# Prompting the Dead

## About this text

The talqin — the prompting spoken to the person who has died, kept with the details of burial.

It is addressed to them directly, not about them: remember the covenant on which you have departed the abode of this world. What follows is that covenant said back to them — that there is no god save Allah, One and having no associate; that Muhammad (s) is His servant and messenger; and that Ali (a), Hasan (a) and Husain (a) are the pious leaders to true guidance.

The second part is for those standing there: "We are Allah's and to Him we return", followed by the acknowledgement that this is what Allah and His Messenger promised, and a request for more faith and more submission.

## Text

- Arabic: بِسْمِ اللہِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِیْمِ
- Transliteration: BISMILLAAHIR RAHMAANIR RAHEEM
- English: In the Name of Allah, the most Gracious, the most Merciful.
- Urdu: اللہ کے نام سے (شروع کرتا ہوں) جو بڑا مہربا ن نہایت رحم کرنے والا ہے۔

- Arabic: اُذْكُرِ الْعَهْدَ الَّذِىْ خَرَجْتَ عَلَيْهِ مِنْ دَارِ الدُّنْيَا شَهَادَةَ اَنْ لَا اِلٰهَ اِلَّا اللهُ وَحْدَهٗ لَاشَرِيْكَ لَهٗ وَاَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا عَبْدُهٗ وَرَسُوْلُهٗ وَاَنَّ عَلِيًّا اَمِيْرَالْمُؤْمِنِيْنَ وَالْحَسَنَ وَالْحُسَيْنَ اَئِمَتُّكَ اَئِمَّةُ الْهُدَى الْاَبْرَارِ۔
- Transliteration: UZ-KORIL ‘AH-DAL LAZEE KHA-RAJTA ‘ALAIY-HE MIN DAA-RID DUNYAA SHAHAA-DATA AN LAA ILAAHA ILLAL LAAHO WAH-DAHU LAA SHAREE-KA LAHU WA ANNA MOHAMMADAN ‘AB-DOHU WA RASOO-LOHU WA ANNA ‘ALIYYAN AMEERAL MOMENEENA WAL HASANA WAL HUSAINA AIMMAT-TOKA AIMMA-TUL HO-DAL AB-RAAR.
- English: Remember the covenant on which you have departed the abode of this world: the profession that there is no god save Allah, One and Only and having no associate, that Muhammad (s.a.w.a) is His servant and messenger, and that Ali (a.s) the Commander of the Faithful, Hasan (a.s), Husain (a.s) they are the pious leaders to true guidance.
- Urdu: معبود مگر ﷲ جو یکتا ہے کوئی اس کا شریک نہیں اور یہ کہ حضرت محمدؐ اس کے بندے اور رسول ہیں۔ نیز یہ کہ علیؑ مومنوں کے امیر ہیں اور حسنؑ اور حسینؑ  تیرے امام ہیں جو ہدایت والے خوش کردار ہیں۔

- Arabic: اَللّٰهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلٰى مُحَمَّدٍ وَّآلِ مُحَمَّدٍ۔
- Transliteration: ALLAHUMMA SWALLE ALAA MUHAMMADIW WA AALE MUHAMMADIN
- English: Allah’s (s.w.t) choicest blessings be upon Mohammed and his holy progeny.
- Urdu: اے معبود! رحمت نازل فرما حضرت محمدؐ اور انکی آل ؑپر۔

- Arabic: بِسْمِ اللہِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِیْمِ
- Transliteration: BISMILLAAHIR RAHMAANIR RAHEEM
- English: In the Name of Allah, the most Gracious, the most Merciful.
- Urdu: اللہ کے نام سے (شروع کرتا ہوں) جو بڑا مہربا ن نہایت رحم کرنے والا ہے۔

- Arabic: اِنَّا لِلهِ وَاِنَّا اِلَيْهِ رَاجِعُوْنَ هٰذَا مَا وَعَدَنَا اللهُ وَرَسُوْلُهٗ وَصَدَقَ اللهُ وَرَسُوْلُهٗ۔ اَللّٰهُمَّ زِدْنَا اِيْمَانًا وَتَسْلِيْمًا۔
- Transliteration: INNAA LILLAA-HE WA INNAA ILAIY-HE RAAJE‘OONA HAAZAA MAA WA‘ADA-NAL LAAHO WA RASOO-LOHU WA SADA-QAL LAAHO WA RASOO-LOHU. ALLAAHUMMA ZIDNAA EEMAA-NAN WA TASLEEMA.
- English: We are Allah’s and to Him shall we return. This is what Allah and His Messenger promised us, and Allah and His Messenger spoke the truth. O Allah, (please) increase us faith and submission (to You).
- Urdu: یقیناً ہم ﷲ کے ہیں اور اسی کی طرف لوٹیں گے، یہی وہ چیز ہے جس کا وعدہ ہم سے ﷲ و رسولؐ نے کیا اور ﷲ اور اس کے رسولؐ نے سچ فرمایا، اے معبود! ہمارے ایمان و یقین میں  اضافہ فرما۔
