- Instruction: Istikharah is the process of praying Almighty Allah for leading to the best option from among many options. When you are too confused to decide on a certain matter and you thus intend to ask Almighty Allah to lead you to the most suitable option, you may take 6 sheets of paper and write down the following on 3 of them…
- Instruction (Urdu): اس کی کيفيت يہ ہے کہ جب آپ کوئی کام کرنا چاہيں تو خدا سے استخاره کرنے کے لئے کاغذ کے ۶ ٹکڑے ليں ان میں سے ۳ ٹکڑوں پر لکھيں۔۔۔

- Arabic: بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِيْمِ خِيَرَةٌ مِنَ اللهِ الْعَزِيْزِ الْحَكِيْمِ لِفُلَانِ بْنِ فُلَانٍ اِفْعَلْ۔
- Transliteration: BISMILLAA-HIR RAHMAA-NIR RAHEE-ME KHEYA-RATOON MENAL LAAHIL ‘AZEE-ZIL HAKEE-ME LE-FOLAA-NIBNE FOLAA-NIN IF’AL.
- English: In the name of Allah, the Most Merciful, the Most Compassionate. (This is) a choice of what is best from Allah the Mighty, the Wise for so-and-so son of so-and-so: Do (it) / bring it about.
- Urdu: خدا کے نام سے جو بڑا رحم والا مہربان ہے طلب خير ہے الله سے جو غلبہ وحکمت والا ہے فلاں ابن فلاں کے لئے يہ کام کروں۔

- Instruction: On the other 3 sheets of paper, you may write down the following…
- Instruction (Urdu): اور دوسرے ۳ ٹکڑوں پر یہ لکھيں۔۔۔

- Arabic: بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِيْمِ خِيَرَةٌ مِنَ اللهِ الْعَزِيْزِ الْحَكِيْمِ لِفُلَانِ بْنِ فُلَانٍ اِفْعَلْ لَاتَفعَلْ۔
- Transliteration: BISMILLAA-HIR RAHMAA-NIR RAHEE-ME KHE-YARA-TOON MENAL LAAHIL ‘AZEE-ZIL HAKEE-ME LE-FOLAA-NIBNE FOLAA-NIN IF’AL LAA TAF’AL.
- English: In the name of Allah, the Most Merciful, the Most Compassionate. (This is) a choice of what is best from Allah the Mighty, the Wise for so-and-so son of so-and-so: Do (it); do not do (it).
- Urdu: خدا کے نام سے جو بڑا رحم والا مہربان ہے طلب خير ہے الله سے جو غلبہ وحکمت والا ہے فلاں ابن فلاں کے لئے يہ کام نہ کروں۔

- Instruction: You may then put all these sheets under your prayer-rug and offer a 2 unit prayer. Upon accomplishment, you may prostrate yourself and repeat the following words 100 times while prostrating…
- Instruction (Urdu): پھر کاغذ کے ان ۶ ٹکڑوں کو مصلے کے نيچے رکھ ديں اور ۲ رکعت نماز ادا کرے اور بعد از نماز سجدے میں جاکر ۱۰۰ مرتبہ یہ کہے۔۔۔

- Arabic: اَسْتَخِيْرُ اللهَ بِرَحْمَتِهٖ خِيَرَةً فِىْ عَافِيَةٍ۔
- Transliteration: ASTA-KHEE-RUL LAAHA BE-RAHMATE-HI KHEYA-RATAN FEE ‘AAFE-YAH.
- English: I seek Allah’s guidance in choosing by His mercy for what is best, with well-being.
- Urdu: خدا کی رحمت کے واسطے سے اس سے خير طلب کرتا ہوں اور آسانی بھی۔

- Instruction: You may then take the position of sitting and say the following…
- Instruction (Urdu): پھر سجدے سے سر اٹھا کر بيٹھ جائے اور کہے۔۔۔

- Arabic: اَللّٰهُمَّ خِرْلِىْ وَاخْتَرْلِىْ فِىْ جَمِيْعِ اُمُوْرِىْ فِىْ يُسْرٍ مِنْكَ وَعَافِيَةٍ۔
- Transliteration: ALLAAHUMMA KHIR-LEE WAKH-TARLEE FEE JAMEE’E OMOO-REE FEE YUSRIN MINKA WA ‘AAFE-YAH.
- English: O Allah, choose what is best for me and select for me in all my affairs granting me ease from You and well-being.
- Urdu: اے معبود! مجھے خير عطا کر ميرے تمام امور میں بہتری پيدا فرما جس میں سہولت اور آسانی ہو۔

- Instruction: You may then put your hand on the sheets of paper and scatter them randomly and then take them out one by one. If the 3 sheets carrying the word “DO IT” come out in sequence, then you may do what you have intended to do. If the 3 sheets carrying the word “DO IT NOT” come out in sequence, then you must not do what you have intended to do. If the first sheet you pick up contains the word “DO IT” while the second contains the word “DO IT NOT”, then you must put all the sheets together again and pick up five sheets. If 3 out of these 5 sheets contain the word “DO IT”, then you must do what you have intended to do, and vice versa.
- Instruction (Urdu): اس کے بعد کا غذ کے ان ٹکڑوں کو ہاتھ سے باہم ملا دے اور پھر ايک ايک کر کے باہر نکالے پس اگر يکے بعد ديگرے ۳ ايسے ٹکڑے نکليں جن پر’’افعل‘‘ (يہ کام انجام دے) لکھا ہو اور اگر متواتر ايسے ۳ ٹکڑے نکليں کہ جن پر ’’لاتفعل‘‘(اس کام کو انجام نہ ديں) لکھا ہو، اگر ايک ٹکڑے پر افعل اور دوسرے ٹکڑے پر لاتفعل لکھا ہو تو پھر يکباره ۵ ٹکڑے باہر نکالے اور ديکھے اگر ۳ پر افعل ہے اور ۲ پر لا تفعل تو ا س کا م کو انجام دے اور اگر بر عکس ہو تو انجام نہ دے۔
