# Attending the Funeral

## About this text

The words said on attending a funeral, and among the shortest things in this section.

It is a single verse of the Qur'an (2:201) and nothing else: "Our Lord, grant us good in this world and good in the Hereafter, and save us from the punishment of the Fire."

The choice is the point. Standing at a janaza, the tradition puts in the mourner's mouth not a lament but the prayer that asks for both worlds at once.

## Text

- Arabic: بِسْمِ اللہِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِیْمِ
- Transliteration: BISMILLAAHIR RAHMAANIR RAHEEM
- English: In the Name of Allah, the most Gracious, the most Merciful.
- Urdu: اللہ کے نام سے (شروع کرتا ہوں) جو بڑا مہربا ن نہایت رحم کرنے والا ہے۔

- Arabic: رَبَّنَآ اٰتِنَا فِي الدُّنْيَا حَسَنَةً وَّفِي الْاٰخِرَةِ حَسَنَةً وَّقِنَا عَذَابَ النَّارِ۔
- Transliteration: RABBANA AATENA FID DUNIYA HASANATANW WA FIL AAKHERATE HASANATANW WA QENA AZAABAN NAAR.
- English: Our Lord! grant us good in this world and good in the hereafter and save us from the chastisement of the fire.
- Urdu: اے میرے پروردگار! ہمیں دنیا میں بھی نیکیاں عطا کر اور آخرت میں بھی، اور ہمیں عذابِ جہنم سے بچا۔

- Arabic: اَللّٰهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلٰى مُحَمَّدٍ وَّآلِ مُحَمَّدٍ۔
- Transliteration: ALLAHUMMA SWALLE ALAA MUHAMMADIW WA AALE MUHAMMADIN
- English: Allah’s (s.w.t) choicest blessings be upon Mohammed and his holy progeny.
- Urdu: اے معبود! رحمت نازل فرما حضرت محمدؐ اور انکی آل ؑپر۔
