# Month of Safar **Urdu title:** ماہِ سفر **Section:** Dua -- Fatima Zahra Imamia Centre devotional library **Page:** https://fzic.org/library/dua/month-of-safar-2341 ## Text ### Pilgrimage of Imam Reza (a) on the Day of his Martyrdom - Instruction: Allamah Majlisi (r) reports: There are certain exclusively meritorious days whereupon visiting the shrine of Imam Reza (a) carry more rewards. Specially the days which are specified with Imam Reza (a) as the day of his birth i.e. 11th of Zilqad, the day of his martyrdom i.e. final day of the month of Safar or 14th of the month of Ramazan and when pledge of his allegiance was made i.e. 1st or 6th of month of Ramazan So visiting the shrine of Imam Reza (a) on the last day and 17th of Safar (according to a tradition the day of martyrdom of Imam Reza (a)) carries great merits. - Instruction (Urdu): علامہ مجلسیؒ نقل کرتے ہیں کہ کچھ دن ایسے ہیں جو خاص طور پر بہت زیادہ فضیلت رکھتے ہیں، اور اُن دنوں میں امام رضاؑ کی زیارت کا ثواب اور زیادہ ہوتا ہے۔ خاص طور پر وہ دن جو امام رضاؑ کے ساتھ مخصوص کیے گئے ہیں، جیسے: یومِ ولادت: ۱۱؍ذیقعد یومِ شہادت: ماہِ صفر کا آخری دن (اور بعض روایات میں ۱۷؍صفر بھی شہادت کا دن بتایا گیا ہے)، ایک اور تاریخِ شہادت: بعض نقل کے مطابق۱۴؍رمضان، بیعت / عہد (ولی عہدی / بیعت) کا دن: ۱؍رمضان یا ۶؍رمضان اس لیے صفر کے آخری دن اور ۱۷؍صفر (ایک روایت کے مطابق امام رضاؑ کی شہادت کے دن) میں زیارت کی بڑی فضیلت بیان ہوئی ہے۔ ### Circumstances Under Which Imam Reza (a) was Martyred and Buried - Instruction: Aba Salt al-Harawi said, “I was standing in front of Imam Reza (a) when he told me, ‘O Aba Salt! Go into this mausoleum where Harun’s grave is located. Pick a handful of dirt from each corner and bring them to me.’ I went and did what Imam Reza (a) had asked me to do. Then when I stood up in front of Imam Reza (a) again, he (a) was standing near the door. I handed him the dirt one handful at a time. He smelled each one and threw it away. Then he (a) said, ‘Here they will dig up a grave for me. A rock will appear which they will not be able to remove, even if they bring all the mattocks in Khorasan.’ Then Imam Reza (a) said the same things about the dirt at the positions of the head and the feet of Harun. Then Imam Reza (a) said, ‘Give me that other handful of dirt.’ I handed him the dirt from the front of Harun’s grave. Imam Reza (a) took it and said, ‘This is the dirt that will be the dirt of my grave.’ - Instruction (Urdu): ابا صلت ہروی کہتے ہیں: میں امام رضاؑ کے سامنے کھڑا تھا کہ امامؑ نے مجھ سے فرمایا: اے ابا صلت! اس مقبرے کے اندر چلے جاؤ جہاں ہارون کی قبر ہے۔ چاروں کونوں سے مٹی کی ایک ایک مٹھی اٹھاؤ اور میرے پاس لے آؤ۔ میں گیا اور جیسا امامؑ نے فرمایا تھا ویسا ہی کیا۔ پھر میں واپس امام رضاؑ کے پاس آیا۔ اس وقت امامؑ دروازے کے قریب کھڑے تھے۔ میں نے مٹی کی مٹھیاں ایک ایک کر کے امامؑ کو دیں۔ امامؑ ہر مٹھی کو سونگھتے اور پھر اسے پھینک دیتے۔ پھر امامؑ نے فرمایا: یہیں میرے لیے قبر کھودی جائے گی۔ اور ایک چٹان / پتھر ظاہر ہوگا جسے وہ نکال نہیں سکیں گے، چاہے خراسان کے سارے کدال / اوزار بھی لے آئیں۔ پھر امامؑ نے ہارون کی قبر کے سرہانے اور پایاں کی جگہ والی مٹی کے بارے میں بھی اسی طرح کی بات فرمائی۔ اس کے بعد امامؑ نے فرمایا: وہ دوسری مٹھی مٹی مجھے دو۔ میں نے ہارون کی قبر کے سامنے سے لی ہوئی مٹی انہیں دی۔ امام رضاؑ نے اسے لیا اور فرمایا: یہ وہ مٹی ہے جو میری قبر کی مٹی ہوگی۔ - Instruction: Then Imam Reza (a) said, ‘They will dig a grave for me in this place. You must order them to dig it seven steps deep. Then you must ask them to extend the grave in one direction and construct a grave. If they refuse to do so and insist that it must be a usual type of grave, you will tell them that the grave must be as wide as the size of two arms long plus the span of one wide open hand. Indeed Allah (swt) will extend it as much as He wills. Once they do so, you will notice water there. Recite what I teach you and then the grave will be filled with water. You will see many small fish in it. Then you must feed them with pieces of the bread which I’ll give you now. Once they eat it all up, a large fish will appear and eat up all the small fish until they all disappear. Then the large fish will disappear too. Then you must put your hand in the water and recite what I’ll teach you now. Then the water will drain away and nothing will be left. Do not do this except in the presence of Mamoon.’ - Instruction (Urdu): پھر امام رضاؑ نے فرمایا: وہ اسی جگہ میرے لیے قبر کھودیں گے۔ تمہیں چاہیے کہ تم انہیں حکم دو کہ قبر کو سات ہاتھ (قدم) گہرا کھودیں۔ پھر تم انہیں یہ بھی کہنا کہ قبر کو ایک سمت میں پھیلا کر مزید جگہ بنائیں اور قبر کو وسیع کریں۔ اگر وہ یہ ماننے سے انکار کریں اور کہیں کہ قبر تو عام طرح ہی بنے گی، تو تم انہیں کہنا کہ قبر کی چوڑائی دو بازو کے برابر اور اس کے ساتھ ایک کھلے ہوئے ہاتھ کے برابر ہو۔ بے شک اللہ تعالیٰ اسے جتنا چاہے وسیع کر دے گا۔ جب وہ ایسا کریں گے تو تم وہاں پانی دیکھو گے۔ جو بات میں تمہیں سکھاؤں، وہ پڑھنا (پڑھ کر دعا کرنا) تو قبر پانی سے بھر جائے گی۔ تم اس میں بہت سی چھوٹی مچھلیاں دیکھو گے۔ پھر تم ان کو اس روٹی کے ٹکڑوں سے کھلانا جو میں ابھی تمہیں دوں گا۔ جب وہ سب روٹی کھا لیں گی تو ایک بڑی مچھلی ظاہر ہوگی اور وہ ساری چھوٹی مچھلیوں کو کھا جائے گی، یہاں تک کہ وہ سب غائب ہو جائیں گی۔ پھر وہ بڑی مچھلی بھی غائب ہو جائے گی۔ اس کے بعد تم اپنا ہاتھ پانی میں ڈالنا اور وہ بات پڑھنا جو میں تمہیں ابھی سکھاؤں۔ پھر وہ پانی اتر جائے گا اور کچھ باقی نہیں رہے گا۔ اور یہ سب کام مامون کی موجودگی کے بغیر ہرگز نہ کرنا۔ - Instruction: Then Imam Reza (a) added, ‘O Aba Salt! Tomorrow I shall go to see this adulterer (referring to Mamoon)! If I leave there with a bare head, talk to me and I will respond. However, if when I return my head is covered, then do not talk to me.’” Aba Salt continued, “When the morning came, Imam Reza (a) put on his clothes and sat down, waiting in his prayer niche. Mamoon’s servant entered after a while and said, ‘The Commander of the Faithful (Mamoon) has called you in.’ Then Imam Reza (a) put on his shoes and cloak. He stood up and went. I followed Imam Reza (a) until he went to Mamoon. There was a dish of grapes in front of Mamoon and several dishes of fruits too. There was a bunch of partially eaten grapes in his hand. There were still some grapes left on it. Once Mamoon saw Imam Reza (a), he leaped towards him and hugged him. He kissed his forehead and had him sit down next to himself. Then he offered Imam Reza (a) the bunch of grapes that he was holding in his hands and said, ‘O son of Allah’s Prophet (s)! Have you ever seen any better grapes?’ Then Imam Reza (a) told him, ‘It often happens that they are good grapes as if they are from Heaven.’ - Instruction (Urdu): پھر امام رضاؑ نے مزید فرمایا: اے ابا صلت! کل میں اس زانی کے پاس جاؤں گا (یعنی مامون کی طرف اشارہ کرتے ہوئے)۔ اگر میں وہاں سے ننگے سر واپس آؤں تو مجھ سے بات کرنا، میں جواب دوں گا۔ لیکن اگر میں واپس آؤں اور میرا سر ڈھکا ہوا ہو تو پھر مجھ سے بات نہ کرنا۔ ابا صلت کہتے ہیں: جب صبح ہوئی تو امام رضاؑ نے کپڑے پہنے اور مصلّے / محراب میں بیٹھ گئے اور انتظار کرنے لگے۔ تھوڑی دیر بعد مامون کا خادم آیا اور بولا: ‘امیرالمؤمنین (مامون) نے آپ کو بلایا ہے۔ پھر امام رضاؑ نے جوتے اور چادر / عبا پہنی، اٹھے اور چل پڑے۔ میں بھی امام رضاؑ کے پیچھے پیچھے گیا یہاں تک کہ آپ مامون کے پاس پہنچ گئے۔ مامون کے سامنے انگوروں کی ایک پلیٹ رکھی تھی اور کئی اور پھل بھی تھے۔ اس کے ہاتھ میں آدھا کھایا ہوا خوشۂ انگور تھا جس میں ابھی کچھ انگور باقی تھے۔ جب مامون نے امام رضاؑ کو دیکھا تو وہ فوراً آگے بڑھا، امامؑ کو گلے لگایا، پیشانی کو بوسہ دیا، اور انہیں اپنے پاس بٹھایا۔ پھر اس نے وہی خوشۂ انگور امامؑ کو پیش کیا اور کہا: ‘اے رسولِ خداؐ کے فرزند! کیا آپ نے کبھی اس سے بہتر انگور دیکھے ہیں؟ امام رضاؑ نے فرمایا: ‘اکثر ایسا ہوتا ہے کہ یہ انگور بہت اچھے ہوتے ہیں، گویا یہ جنت کے انگور ہوں۔ - Instruction: Then Mamoon said, ‘Have some.’ But Imam Reza (a) told him, ‘Excuse me from eating them.’ Then he said, ‘You must eat. Why don’t you eat? Perhaps you are suspicious of me.’ Then Mamoon picked up the bunch of grapes, had a few grapes and then offered the bunch to Imam Reza (a). Imam Reza (a) ate three grapes, put down the bunch and stood up. Mamoon asked him, ‘Where are you going?’ He (a) said, ‘I am going to where you sent me.’ Imam Reza (a) pulled his cloak over his head and left.” Aba Salt added, “I did not talk to Imam Reza (a) until he entered the house and said, ‘Shut the doors.’ They shut the doors. Then Imam Reza (a) laid in bed. I stayed in the yard for a while in a sad and depressed state. Then I saw a handsome young man, who was the closest-looking person to Imam Reza (a), I have ever seen, enter the house. I rushed ahead and asked him, ‘Sir! The doors are closed. How did you get in?’ He (a) answered, ‘He (Allah) who passed me through closed doors brought me here from Madinah.’ I asked, ‘Who are you?’ He (a) replied, ‘I am the Proof of Allah for you. O Aba Salt! I am Muhammad ibn Ali (Imam al-Reza (a)’s son).’ Then he (a) went to his father (a). He (a) entered the room and asked me to go in with him. - Instruction (Urdu): پھر مامون نے کہا: کچھ کھائیے۔ مگر امام رضاؑ نے فرمایا: مجھے معاف کیجیے، میں یہ نہیں کھاؤں گا۔ مامون نے کہا: آپ کو ضرور کھانا ہوگا۔ آپ کیوں نہیں کھاتے؟ شاید آپ کو مجھ پر شک ہے! پھر مامون نے انگوروں کا خوشہ اٹھایا، چند انگور خود کھائے، پھر وہ خوشہ امام رضاؑ کو پیش کر دیا۔ امام رضاؑ نے تین انگور کھائے، خوشہ رکھ دیا اور کھڑے ہو گئے۔ مامون نے پوچھا: آپ کہاں جا رہے ہیں؟ امامؑ نے فرمایا: میں اُسی طرف جا رہا ہوں جہاں تو نے مجھے بھیجا ہے۔ پھر امام رضاؑ نے اپنی چادر / عبا سر پر ڈال لی اور وہاں سے چلے گئے۔ ابا صلت کہتے ہیں: میں نے امام رضاؑ سے کوئی بات نہ کی یہاں تک کہ وہ گھر میں داخل ہوئے اور فرمایا: ‘دروازے بند کر دو۔ دروازے بند کر دیے گئے۔ پھر امام رضاؑ بستر پر لیٹ گئے۔ میں کچھ دیر صحن میں غمگین اور دل گرفتہ حالت میں بیٹھا رہا۔ اسی دوران میں نے ایک خوبصورت نوجوان کو دیکھا، جو شکل و صورت میں امام رضاؑ سے سب سے زیادہ مشابہ تھا، وہ گھر میں داخل ہوا۔ میں فوراً اس کی طرف لپکا اور کہا: ‘جناب! دروازے تو بند ہیں، آپ اندر کیسے آئے؟ اس نے جواب دیا: ‘جس (اللہ) نے مجھے بند دروازوں سے گزارا، وہی مجھے مدینہ سے یہاں لے آیا ہے۔ میں نے پوچھا: ‘آپ کون ہیں؟ انہوں نے فرمایا: ‘میں تم پر اللہ کی حجت ہوں۔ اے ابا صلت! میں محمد بن علی ہوں (یعنی امام رضاؑ کے فرزند، امام جوادؑ)۔ پھر وہ اپنے والد (امام رضاؑ) کے پاس گئے۔ وہ کمرے میں داخل ہوئے اور مجھے بھی کہا کہ میں ان کے ساتھ اندر آ جاؤں۔ - Instruction: When Imam Reza (a) saw him, he leaped towards him. Imam Reza (a) hugged him and put his hands over his shoulders. Then Imam Reza (a) kissed him on the forehead and went back to his couch with him. Muhammad ibn Ali (a) went over to him, kissed him and quietly told him things which I could not hear. However, I could see some foam on Imam Reza (a)’s lips that was even whiter than snow. Imam Muhammad ibn Ali (a) wiped it off with his tongue. Then Imam Reza (a) placed his hand within his attire over his heart and brought out something like a sparrow. Then Imam Muhammad ibn Ali (a) swallowed it. Then Imam Reza (a) passed away. Then Imam Muhammad ibn Ali (a) said, ‘O Aba Salt! Stand up. Go and bring me water and the wash basin from the cabinet.’ I answered, ‘There is no wash basin in the cabinet and there is no water there either.” However, Imam Muhammad ibn Ali (a) said, ‘Go and do what I ordered you to do.’ I went to the cabinet and saw that both water and the wash basin were available there. I brought them out. Then I tied up my robe to my waist and took off my footwear to get ready to wash Imam Reza (a). - Instruction (Urdu): جب امام رضاؑ نے انہیں (محمد بن علیؑ) دیکھا تو فوراً ان کی طرف بڑھے۔ امام رضاؑ نے انہیں گلے لگایا اور اپنے ہاتھ ان کے کندھوں پر رکھ دیے۔ پھر امام رضاؑ نے ان کی پیشانی کو بوسہ دیا اور انہیں ساتھ لے کر اپنے تخت / بستر کی طرف واپس آئے۔ محمد بن علیؑ امامؑ کے قریب گئے، انہیں بوسہ دیا اور آہستگی سے کچھ باتیں کیں جو میں نہ سن سکا۔ مگر میں نے دیکھا کہ امام رضاؑ کے ہونٹوں پر جھاگ سا تھا جو برف سے بھی زیادہ سفید تھا۔ امام محمد بن علیؑ نے اسے اپنی زبان سے صاف کر دیا۔ پھر امام رضاؑ نے اپنا ہاتھ اپنے لباس کے اندر دل کے پاس رکھا اور وہاں سے چڑیا کے بچے جیسی کوئی چیز نکالی۔ پھر امام محمد بن علیؑ نے اسے نگل لیا۔ اس کے بعد امام رضاؑ اس دنیا سے رخصت ہو گئے۔ پھر امام محمد بن علیؑ نے فرمایا: اے ابا صلت! اٹھو، جا کر الماری / کابینہ سے پانی اور طشت لے آؤ۔ میں نے عرض کیا: کابینہ میں نہ طشت ہے نہ پانی۔ لیکن امام محمد بن علیؑ نے فرمایا: جاؤ، وہی کرو جو میں نے حکم دیا ہے۔ میں کابینہ کی طرف گیا تو دیکھا کہ وہاں پانی بھی موجود ہے اور طشت بھی۔ میں انہیں لے آیا۔ پھر میں نے غسل (تغسیل) کی تیاری کے لیے اپنی چادر / لباس کو کمر سے باندھا اور جوتے اتار دیے تاکہ امام رضاؑ کو غسل دے سکوں۔ - Instruction: But Imam Muhammad ibn Ali (a) told me, “O Aba Salt! Move aside. There is someone else here who will assist me.’’ Then Imam Muhammad ibn Ali (a) performed the ceremonial burial ablutions for Imam Reza (a) and told me, ‘Go to the cabinet and bring me the basket in which there is a shroud and embalmment.’ I went to the cabinet. There I saw a basket which I had never seen before. I picked it up and brought it to him. Imam Muhammad ibn Ali (a) shrouded the Imam (a) and prayed for him. Then he (a) told me, ‘Bring me that coffin.’ Then I asked, ‘Should I go to a carpenter and have him make a coffin?’ Imam Muhammad ibn Ali (a) said, ‘No. Go to the cabinet. There is a coffin there.’ I went to the cabinet and found that there was a coffin which I had never seen before. I picked it up and brought it to him. - Instruction (Urdu): لیکن امام محمد بن علیؑ نے مجھ سے فرمایا: اے ابا صلت! ذرا ہٹ جاؤ۔ یہاں ایک اور شخص بھی موجود ہے جو میری مدد کرے گا۔ پھر امام محمد بن علیؑ نے امام رضاؑ کو غسلِ میّت دیا اور مجھ سے فرمایا: الماری / کابینہ سے وہ ٹوکری لے آؤ جس میں کفن اور حنوط (خوشبو / کافور وغیرہ لگانے کا سامان) ہے۔ میں کابینہ کی طرف گیا۔ وہاں میں نے ایک ایسی ٹوکری دیکھی جو میں نے پہلے کبھی نہیں دیکھی تھی۔ میں نے اسے اٹھایا اور امامؑ کے پاس لے آیا۔ پھر امام محمد بن علیؑ نے امام رضاؑ کو کفن پہنایا اور ان پر نمازِ میّت پڑھی۔ اس کے بعد انہوں نے فرمایا: وہ تابوت لے آؤ۔ میں نے عرض کیا: کیا میں بڑھئی کے پاس جا کر تابوت بنواؤں؟ امام محمد بن علیؑ نے فرمایا: نہیں۔ کابینہ میں جاؤ، وہاں تابوت موجود ہے۔ میں کابینہ میں گیا تو وہاں ایک تابوت تھا جو میں نے پہلے کبھی نہیں دیکھا تھا۔ میں نے اسے اٹھایا اور امامؑ کے پاس لے آیا۔ - Instruction: Imam Muhammad ibn Ali (a) lifted Imam Reza (a) after praying for him and placed him in the coffin. He (a) put Imam Reza (a)’s feet side by side and said 2 rakats namaz. Then before finishing his prayers the ceiling of the room was rent as under and the coffin was flown out of the room from the ceiling. Then I said, ‘O son of the Prophet of Allah (s)! Now Mamoon will come here and demand Imam Reza (a) from us. What should we do?’ Imam Muhammad ibn Ali (a) said, ‘O Aba Salt! Be quiet! The body will return. Allah units the body and the spirit together of any Prophet who dies in the East and any of his Trustees who die in the West.’ Imam Muhammad ibn Ali (a) had not finished talking when the ceiling was again rent asunder, and the coffin and the body descended. Then Imam Muhammad ibn Ali (a) stood up, brought the corpse out of the coffin and placed it in bed as if it had neither been washed nor shrouded. Then he (a) said to me, ‘O Aba Salt! Stand up and open the door for Mamoon.’ Then I opened the door. - Instruction (Urdu): امام محمد بن علیؑ نے امام رضاؑ پر نماز پڑھنے کے بعد ان کے جسمِ مبارک کو اٹھایا اور انہیں تابوت میں رکھ دیا۔ پھر انہوں نے امام رضاؑ کے قدم برابر کیے اور دو رکعت نماز پڑھی۔ پھر ابھی وہ نماز مکمل بھی نہ کر پائے تھے کہ کمرے کی چھت پھٹ گئی اور تابوت چھت کے راستے کمرے سے باہر چلا گیا۔ میں نے عرض کیا: اے فرزندِ رسولؐ! اب مامون آئے گا اور ہم سے امام رضاؑ کا جسدِ مبارک مانگے گا، ہم کیا کریں؟ امام محمد بن علیؑ نے فرمایا: اے ابا صلت! خاموش رہو! جسد واپس آ جائے گا۔ اللہ تعالیٰ ہر اس نبی کے جسم اور روح کو دوبارہ ملا دیتا ہے جو مشرق میں فوت ہو، اور اس کے ہر وصی / جانشین کے جسم اور روح کو بھی جو مغرب میں فوت ہو۔ ابھی امام محمد بن علیؑ کی بات مکمل بھی نہ ہوئی تھی کہ چھت دوبارہ پھٹی، اور تابوت اور جسد نیچے اتر آئے۔ پھر امام محمد بن علیؑ کھڑے ہوئے، جسدِ مبارک کو تابوت سے نکالا اور بستر پر اس طرح لٹا دیا گویا نہ انہیں غسل دیا گیا ہو اور نہ کفن پہنایا گیا ہو۔ پھر انہوں نے مجھ سے فرمایا: اے ابا صلت! اٹھو اور مامون کے لیے دروازہ کھول دو۔ تو میں نے دروازہ کھول دیا۔ - Instruction: Mamoon and his servants were standing at the door. He entered while he was in a sad state and crying. He tore his shirt and hit himself on the head. He said, ‘O descendant of the Prophet Muhammad (s)! O my Master! Your death is a great calamity for me.’ Then Mamoon entered and sat next to Imam Reza (a)’s head and said, ‘Start to prepare him.’ Then Mamoon ordered that a grave be dug. I (Aba Salt) dug at the location that Imam Reza (a) had ordered me before to do so. Exactly whatever Imam Reza (a) had said would appear. One of Mamoon’s companion asked him, ‘Don’t you say and don’t you believe that he was a Divine Leader?’ Mamoon replied, ‘Yes. He would not be a Divine Leader unless he is superior to all the people.’ Then Mamoon ordered that a grave be dug for Imam Reza (a) facing the direction of the Qibla.” - Instruction (Urdu): مامون اور اس کے خادم دروازے پر کھڑے تھے۔ مامون غمگین حالت میں روتا ہوا اندر داخل ہوا۔ اس نے اپنا کرتا / قمیص پھاڑ ڈالا اور اپنے سر پر ہاتھ مارنے لگا۔ پھر کہنے لگا: اے رسولِ خداؐ کی نسل! اے میرے آقا! آپ کی وفات میرے لیے بہت بڑی مصیبت ہے! پھر مامون اندر آیا، امام رضاؑ کے سرہانے بیٹھا اور کہا: اب ان کی تیاری شروع کرو۔ اس کے بعد مامون نے حکم دیا کہ قبر کھودی جائے۔ میں (ابا صلت) نے اُسی جگہ کھودنا شروع کیا جس جگہ امام رضاؑ نے مجھے پہلے حکم دیا تھا۔ بالکل ویسا ہی ہوا جیسا امام رضاؑ نے فرمایا تھا۔ مامون کے ساتھیوں میں سے ایک نے اس سے کہا: کیا تم یہ نہیں کہتے اور کیا تم ایمان نہیں رکھتے کہ وہ (امام رضاؑ) خدا کے مقرر کردہ رہبر تھے؟ مامون نے جواب دیا: ہاں! وہ خدا کے مقرر کردہ رہبر نہ ہوتے اگر وہ سب لوگوں سے افضل نہ ہوتے۔ پھر مامون نے حکم دیا کہ امام رضاؑ کے لیے قبر قبلہ رُخ کھودی جائے۔ - Instruction: Aba Salt added, “Then I said, ‘Imam Reza (a) has ordered me to dig down about seven steps. Then I must extend the grave for his tomb in one direction.’ Mamoon ordered the workers, ‘Do as Aba Salt says except for the tomb. Dig a usual type of grave.’ However, once Mamoon saw that the water appeared, the fish showed up, and the other things happened, Mamoon said, ‘Imam Reza (a) continuously showed us miracles during his lifetime. We even see miracles after his death.’ One of the ministers who was there asked, ‘Do you know what Imam Reza (a) is informing you about?’ - Instruction (Urdu): ابا صلت کہتے ہیں: پھر میں نے کہا: ‘امام رضاؑ نے مجھے حکم دیا تھا کہ قبر کو تقریباً سات قدم / ہاتھ گہرا کھودوں، پھر قبر کو ایک طرف پھیلا کر ان کے لیے لحد / تربت بناؤں۔ مامون نے مزدوروں سے کہا: ‘ابا صلت جو کہہ رہا ہے وہی کرو، لیکن لحد (خاص طرز کی قبر) نہ بنانا۔ بس عام قبر کھودو۔ لیکن جب مامون نے دیکھا کہ پانی ظاہر ہوا، مچھلیاں نظر آئیں، اور باقی باتیں بھی ویسے ہی ہوئیں، تو مامون نے کہا: ‘امام رضاؑ نے اپنی زندگی میں ہمیں مسلسل معجزات دکھائے۔ ہم ان کے بعد بھی معجزات دیکھ رہے ہیں۔ وہاں موجود ایک وزیر نے پوچھا: ‘کیا تم جانتے ہو کہ امام رضاؑ تمہیں کس بات کی خبر دے رہے ہیں؟ - Instruction: Mamoon replied, ‘No.’ The minister said, ‘Imam Reza (a) is trying to make you understand that the rule of you, the Abbasids, and your population and the extent of your rule is like these fish, until your time is over and your death arrives. Then you will lose your reign. Then Allah, the Highest, will designate a man from the Members of the Holy Household of the Holy Prophet (s) as the ruler over you who will destroy all of you, from the first to the last one of you.’ Mamoon replied, ‘You are right.’ Then Mamoon turned towards Aba Salt and said, ‘O Aba Salt! Tell me the words you recited which caused the big fish to swallow the little fish. Teach them to me.’ I replied, ‘By Allah, I have forgotten them now.’ I had said the truth but he ordered that I be thrown into jail. - Instruction (Urdu): مامون نے جواب دیا: نہیں۔ وزیر نے کہا: امام رضاؑ تمہیں یہ سمجھانا چاہتے ہیں کہ تمہاری حکومت یعنی عباسیوں کی حکومت، تمہاری طاقت، تمہاری رعایا اور تمہارے اقتدار کی حد ان مچھلیوں کی طرح ہے، یہاں تک کہ تمہارا وقت پورا ہو جائے اور تمہاری موت آ جائے۔ پھر تمہاری سلطنت چھن جائے گی۔ پھر اللہ تعالیٰ رسولِ خداؐ کے اہلِ بیتؑ میں سے ایک شخص کو تم پر حاکم مقرر کرے گا، جو تم سب کو، تمہارے پہلے سے لے کر آخری تک، ختم کر دے گا۔ مامون نے کہا: تم ٹھیک کہتے ہو۔ پھر مامون ابا صلت کی طرف متوجہ ہوا اور کہا: اے ابا صلت! مجھے بتاؤ وہ کلمات جو تم نے پڑھے تھے جن سے بڑی مچھلی نے چھوٹی مچھلیوں کو نگل لیا۔ مجھے وہ سکھاؤ۔ میں نے کہا: اللہ کی قسم! اب میں وہ بھول گیا ہوں۔ میں نے سچ کہا تھا، لیکن مامون نے حکم دیا کہ مجھے جیل میں ڈال دیا جائے۔ - Instruction: They buried Imam Reza (a) and I stayed in jail for one year. I had a very hard time in jail. One night I could not go to sleep. I stayed up and prayed to Allah, the Blessed the Highest. I kept mentioning Holy Prophet (s) and his progeny (a). I kept asking Almighty Allah for a happy ending. Before finishing my prayers Imam Muhammad ibn Ali (a) entered and said, ‘O Aba Salt! Is your breast straitened?’ Then I said, ‘By Allah! Yes.’ Then Imam Muhammad ibn Ali (a) said, ‘Stand up and leave here along with me.’ Then Imam Muhammad ibn Ali (a) placed his hands to the chains on me and they all opened up. He (a) took my hands and brought me out of jail, while the prison guards were watching us but did not have the power to say a word. Then Imam Muhammad ibn Ali (a) told me, ‘Go. I entrust you to Almighty Allah! Know that you will never again encounter Mamoon. Neither will Mamoon ever find you.’” Aba Salt added, “Mamoon has not found me up until now.” - Instruction (Urdu): وہ امام رضاؑ کو دفن کر چکے تھے اور میں ایک سال تک جیل میں رہا۔ جیل میں میری حالت بہت سخت تھی۔ ایک رات مجھے نیند نہ آئی۔ میں جاگتا رہا اور اللہ تبارک و تعالیٰ کی عبادت میں لگا رہا۔ میں مسلسل رسولِ خداؐ اور ان کی آلؑ کا ذکر کرتا رہا، اور اللہ سے اچھے انجام کی دعا مانگتا رہا۔ ابھی میں اپنی دعا مکمل بھی نہ کر پایا تھا کہ امام محمد بن علیؑ اندر تشریف لے آئے اور فرمایا: اے ابا صلت! کیا تمہارا دل گھٹ رہا ہے؟ (کیا تم پریشان ہو؟) میں نے عرض کیا: اللہ کی قسم! ہاں۔ تو امام محمد بن علیؑ نے فرمایا: اٹھو اور میرے ساتھ یہاں سے نکل چلو۔ پھر امامؑ نے میرے ہتھکڑیوں / زنجیروں پر اپنا ہاتھ رکھا تو وہ سب کھل گئیں۔ امامؑ نے میرا ہاتھ پکڑا اور مجھے جیل سے باہر لے آئے۔ جیل کے پہرے دار ہمیں دیکھ رہے تھے مگر ان میں اتنی طاقت نہ تھی کہ ایک لفظ بھی بول سکیں۔ پھر امام محمد بن علیؑ نے فرمایا: جاؤ، میں تمہیں اللہ کے سپرد کرتا ہوں۔ جان لو کہ اب تمہارا مامون سے دوبارہ سامنا نہیں ہوگا، اور نہ ہی مامون تمہیں کبھی ڈھونڈ پائے گا۔ ابا صلت کہتے ہیں: مامون آج تک مجھے نہیں ڈھونڈ سکا۔ - Instruction: Another Narration About the Martyrdom of Imam Reza (a) Harsama ibn A’yan says, “One night I was in the presence of Ma’moon. He granted me permission to leave at four hours after the beginning of the night. I went home. At midnight, I heard someone knock at the door. My servant answered the door. The man at the door told him, ‘Tell Harsama that his master has summoned him.’ Then I got up immediately, quickly put on my clothes and rushed to the house of my master Imam Reza (a). The servant entered first and then I entered. I saw my master sitting in the yard. When Imam Reza (a) saw me he (a) said, ‘O Harsama!’ I said, ‘Yes, my master!’ - Instruction (Urdu): امام رضاؑ کی شہادت کے بارے میں ایک اور روایت ہرثمہ بن اعین کہتے ہیں: ایک رات میں مامون کے پاس موجود تھا۔ اس نے مجھے اجازت دی کہ رات کے شروع ہونے کے چار گھنٹے بعد میں واپس چلا جاؤں۔ میں گھر آ گیا۔ آدھی رات کے وقت میں نے دروازے پر دستک سنی۔ میرے خادم نے دروازہ کھولا۔ دروازے پر موجود شخص نے اس سے کہا: ‘ہرثمہ سے کہو کہ اس کے آقا نے اسے بلایا ہے۔ میں فوراً اٹھا، جلدی سے کپڑے پہنے اور اپنے آقا امام رضاؑ کے گھر کی طرف دوڑا۔ پہلے خادم اندر گیا، پھر میں اندر داخل ہوا۔ میں نے دیکھا کہ میرے آقا صحن میں بیٹھے ہوئے ہیں۔ جب امام رضاؑ نے مجھے دیکھا تو فرمایا: ‘اے ہرثمہ! میں نے عرض کیا: جی میرے آقا! - Instruction: Imam Reza (a) said, ‘Sit down.’ Then I sat down and Imam Reza (a) said, ‘O Harsama! Listen carefully to what I tell you. Now it is time for me to return to Allah, the Highest, and join my grandfather and my forefathers (a). My life has come to an end. This rebel (Ma’moon) has decided to poison me with chafed grapes and pomegranates. He has poisoned a thread, and has put it through the grapes using a needle and has poisoned the pomegranates by having one of his servants rub poison on his hands, and the servant has peeled the pomegranates and pulled out all the seeds, thereby covering them with poison. Then tomorrow Ma’moon will invite me (to his house), offer me these grapes and pomegranates, and he will ask me (i.e. force me) to eat them. Then I will eat them. The decree will come to happen and I will die. When I die, Ma’moon will say, ‘I must perform the ceremonial burial ablutions of his body with my own hands.’ Once Ma’moon says that, you should privately tell him that I told you to tell him not to perform the ceremonial burial ablutions for me, shroud me or bury me; else the Divine Punishment that is to brought upon him (Ma’moon) later will be brought upon him sooner. And that which he is trying to avoid will rush towards him. Then Ma’moon will accept this and give up.’ - Instruction (Urdu): امام رضاؑ نے فرمایا: بیٹھ جاؤ۔ میں بیٹھ گیا۔ پھر امام رضاؑ نے فرمایا: اے ہرثمہ! جو باتیں میں تم سے کہہ رہا ہوں انہیں اچھی طرح سن لو۔ اب میرا وقت آ گیا ہے کہ میں اللہ تعالیٰ کی طرف واپس جاؤں اور اپنے جد اور اپنے آباءؑ سے جا ملوں۔ میری زندگی کا اختتام قریب ہے۔ یہ باغی (مامون) نے فیصلہ کر لیا ہے کہ مجھے کُچلے / رگڑے ہوئے انگور اور انار کے ذریعے زہر دے گا۔ اس نے ایک دھاگے کو زہر آلود کیا ہے، پھر سوئی کے ذریعے اس دھاگے کو انگوروں میں گزارا ہے۔ اور اناروں کو بھی زہر آلود کیا ہے: اس نے اپنے ایک خادم کے ہاتھوں پر زہر لگوایا، پھر خادم نے انار چھیلے اور ان کے دانے نکالے، اس طرح وہ سب دانے زہر سے آلودہ ہو گئے۔ پھر کل مامون مجھے اپنے پاس بلائے گا، مجھے یہی انگور اور انار پیش کرے گا، اور مجھ سے (یعنی مجبور کر کے) کھانے کو کہے گا۔ پھر میں انہیں کھا لوں گا۔ جو تقدیر ہے وہ واقع ہو گی اور میں دنیا سے رخصت ہو جاؤں گا۔ جب میری وفات ہو جائے گی تو مامون کہے گا: ‘مجھے خود اپنے ہاتھوں سے ان کے جسم کو غسل دینا ہے۔ جب مامون یہ بات کہے تو تم خاموشی سے اسے بتا دینا کہ میں نے تم سے کہا ہے کہ: وہ میرے لیے غسلِ میّت نہ دے، نہ مجھے کفن پہنائے، اور نہ میری تدفین کرے ورنہ جو عذابِ الٰہی بعد میں اس پر آنا ہے وہ اس پر جلد آ جائے گا، اور جس چیز سے وہ بچنا چاہ رہا ہے وہ تیزی سے اس کی طرف بڑھ آئے گی۔ یہ سن کر مامون مان جائے گا اور ہاتھ روک لے گا۔ - Instruction: Then Harsama added, “I said, ‘Yes my master!’ Then Imam Reza (a) continued, ‘Then Ma’moon will appoint you to perform the ceremonial burial ablutions for me. Ma’moon himself will sit at a high point to watch you wash my body. O Harsama! Do not do anything related to my ceremonial burial ablutions until you see a white tent set up next to the house. Once you see it set up, take me inside wearing the clothes in which I had died. Stay outside and wait along with the others. Do not raise the tent to look in, lest you will be destroyed. Then Ma’moon will come to you and ask, ‘O Harsama! Don’t you say that no one but a Divine Leader can wash a Divine Leader’s body? Then who washed Abul Hasan Ali ibn Moosa (a) while his son Muhammad (a) was in Madinah that is one of the cities in Hijaz, and Imam Reza (a) is here in Toos?’ Once Ma’moon says this, you should answer him as follows, ‘No one needs to perform the ceremonial burial ablutions for a Divine Leader, except for the Divine Leader after him. - Instruction (Urdu): پھر ہرثمہ کہتے ہیں: میں نے عرض کیا: جی میرے آقا! پھر امام رضاؑ نے فرمایا: اس کے بعد مامون تمہیں مقرر کرے گا کہ تم میرا غسلِ میّت دو۔ مامون خود ایک اونچی جگہ بیٹھ کر تمہیں میرا غسل دیتے ہوئے دیکھے گا۔ اے ہرثمہ! غسل سے متعلق کوئی کام اس وقت تک نہ کرنا جب تک تم گھر کے پاس ایک سفید خیمہ لگا ہوا نہ دیکھ لو۔ جب تم اسے لگا ہوا دیکھ لو تو مجھے اُن ہی کپڑوں میں، جن میں میری وفات ہوئی ہو گی، خیمے کے اندر لے جانا۔ پھر تم باہر رہنا اور دوسروں کے ساتھ انتظار کرنا۔ خیمہ اٹھا کر اندر جھانکنا نہیں، ورنہ تم ہلاک ہو جاؤ گے۔ پھر مامون تمہارے پاس آئے گا اور کہے گا: اے ہرثمہ! کیا تم یہ نہیں کہتے کہ امام (الٰہی پیشوا) کو صرف وہی شخص غسل دے سکتا ہے جو خود الٰہی پیشوا ہو؟ تو پھر ابو الحسن علی بن موسیٰؑ کو کس نے غسل دیا، جبکہ ان کے بیٹے محمدؑ تو مدینہ (حجاز کے شہروں میں سے ایک شہر) میں ہیں، اور امام رضاؑ یہاں طوس میں ہیں؟ جب مامون یہ بات کہے تو تم اس کو یوں جواب دینا: امام کو غسل دینے والا، امام کے بعد والا امام ہی ہوتا ہے (یعنی: اصل میں امام کے غسل کا حق اسی جانشین امام کو ہے)۔ - Instruction: However, if someone violates this principle and performs the ceremonial burial ablutions for the Imam, this act will not void the Imam’s Divine Leadership. It will neither void the Divine Leadership of the Imam succeeding him, even if someone forces him not to perform the ceremonial burial ablutions for his father’s body. If Imam Reza (a) was in Madinah when he passed away, it is apparent that his son Muhammad (a) would have performed the ceremonial ritual ablutions for him (a). However, this did not happen, but Muhammad (a) performed the ceremonial burial ablutions for his father (a) in secret.’ Once the sides of the tent are lifted up you will see me in my shroud. Then lift up my body, place it in the coffin and carry me. Once he (Ma’moon) decides to have my grave dug, he will try to dig it in such a position that the grave of his father Haroon al-Rashid is located in the direction of the Qibla from my grave. This, however, will never happen. No matter how hard they hit the ground with a mattock, it will not be dug up, and they will not make any headway. - Instruction (Urdu): لیکن اگر کوئی اس اصول کے خلاف جائے اور امام کو غسلِ میّت دے دے، تو اس سے امام کی امامت / الٰہی قیادت باطل نہیں ہوتی۔ اور نہ ہی اس کے بعد آنے والے امام کی امامت باطل ہوتی ہے چاہے کسی نے اسے مجبور ہی کیوں نہ کیا ہو کہ وہ اپنے والد کے جسم کو غسل نہ دے سکے۔ اگر امام رضاؑ مدینہ میں وفات پاتے تو ظاہر ہے کہ ان کے فرزند محمدؑ ہی ان کو غسل دیتے۔ مگر ایسا (ظاہری طور پر) نہیں ہوا، بلکہ محمدؑ نے اپنے والدؑ کو پردے میں / خفیہ طور پر غسل دیا۔ جب خیمے کے پردے / کنارے اوپر اٹھیں گے تو تم مجھے کفن میں دیکھو گے۔ پھر میرے جسم کو اٹھانا، اسے تابوت میں رکھنا اور مجھے لے جانا۔ جب مامون میری قبر کھدوانے کا فیصلہ کرے گا تو وہ کوشش کرے گا کہ قبر اس جگہ بنے کہ اس کے باپ ہارون الرشید کی قبر میرے قبر کے قبلہ کی سمت آ جائے۔ لیکن یہ ہرگز نہیں ہو سکے گا۔ چاہے وہ کدال سے زمین پر جتنا بھی زور سے ماریں، وہ جگہ کھد نہیں سکے گی اور وہ کوئی پیش رفت نہیں کر پائیں گے۔ - Instruction: Once they have made enough effort and got tired, tell Ma’moon that I have ordered you to use a mattock and hit the ground at the location in the direction of the Qibla from the grave of his father Haroon al-Rashid just once. Then once you do this the ground will open up, a grave will be dug and a tomb shall be erected. Once Ma’moon accepts this and you see the grave appear, do not place me in it immediately. Wait until some clear water comes up and reaches the level of the ground. Then a fish as large as the grave will appear swimming there. Do not put me in it as long as the fish is moving. Then the fish will disappear and the water will be drained. Then take me to the grave and place me in it. Do not let anyone throw any dirt over my body. The grave will get filled and covered up by itself.’” - Instruction (Urdu): جب لوگ بہت کوشش کر کے تھک جائیں، تو مامون سے کہنا کہ میں نے تمہیں حکم دیا ہے کہ کدال لے کر میرے مامون کے باپ ہارون الرشید کی قبر کے قبلہ کی سمت والے مقام پر صرف ایک بار زمین پر ضرب لگاؤ۔ جب تم ایسا کرو گے تو زمین کھل جائے گی، قبر خود بن جائے گی اور لحد / قبر تیار ہو جائے گی۔ جب مامون یہ بات مان لے اور تم قبر کو ظاہر ہوتے دیکھ لو تو فوراً مجھے قبر میں نہ رکھنا۔ انتظار کرنا یہاں تک کہ صاف پانی اوپر آئے اور زمین کی سطح تک پہنچ جائے۔ پھر ایک مچھلی ظاہر ہوگی جو قبر کے برابر بڑی ہوگی اور اس میں تیر رہی ہوگی۔ جب تک وہ مچھلی حرکت میں ہو، مجھے قبر میں نہ رکھنا۔ پھر وہ مچھلی غائب ہو جائے گی اور پانی بھی اتر جائے گا۔ اس کے بعد مجھے قبر کے پاس لے جانا اور قبر میں رکھ دینا۔ اور کسی کو اجازت نہ دینا کہ وہ میرے جسم پر مٹی ڈالے۔ قبر خود بخود بھر جائے گی اور خود ہی ڈھک جائے گی۔ - Instruction: Harsama added, “I said, ‘Yes. My master!’ Then Imam Reza (a) told me, ‘Remember what I told you and act accordingly. Do not disobey.’ Then I (Harsama) said, ‘O my master! I take refuge in Allah that I will not disobey your orders.’” Harsama added, “Then I left there crying and sad. Tears were falling down like drops sizzling in a frying pan. No one but Allah, the Highest, knew how I felt. Then Ma’moon called me in and I went to him. I stood near him until daytime. Then Ma’moon said, ‘O Harsama! Go to Abul Hasan Imam Reza (a), express my greetings to him and tell him, ‘Come to us if it is not difficult for you. Else I will come to see you.’ If Imam Reza (a) accepts to come, insist that he (a) comes sooner.’” Harsama added, “When I went to Imam Reza (a), he (a) asked me, ‘O Harsama! Do you remember what I have advised you to do?’ I replied, ‘Yes.’ Then Imam Reza (a) said, ‘Give me my shoes. I know why Ma’moon has sent you here.’” - Instruction (Urdu): ہرثمہ کہتے ہیں: میں نے عرض کیا: ‘جی، میرے آقا! تو امام رضاؑ نے فرمایا: ‘جو کچھ میں نے تمہیں بتایا ہے اسے یاد رکھنا اور اسی کے مطابق عمل کرنا۔ نافرمانی نہ کرنا۔ میں نے عرض کیا: ‘اے میرے آقا! میں اللہ کی پناہ مانگتا ہوں کہ میں آپ کے حکم کی نافرمانی کروں۔ ہرثمہ کہتے ہیں: پھر میں وہاں سے روتا ہوا اور غمگین حالت میں نکل آیا۔ میرے آنسو اس طرح گر رہے تھے جیسے تپتے ہوئے تیل میں قطرے پڑتے ہوں۔ اللہ تعالیٰ کے سوا کوئی نہیں جانتا تھا کہ میرے دل پر کیا گزر رہی ہے۔ پھر مامون نے مجھے بلایا اور میں اس کے پاس چلا گیا۔ میں دن ہونے تک اس کے پاس کھڑا رہا۔ پھر مامون نے کہا: اے ہرثمہ! ابو الحسن امام رضاؑ کے پاس جاؤ، انہیں میرا سلام پہنچاؤ اور کہنا: اگر آپ کے لیے مشکل نہ ہو تو ہمارے پاس تشریف لے آئیں، ورنہ میں خود آپ کی خدمت میں آ جاؤں گا۔ اور اگر امام رضاؑ آنے پر راضی ہوں تو اصرار کرنا کہ وہ جلدی تشریف لے آئیں۔ ہرثمہ کہتے ہیں: جب میں امام رضاؑ کے پاس پہنچا تو امامؑ نے فرمایا: ‘اے ہرثمہ! کیا تمہیں یاد ہے جو میں نے تمہیں نصیحت کی تھی؟ میں نے عرض کیا: ‘جی ہاں۔ پھر امام رضاؑ نے فرمایا: مجھے میرے جوتے دے دو۔ میں جانتا ہوں مامون نے تمہیں کیوں بھیجا ہے۔ - Instruction: Harsama added, “Then I did this. Imam Reza (a) put them on and walked towards Ma’moon. Then when he (a) entered, Ma’moon stood up for him, embraced him and kissed him on the forehead. Ma’moon had Imam Reza (a) seated on his couch next to himself. He started talking to him for hours until daybreak. Then he ordered one of his servants to bring pomegranates and grapes.” Then Harsama added, “When I heard this I could not control myself. I started to shiver. I turned around and quietly left the meeting, since I did not want Ma’moon to see me in that state. I went to a corner of the palace. When the sun was about to go down, I sensed that my master had left. He had left there and returned home. Then I saw that Ma’moon ordered that doctors and nurses be called in.” Harsama added, “I asked, ‘What has happened?’ They told me, Ali ibn Moosa al-Reza (a) has become ill.’ The people were in doubt, but I was certain about what had happened since I knew.” - Instruction (Urdu): ہرثمہ کہتے ہیں: میں نے امامؑ کے جوتے لا دیے۔ امام رضاؑ نے جوتے پہن لیے اور مامون کی طرف چل پڑے۔ جب امامؑ مامون کے پاس داخل ہوئے تو مامون احترام سے کھڑا ہو گیا، امامؑ کو گلے لگایا اور پیشانی کو بوسہ دیا۔ پھر مامون نے امام رضاؑ کو اپنے پاس تخت / پلنگ پر بٹھا لیا۔ مامون کئی گھنٹے تک امامؑ سے باتیں کرتا رہا یہاں تک کہ صبح ہو گئی۔ پھر اس نے اپنے ایک خادم کو حکم دیا کہ انار اور انگور لے کر آؤ۔ ہرثمہ کہتے ہیں: یہ سنتے ہی میں اپنے آپ کو سنبھال نہ سکا۔ میں کانپنے لگا۔ میں نے پیچھے مُڑ کر چپکے سے مجلس چھوڑ دی، کیونکہ میں نہیں چاہتا تھا کہ مامون مجھے اس حالت میں دیکھے۔ میں محل کے ایک کونے میں چلا گیا۔ جب سورج غروب ہونے کے قریب تھا تو مجھے محسوس ہوا کہ میرے آقا (امام رضاؑ) وہاں سے نکل گئے ہیں اور اپنے گھر واپس آ گئے ہیں۔ پھر میں نے دیکھا کہ مامون نے حکم دیا کہ ڈاکٹر اور تیماردار بلائے جائیں۔ ہرثمہ کہتے ہیں: میں نے پوچھا: ‘کیا ہوا ہے؟ لوگوں نے کہا: علی بن موسیٰ الرضاؑ بیمار ہو گئے ہیں۔ لوگ شک میں تھے، مگر میں یقین سے جانتا تھا کہ کیا ہوا ہے، کیونکہ میں پہلے سے سب جانتا تھا۔ - Instruction: Harsama added, “When the second one-third part of the night came, loud crying could be heard from the house. I heard the crying and rushed in there from amongst the people who were rushing in. I looked and saw Ma’moon standing there on his feet with a bare head and open buttons. He was crying. Then I stood among the people and wept with deep sighs until the morning. Then Ma’moon held the mourning ceremonies. Then he stood up and walked to the place where our master Imam Reza (a) was placed and said, ‘Prepare a place for us. I want to perform his ceremonial burial ablutions in person.’ I stepped forward and told Ma’moon what my master Imam Reza (a) had told me regarding the ceremonial burial ablutions, shrouding and burying of his body. Then Ma’moon told me, ‘O Harsama! I will not object to your performing the ceremonial burial ablutions for him. Do as you please.’ I was standing and saw that a tent had been set up. I and everyone in the house subject to me were standing behind the tent. - Instruction (Urdu): ہرثمہ کہتے ہیں: جب رات کا دوسرا تہائی حصہ آیا تو گھر سے زور زور سے رونے کی آوازیں آنے لگیں۔ میں نے یہ آوازیں سنیں تو لوگوں کے ساتھ، جو اندر کی طرف دوڑ رہے تھے، میں بھی تیزی سے اندر پہنچ گیا۔ میں نے دیکھا کہ مامون کھڑا ہے، سر ننگا ہے اور کپڑوں کے بٹن کھلے ہیں۔ وہ رو رہا تھا۔ پھر میں لوگوں کے درمیان کھڑا رہا اور صبح تک آہیں بھر بھر کر روتا رہا۔ اس کے بعد مامون نے سوگ / ماتم کی مجلس منعقد کی۔ پھر وہ اٹھا اور اس جگہ آیا جہاں ہمارے آقا امام رضاؑ کا جسدِ مبارک رکھا تھا اور کہا: ہمارے لیے جگہ تیار کرو۔ میں خود اپنے ہاتھوں سے ان کا غسلِ میّت دینا چاہتا ہوں۔ میں آگے بڑھا اور مامون کو وہ بات بتا دی جو میرے آقا امام رضاؑ نے مجھے غسل، کفن اور دفن کے بارے میں بتائی تھی۔ یہ سن کر مامون نے مجھ سے کہا: اے ہرثمہ! میں تمہارے امام کو غسل دینے کے معاملے میں تمہاری مخالفت نہیں کروں گا۔ تم جیسے چاہو ویسا کرو۔ میں کھڑا تھا کہ میں نے دیکھا ایک خیمہ لگا دیا گیا ہے۔ میں اور گھر کے وہ سب لوگ جو میرے ماتحت تھے، خیمے کے پیچھے کھڑے تھے۔ - Instruction: We could hear the praises of Allah and His glorifications being recited along with the sound of water being poured and pans being moved. We could also smell such a good scent that we had never before smelled before. At once, I heard that Ma’moon called me to come up to the balcony of the house and said, ‘You thought that no one would perform the ceremonial burial ablutions for a Divine Leader, except a Divine Leader like himself. Then where is his son Muhammad ibn Ali (a) to come and perform the ceremonial burial ablutions for him? Now he (a) is in Madinah, while this one (Imam Reza (a)) is here in Toos.’ I (Harsama) replied, ‘O Commander of the Faithful (Ma’moon)! That is what we say. It is not incumbent upon anyone to perform the ceremonial burial ablutions for a Divine Leader, but another Divine Leader, one like him. However, if someone transgresses and performs the ablutions for the Divine Leader, that will not void the Divine Leadership of the Imam. - Instruction (Urdu): ہم خیمے کے اندر سے اللہ کی حمد و تسبیح کی آوازیں سن رہے تھے، ساتھ ہی پانی ڈالنے اور برتن ہلنے کی آوازیں بھی آ رہی تھیں۔ ہم نے ایسی خوشبو بھی محسوس کی جو ہم نے اس سے پہلے کبھی نہیں سونگھی تھی۔ اسی دوران میں نے سنا کہ مامون نے مجھے گھر کی بالکنی پر بلایا اور کہا: تم یہ سمجھتے تھے کہ امامِ برحق (الٰہی پیشوا) کو غسل صرف اسی جیسے کسی امام کے سوا کوئی نہیں دے سکتا۔ تو پھر اس کے بیٹے محمد بن علیؑ کہاں ہیں کہ آ کر اسے غسل دیں؟ وہ تو مدینہ میں ہیں، اور یہ (امام رضاؑ) یہاں طوس میں ہیں! میں (ہرثمہ) نے جواب دیا: اے امیرالمؤمنین (مامون)! ہم یہی کہتے ہیں کہ امام کو غسل دینے کا حق صرف اس کے بعد آنے والے امام کو ہوتا ہے، یعنی اسی جیسے ایک امام کو۔ لیکن اگر کوئی اس اصول کی خلاف ورزی کر کے امام کو غسل دے بھی دے، تو اس سے امام کی امامت باطل نہیں ہوتی۔ - Instruction: Neither will the transgression of the one who has performed the ablutions for the Divine Leader void the Divine Leadership of the Imam that is to succeed, since he has been oppressed and not allowed to perform the ceremonial burial ablutions for his father. If Abul Hasan Ali ibn Moosa al-Reza (a) was in Madinah, then it is apparent that his son Muhammad (a) would have washed him. However, now it is apparent that even though his son did not do this in public, he performed the ceremonial burial ablutions for his father in secret.’ Then Ma’moon became quiet and said nothing more. Then the sides of the tent were lifted. When I looked, I saw my master Imam Reza (a) shrouded. His body was placed in the coffin, Ma’moon prayed Namaz al-Mayyit with the people present over there. Then Imam Reza (a) was lifted up and taken up to the location of the grave. Then I saw a group of people who were trying to dig up the ground near Harun’s grave in such a way as to position Harun’s grave to be in the direction of the Qibla from Al-Reza’s (s) grave. - Instruction (Urdu): اور جس شخص نے امام کو غسل دیا ہے، اس کی یہ خلاف ورزی بھی اُس امام کی امامت کو باطل نہیں کرتی جو امام کے بعد آنے والا ہے، کیونکہ وہ مظلوم ہے اور اسے اپنے والد کے جسم کو غسل دینے کی اجازت نہیں دی گئی۔ اگر ابو الحسن علی بن موسیٰ الرضاؑ مدینہ میں وفات پاتے تو ظاہر ہے کہ ان کے فرزند محمدؑ ہی انہیں غسل دیتے۔ لیکن اب یہ بات ظاہر ہے کہ اگرچہ ان کے بیٹے نے یہ کام لوگوں کے سامنے نہیں کیا، مگر انہوں نے اپنے والدؑ کو خفیہ طور پر غسلِ میّت دے دیا ہے۔ یہ سن کر مامون خاموش ہو گیا اور اس نے مزید کچھ نہ کہا۔ پھر خیمے کے پردے / کنارے اٹھائے گئے۔ جب میں نے دیکھا تو میرے آقا امام رضاؑ کفن میں تھے۔ ان کا جسم تابوت میں رکھا گیا۔ مامون نے وہاں موجود لوگوں کے ساتھ مل کر امام رضاؑ پر نمازِ میّت پڑھی۔ اس کے بعد امام رضاؑ کو اٹھایا گیا اور قبر کی جگہ کی طرف لے جایا گیا۔ پھر میں نے دیکھا کہ کچھ لوگ ہارون کی قبر کے قریب زمین کھودنے کی کوشش کر رہے تھے تاکہ ہارون کی قبر، امام رضاؑ کی قبر کے مقابلے میں قبلہ کی سمت آ جائے (یعنی امام رضاؑ کی قبر کے قبلہ رخ طرف ہارون کی قبر پڑے)۔ - Instruction: However, no matter how hard they tried, not even the least bit of dirt was removed from the ground. Ma’moon said, ‘O Harsama! Do you see how the dirt refuses to be dug up for his grave?’ I told Ma’moon, ‘O Commander of the Faithful! Imam Reza (a) has indeed ordered me to hit not more than one stroke of the mattock on the ground in the direction of the Qibla from the grave of your father Haroon al-Rashid.’ Then Ma’moon asked me, ‘O Harsama! What will happen if you make just one strike on the ground?’ I said, “Indeed Imam Reza (a) has informed me that it is not allowed that the grave of for your father, Haroon, be positioned in the direction of the Qibla from his (al-Reza (a)’s) grave. And if I just strike the ground once, a prepared tomb will appear where there is no need to dig up the ground and remove any dirt. A large tomb shall appear in the middle.’ Then Ma’moon said, ‘Glory be to Allah! What does all this mean? How amazing is what Abul Hasan (a) has said! O Harsama! Strike the ground with the mattock so that we see what happens.’ Then I picked up the mattock with my hands and hit the ground with it once in the position of the direction of the Qibla from Haroon al-Rashid’s grave. Then a dug-up and prepared grave with a tomb appeared in the middle. The people were looking at it. - Instruction (Urdu): لیکن وہ جتنی بھی کوشش کرتے رہے، زمین سے ایک ذرّہ مٹی بھی نہ نکلی۔ مامون نے کہا: اے ہرثمہ! کیا تم دیکھ رہے ہو کہ اس کی قبر کے لیے زمین کھدنے سے انکار کر رہی ہے؟ میں نے مامون سے کہا: اے امیرالمؤمنین! امام رضاؑ نے مجھے حکم دیا ہے کہ میں آپ کے والد ہارون الرشید کی قبر کے مقابلے میں، بلہ کی سمت والے مقام پر زمین پر کدال کی صرف ایک ضرب لگاؤں، اس سے زیادہ نہیں۔ مامون نے پوچھا: اے ہرثمہ! اگر تم زمین پر صرف ایک ضرب لگاؤ گے تو کیا ہوگا؟ میں نے کہا: امام رضاؑ نے مجھے بتایا ہے کہ یہ جائز نہیں کہ آپ کے والد ہارون کی قبر، امام رضاؑ کی قبر کے مقابلے میں قبلہ کی سمت میں آ ائے۔ اور اگر میں صرف ایک بار زمین پر ضرب لگاؤں تو وہاں ایک تیار قبر ظاہر ہو جائے گی جس کے لیے نہ کھدائی کی ضرورت ہوگی اور نہ مٹی نکالنے کی۔ درمیان میں ایک بڑی تیار لحد / قبر ظاہر ہو جائے گی۔ یہ سن کر مامون نے کہا: سبحان اللہ! اس سب کا کیا مطلب ہے؟ ابو الحسنؑ نے جو کہا وہ کتنا حیرت انگیز ہے! اے ہرثمہ! کدال سے زمین پر ضرب لگاؤ تاکہ ہم دیکھیں کیا ہوتا ہے۔ پھر میں نے اپنے ہاتھ سے کدال اٹھائی اور ہارون الرشید کی قبر کے مقابلے میں، قبلہ کی سمت والے مقام پر ایک بار زمین پر ضرب لگائی۔ تو وہاں درمیان میں ایک کھودی ہوئی اور تیار قبر (اور لحد / قبر کا حصہ) ظاہر ہو گیا۔ لوگ اسے دیکھ رہے تھے۔ - Instruction: Ma’moon said, ‘O Harsama! Place Imam Reza (a) in it.’ Then I said, ‘O Commander of the Faithful (Ma’moon)! Indeed my master has ordered me not to place him in the grave until there gushes out of the earth clear water and the grave gets filled up with it up to the level of the earth. Also a fish as large as the grave shall appear and move in the water. Then I am instructed to take Imam Reza (a) next to the grave and just leave him there when the fish disappears and the water totally drains away.’ Then Ma’moon said, ‘O Harsama! Do whatever you have been ordered to do.’ Harsama added: Then I waited until the water and the fish appeared. Then the fish disappeared and the water was drained away while all the people were watching. Then I took the corpse next to the grave and left it there. At once, I saw that a white tent was set up next to the grave in such a way that we could no longer see the grave. Someone other than those who were present there picked up the body, and placed it in the grave. Ma’moon pointed at the people to throw dirt over the body and fill up the grave. - Instruction (Urdu): مامون نے کہا: اے ہرثمہ! امام رضاؑ کو اس قبر میں رکھ دو۔ میں نے عرض کیا: اے امیرالمؤمنین (مامون)! میرے آقا نے مجھے حکم دیا ہے کہ میں انہیں اُس وقت تک قبر میں نہ رکھوں جب تک زمین سے صاف پانی نہ نکلے اور قبر پانی سے بھر کر زمین کی سطح تک نہ پہنچ جائے۔ پھر ایک مچھلی ظاہر ہوگی جو قبر کے برابر بڑی ہوگی اور پانی میں حرکت کرے گی۔ پھر مجھے حکم ہے کہ جب مچھلی غائب ہو جائے اور پانی بالکل اتر جائے تو میں امام رضاؑ کے جسدِ مبارک کو قبر کے پاس لا کر بس وہاں رکھ دوں۔ مامون نے کہا: اے ہرثمہ! جیسے تمہیں حکم دیا گیا ہے ویسا ہی کرو۔ ہرثمہ کہتے ہیں: پھر میں نے انتظار کیا یہاں تک کہ پانی اور مچھلی ظاہر ہو گئی۔ پھر سب لوگ دیکھ رہے تھے کہ مچھلی غائب ہو گئی اور پانی بھی اتر گیا۔ پھر میں نے جسدِ مبارک کو قبر کے پاس لے جا کر رکھ دیا۔ اسی وقت میں نے دیکھا کہ قبر کے پاس ایک سفید خیمہ لگا دیا گیا، اس طرح کہ اب ہمیں قبر نظر نہیں آ رہی تھی۔ پھر وہاں موجود لوگوں کے علاوہ کسی اور نے جسدِ مبارک کو اٹھایا اور قبر میں رکھ دیا۔ مامون نے لوگوں کو اشارہ کیا کہ وہ جسد پر مٹی ڈالیں اور قبر کو بھر دیں۔ - Instruction: I said, ‘O Commander of the Faithful (Ma’moon)! We will not do that.’ Ma’moon said, ‘Woe be to you! Then who will fill up the grave?’ I said, ‘Indeed Imam Reza (a) has ordered me not to throw any dirt over his body. He (a) has informed me that the grave will be filled up by itself. Then it will be raised up and a four-sided tomb will be formed.’ Then Ma’moon ordered the people not to throw any dirt over him. The people dropped the dirt that they had picked up. The grave was filled up, raised and turned into a four-sided tomb. Then Ma’moon returned. He called me in and asked me in private, ‘O Harsama! I ask you to swear to Allah and tell me the truth about whatever you heard from Abul Hasan al-Reza (a), may Allah sanctify his spirit.’ Then I told the Commander of the Faithful (Ma’moon) whatever Imam Reza (a) had told me. Then he told me, ‘I swear to you by Allah to tell me if he informed you of anything else.’ Then I said, ‘O Commander of the Faithful! I will answer any questions that you ask.’ - Instruction (Urdu): میں نے کہا: اے امیرالمؤمنین (مامون)! ہم ایسا نہیں کریں گے (یعنی قبر پر مٹی نہیں ڈالیں گے)۔ مامون نے کہا: تم پر افسوس! پھر قبر کون بھرے گا؟ میں نے کہا: امام رضاؑ نے مجھے حکم دیا ہے کہ ان کے جسمِ مبارک پر کوئی مٹی نہ ڈالی جائے۔ امامؑ نے مجھے بتایا ہے کہ قبر خود بخود بھر جائے گی، پھر وہ اونچی ہو جائے گی اور ایک چار کونوں والا مزار / قبر بن جائے گا۔ یہ سن کر مامون نے لوگوں کو حکم دیا کہ وہ امامؑ پر مٹی نہ ڈالیں۔ لوگوں نے جو مٹی اٹھا رکھی تھی وہ چھوڑ دی۔ پھر قبر خود بھر گئی، اونچی ہو گئی اور چار کونوں والی قبر بن گئی۔ اس کے بعد مامون واپس چلا گیا۔ پھر اس نے مجھے بلایا اور تنہائی میں مجھ سے کہا: اے ہرثمہ! میں تمہیں اللہ کی قسم دیتا ہوں، سچ سچ بتاؤ جو کچھ تم نے ابوالحسن علی بن موسیٰ الرضاؑ سے سنا تھا (اللہ ان کی روح کو پاک رکھے)۔ تو میں نے مامون کو وہ سب باتیں بتا دیں جو امام رضاؑ نے مجھے فرمائی تھیں۔ پھر مامون نے کہا: میں تمہیں اللہ کی قسم دیتا ہوں، بتاؤ کیا انہوں نے تمہیں اس کے علاوہ بھی کچھ بتایا تھا؟ میں نے کہا: اے امیرالمؤمنین! آپ جو سوال کریں گے میں اس کا جواب دوں گا۔ - Instruction: Ma’moon asked, ‘O Harsama! Did Imam Reza (a) tell you anything else in private?’ I replied, ‘Yes, he (a) did.’ Ma’moon asked, ‘What was it?’ I replied, ‘Imam Reza (a) informed me about the grapes and the pomegranates.’ Then Ma’moon turned colors. He turned yellow, red, and black. Finally he yawned and fainted. While Ma’moon was unconscious I heard him say, ‘Woe be to Ma’moon from Allah! Woe be to him from Allah’s Prophet (s)! Woe be to him from Ali ibn Abi Talib (a). Woe be to Ma’moon from (the Blessed Lady) Fatema, al-Zahra (s)! Woe be to Ma’moon from Imam Hasan (a) and Imam Hussain (a)! Woe be to Ma’moon from Ali ibn Hussain (a)! Woe be to Ma’moon from Muhammad ibn Ali (a)! Woe be to Ma’moon from Ja’far ibn Muhammad (a)! Woe be to Ma’moon from Moosa ibn Ja’far (a)! Woe be to Ma’moon from Ali ibn Moosa al-Reza (a)! By Allah, this is the clear loss.’ - Instruction (Urdu): مامون نے پوچھا: اے ہرثمہ! کیا امام رضاؑ نے تمہیں تنہائی میں کوئی اور بات بھی بتائی تھی؟ میں نے کہا: جی ہاں، بتائی تھی۔ مامون نے پوچھا: وہ کیا تھی؟ میں نے کہا: امام رضاؑ نے مجھے انگوروں اور انار کے بارے میں خبر دی تھی (یعنی زہر دیے جانے کی بات)۔ یہ سن کر مامون کا رنگ بدل گیا کبھی زرد، کبھی سرخ، کبھی سیاہ ہو گیا۔ آخرکار وہ جمائی لینے لگا اور بے ہوش ہو گیا۔ جب مامون بے ہوش تھا تو میں نے اسے کہتے سنا: افسوس مامون پر اللہ کی طرف سے! افسوس مامون پر رسولِ خداؐ کی طرف سے! افسوس مامون پر علی ابن ابی طالبؑ کی طرف سے! افسوس مامون پر سیدہ فاطمہ زہراؑ کی طرف سے! افسوس مامون پر امام حسنؑ اور امام حسینؑ کی طرف سے! افسوس مامون پر علی ابن حسینؑ کی طرف سے! افسوس مامون پر محمد ابن علیؑ کی طرف سے! افسوس مامون پر جعفر ابن محمدؑ کی طرف سے! افسوس مامون پر موسیٰ ابن جعفرؑ کی طرف سے! افسوس مامون پر علی ابن موسیٰ الرضاؑ کی طرف سے! خدا کی قسم! یہی کھلا ہوا نقصان ہے۔ - Instruction: Ma’moon kept repeating these same words. When I saw that this change of state lasted for a long time, I got up and left. I sat in a corner of the palace. Ma’moon became conscious again and called me in. I went in and saw him sitting like a drunk person. He said, ‘By Allah! You are not least dearer to me than Imam Reza (a). Even the residents of the heavens and the earth are not dearer to me than him. I swear by Allah that if I hear that you have told anyone else what you have heard from him, I will kill you.’ I (Harsama) said, ‘O Commander of the Faithful! Shedding my blood will be allowed for you, if you realize that I have expressed anything about this to anyone.’ Ma’moon said, ‘By Allah, I will not accept this unless you swear and make a covenant to keep this a secret.’ Ma’moon made me make a promise and a covenant, and made me swear to them. When I left, he hit himself on the head with both hands and recited the following verse (4:108)… - Instruction (Urdu): مامون یہ جملے بار بار دہراتا رہا۔ جب میں نے دیکھا کہ اس کی یہ حالت کافی دیر تک رہی تو میں اٹھ کر باہر آ گیا اور محل کے ایک کونے میں بیٹھ گیا۔ پھر مامون کو ہوش آیا اور اس نے مجھے اندر بلایا۔ میں اندر گیا تو دیکھا کہ وہ اس طرح بیٹھا تھا جیسے کوئی نشے میں ہو۔ اس نے کہا: خدا کی قسم! تم مجھے امام رضاؑ سے کم عزیز نہیں ہو۔ بلکہ آسمان اور زمین کے رہنے والے بھی مجھے اس سے زیادہ عزیز نہیں۔ میں اللہ کی قسم کھاتا ہوں کہ اگر مجھے یہ خبر ملی کہ تم نے ان سے سنی ہوئی بات کسی اور کو بتا دی ہے تو میں تمہیں قتل کر دوں گا۔ میں (ہرثمہ) نے کہا: اے امیرالمؤمنین! اگر آپ کو یقین ہو جائے کہ میں نے یہ بات کسی کو بتائی ہے تو پھر میرا خون بہانا آپ کے لیے جائز ہو گا۔ مامون نے کہا: اللہ کی قسم! میں اس بات پر راضی نہیں ہوں گا جب تک تم قسم نہ کھاؤ اور عہد نہ کرو کہ اسے راز رکھو گے۔ چنانچہ مامون نے مجھ سے وعدہ اور عہد لیا اور مجھ سے قسم کھلوائی۔ جب میں باہر نکلا تو مامون نے دونوں ہاتھوں سے اپنے سر پر مارا اور سورۂ نساء (۴:۱۰۸) کی یہ آیت پڑھی: (مفہوم): یہ لوگ لوگوں سے تو چھپ جاتے ہیں، مگر اللہ سے نہیں چھپ سکتے حالانکہ اللہ اُن کے ساتھ ہوتا ہے جب وہ رات کو ایسی باتیں چھپ کر کرتے ہیں جو اللہ کو پسند نہیں۔ اور اللہ اُن کے سب کاموں کو گھیرے ہوئے ہے (خوب جاننے والا ہے)۔ - Arabic: يَسْتَخْفُوْنَ مِنَ النَّاسِ وَلَا يَسْتَخْفُوْنَ مِنَ اللهِ وَهُوَ مَعَهُمْ اِذْ يُبَيِّتُوْنَ مَا لَا يَرْضٰى مِنَ الْقَوْلِ وَكَانَ اللهُ بِمَا يَعْمَلُوْنَ مُحِيْطًا - Transliteration: YASTAKHFOONA MINANNAASI WA LAA YASTAKH FOONA MINAL LAAHI WA HUWA MA’AHUM IZ YUBAIYITOONA MAA LAA YARDAA MINAL QAWL; WA KAANAL LAAHU BIMAA YA’MALOONA MUHEETAA. - English: They hide themselves from men and do not hide themselves from Allah, and He is with them when they meditate by night words which please Him not, and Allah encompasses what they do. - Urdu: یہ لوگ انسانوں کی نظروں سے اپنے کو چھپاتے ہیں اور خدا سے نہیں چھپ سکتے ہیں جب کہ وہ اس وقت بھی ان کے ساتھ رہتا ہے جب وہ ناپسندیدہ باتوں کی سازش کرتے ہیں اور خدا ان کے تمام اعمال کا احاطہ کئے ہوئے ہے۔ - Instruction: Mohaddis Qummi (r) writes: The following were the final words which Imam Reza (a) uttered (3:154)… - Instruction (Urdu): محدثِ قمیؒ کے مطابق (روایت میں)، امام رضاؑ کے آخری الفاظ قرآنِ کریم کی یہ آیت تھے۔۔۔ - Arabic: ۔۔۔قُل لَّوْ كُنْتُمْ فِيْ بُيُوْتِكُمْ لَبَرَزَ الَّذِيْنَ كُتِبَ عَلَيْهِمُ الْقَتْلُ اِلٰى مَضَاجِعِهِمْ۔۔۔ - Transliteration: …QUL LAUW KUN-TUM FEE BO-YOOTE-KUM LA-BARA-ZAL LAZEE-NA KOTEBA A’LAIY-HE-MUL QATLO ELAA MAZAAJE-E’HIM… - English: …Say: Had you remained in your houses, those for whom slaughter was ordained would certainly have gone forth to the places where they would be slain… - Urdu: ۔۔۔کہہ دیجئے کہ اگر تم گھروں میں بھی رہ جاتے تو جن کے لئے شہادت لکھ دی گئی ہے وہ اپنے مقتل تک بہرحال جاتے۔۔۔ - Instruction: Shaikh Mufeed (r) narrates that Imam Reza (a) remained alive for two days after being poisoned. Ma’moon kept it a secret for one day and one night. Then he called Muhammad ibn Ja’far Sadiq and informed him about his death. He came with other persons from the family of Abu Talib (a). Ma’moon handed the corpse of Imam Reza (a) over to them and said: ‘You are witness that he (a) did not receive any harm from me.’ Then addressing the corpse of Imam Reza (a) he said: ‘O brother! It is very difficult for me to see you in this condition. I wanted to die before you so that you could become my successor but nothing can be done before the Will of Allah, the High.’ Then, after ceremonial ablution and shrouding the body of Imam Reza (a) was taken to the location where he is buried at present. His holy grave is situated toward Qibla near the grave of Haroon Rashid. His son Imam Jawad (a) was present to perform the burial ceremonies by himself but people did not know about it. According to some traditions, to avoid the mischief of the people, Ma’moon buried the corpse of Imam Reza (a) in the night. - Instruction (Urdu): شیخ مفیدؒ روایت کرتے ہیں کہ امام رضاؑ کو زہر دیے جانے کے بعد دو دن تک زندگی رہی۔ مامون نے یہ بات ایک دن اور ایک رات تک چھپائے رکھی۔ پھر اس نے محمد بن جعفر صادق کو بلایا اور انہیں امام رضاؑ کی وفات کی خبر دی۔ وہ ابو طالبؑ کے خاندان کے چند افراد کے ساتھ آئے۔ مامون نے امام رضاؑ کا جسدِ مبارک اُن کے حوالے کیا اور کہا: تم گواہ رہو کہ انہیں میری طرف سے کوئی نقصان نہیں پہنچا۔ پھر اس نے امام رضاؑ کے جسدِ مبارک کو مخاطب کر کے کہا: اے بھائی! تمہیں اس حالت میں دیکھنا میرے لیے بہت مشکل ہے۔ میں چاہتا تھا کہ میں تم سے پہلے مر جاؤں تاکہ تم میرے جانشین بنو، لیکن اللہ تعالیٰ کی مشیت سے پہلے کچھ نہیں ہو سکتا۔ اس کے بعد امام رضاؑ کو غسل دیا گیا، کفن پہنایا گیا اور جسدِ مبارک کو اس جگہ لے جایا گیا جہاں آج بھی آپؑ مدفون ہیں۔ آپؑ کی قبر قبلہ کی طرف اور ہارون رشید کی قبر کے قریب ہے۔ آپؑ کے فرزند امام جوادؑ تدفین کے اعمال خود انجام دینے کے لیے موجود تھے، مگر لوگوں کو اس کا علم نہ ہو سکا۔ اور بعض روایات کے مطابق، لوگوں کے فتنہ و فساد سے بچنے کے لیے مامون نے امام رضاؑ کے جسدِ مبارک کو رات کے وقت دفن کیا۔ - Arabic: مَنْ سَرَّهٗ اَنْ يَرٰى قَبْرًا بِرُؤْيَتِهٖ، يُفَرِّجُ اللهُ عَمَّنْ زَارَهٗ كَرْبَهٗ، فَلْيَاْتِ ذَا الْقَبْرِ اِنَّ اللهَ اَسْكَنَهٗ، سُلَالَةً مِنْ رَسُوْلِ اللهِ مُنْتَجَبَہٗ۔ - Transliteration: MAN SARRA-HU AN YARAA QABRAN BE-ROOYATE-HI, YO-FARRE JUL-LAAHO ‘AMMAN ZAARA-HU KARBA-HU, FAL-YAATE ZAL-QABRE INNAL LAAHA AS-KANA-HU, SOLAA-LATAN MIN RASOO-LIL LAAHE MUN-TAJABA-HU. - English: Whoever wishes to visit a tomb.
