# Before Burial

## About this text

A short set of recitations for the time before burial, kept among the a'maal for a departed soul.

It is built from the plainest formulae the tradition has: the tasbihat — glory be to Allah, all praise be to Allah, there is no god save Allah, Allah is the Greatest — then salawat, then istighfar.

It closes with the words of Prophet Yunus (a) from inside the whale (21:87): "There is no god but You, glory be to You, surely I am of those who have wronged themselves" — the call the Qur'an names as the one answered when the distressed cry out.

## Text

- Arabic: سُبْحَانَ اللہِ وَالْحَمْدُ لِلہِ وَلَا اِلٰہَ اِلَّا اللہُ وَاللہُ اَكْبَرُ۔
- Transliteration: SUBHAANALLAHE WAL HAMDO LILLAAHE WA-LA ILAAHA ILLALLAAHO WALLAAHO AKBAR.
- English: All glory be to Allah; all praise be to Allah; there is no god save Allah; Allah is the Greatest.
- Urdu: پاک ہے اﷲاور حمد اﷲہی کے لئے ہے اور اﷲکے سوا کوئی معبودنہیں اور اﷲبزرگ تر ہے۔

- Arabic: اَللّٰهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلٰى مُحَمَّدٍ وَّآلِ مُحَمَّدٍ۔
- Transliteration: ALLAHUMMA SWALLE ALAA MUHAMMADIW WA AALE MUHAMMADIN
- English: Allah’s (s.w.t) choicest blessings be upon Mohammed and his holy progeny.
- Urdu: اے معبود! رحمت نازل فرما حضرت محمدؐ اور انکی آل ؑپر۔

- Arabic: اَسْتَغْفِرُ اللہَ رَبِّیْ وَ اَتُوْبُ اِلَیْہِ۔
- Transliteration: ASTAGHFERULLAH RABBI WA ATOOBO ILAIHE.
- English: I seek the forgiveness of Allah, my Lord, and I repent before Him.
- Urdu: معافی چاہتا ہوں اللہ سے جو میرا رب ہے اور اسکے حضور توبہ کرتا ہو۔

- Arabic: اَمَّنْ يُّجِيْبُ الْمُضْطَرَّ اِذَا دَعَاهٗ وَيَكْشِفُ السُّوْۗءَ۔
- Transliteration: AMMANY-YUJEEBUL MUD TARRA IZAA DA’AAHU WA YAKSHIFUS SOOO’A.
- English: Or, Who answers the distressed one when he calls upon Him and removes the evil.
- Urdu: بھلا وہ کون ہے؟ جو مجبور کی فریاد کو سنتا ہے جب وہ اس کو آواز دیتا ہے۔

- Arabic: لَّآ اِلٰهَ اِلَّآ اَنْتَ سُبْحٰنَكَ اِنِّيْ كُنْتُ مِنَ الظّٰلِمِيْنَ۔
- Transliteration: LAA ILAAHA ILLAA ANTA SUBHAANAKA INNI KUNTO MINAZ ZAALIMEEN.
- English: There is no god but Thou, glory be to Thee; surely I am of those who make themselves to suffer loss.
- Urdu: پروردگار! تیرے علاوہ کوئی خدا نہیں ہے تو پاک و بے نیاز ہے اور میں اپنے نفس پر ظلم کرنے والوں میں سے تھا۔
