing of the Messenger of Islam (pbuh). During the Prophet’s illness, Lady az-Zahra (pbuh) remained constantly at his side, serving and caring for him. When she heard the blessed Prophet utter the words, “Your grief and sorrow…”, she cried out in a pain-filled voice, “What grief and sorrow?” Seeing the distressed state of his daughter, the Messenger of Allah became concerned for her condition. In order to comfort her heart, he said: “O my daughter, after today do not grieve for your father.”

- Instruction: Lady Fatima az-Zahra (pbuh) began to recall that her father had spoken to her in a very confidential manner, saying: “My daughter, the time of your passing is also near, and you will be the first among the Ahlul-Bayt (pbut) to meet me.” She also remembered that the Prophet had given her glad tidings, saying: “O Fatima, are you not pleased that you are the leader of the women of all the worlds?” After the passing of her father, Lady az-Zahra (pbuh) was never seen laughing again. Rather, she wept so much that she came to be counted among the six most prolific mourners in history. She cried so intensely that the people of Madinah, distressed by her constant grief, asked that she either weep during the day or during the night. Eventually, Sayyidah Fatima would go to Jannat al-Baqi to mourn and weep. On one occasion, grieving deeply over her father, she recited the following verses…

- Instruction: What concern has one who inhales the fragrance of the dust of the Prophet as though never in a lifetime has such a fragrance been breathed? O you who have hidden your radiant face beneath the earth, tell me do you hear the cries and lamentations of my anguished heart? Calamities have befallen me such that, had they fallen upon bright days, they would have turned them into dark nights. As long as I remained under the shade of the Prophet and within his protection and support, I feared no enemy nor any bearer of malice. But today I stand humbled before ignoble people, afraid that injustice may be done to me, while I defend myself alone. When birds raise cries and lament from their nests in the depths of the night, I too repeatedly sigh and wail. O dear father, I have taken your sorrows as my constant companion, and in mourning you, grief has become inseparably bound to my very being.

- Instruction: Lady Fatima az-Zahra (pbuh) wept profusely over the passing of her compassionate and kind father. The sorrows and sighs rising from the depths of her heart would scatter into the open air. When the body of the Messenger of Islam (pbuh) had been lowered into the grave, she said to one of the companions: “How could your heart consent to pour heaps of earth over the Messenger of Allah?” Then she suddenly raised a cry of lament: “The horizons of the heavens have been torn apart, the sun has been plunged into darkness in the daytime, and the days have taken on the likeness of dark nights. The earth, after his passing, was filled with grief in mourning for him and trembled in sorrow.”
