## About this text

Imam Husain (a) alone on the field of Karbala, with no son, brother or nephew left. Wounded and thirsty, he asks for water and is mocked; he prays, asking only that the community be forgiven, and a voice from above accepts his sacrifice. He falls from his horse, Sakina (a) and Zainab (a) plead with Umar ibn Saad, and Shimr kills him before his sister's eyes.

Roman Urdu:
Aaj Shabbir pe kya aalam-e-tanhai hai
Zulm ki chaand pe Zahra ke ghata chhaayi hai
Us taraf lashkar-e-aada mein saf aarai hai
Yaan na beta na bhateeja na koi bhai hai
Barchhiyan khaate chale jaate hain talwaron mein
Maar lo pyaase ko hai shor sitamgaron mein

English:
What solitude has come upon Shabbir today!
The cloud of oppression has covered Zahra's moon;
On that side the enemy army is drawing up its ranks;
Here there is no son, no nephew, no brother.
Taking lance-thrusts, he presses on among the swords;
Among the oppressors the cry is, "Kill the thirsty one!"

**Stanza 2**

Roman Urdu:
Zakhmi bazu hain kamar kham hai badan mein nahin taab
Dagmagaate hain nikal jaati hai qadmon se rikab
Shiddat-e-zoaf mein jis ja pe thehar jaate hain
Saikron teer-e-sitam tan se guzar jaate hain

English:
His arms are wounded, his back is bent, there is no strength in his body;
He sways, and the stirrup slips from his feet;
Thirst overwhelms him; his lips are dry, his eyes brimming with tears;
With his sword he answers every blow of the enemy.
Wherever, in his utter weakness, he comes to a halt,
Hundreds of cruel arrows pass through his body.

English:
His blood-soaked locks cling to his cheeks;
His shoulders, slashed again and again by swords, hang down;
Arrows are lodged in him; blood flows from their notches;
One life is beset by a hundred thousand torments from the cruel.
His one care is to give his head in prostration to the One he worships;
The blows of the swords leave him no respite to draw breath.

**Stanza 4**

Roman Urdu:
Khoon se tar pech amaame ke hain sar zakhmi hai
Hai jabeen chaand si pur noor magar zakhmi hai
Seena sab barchhiyon se ta ba kamar zakhmi hai
Teer-e-bedad se dil zakhmi, jigar zakhmi hai
Zarb-e-shamsheer se bekar hain bazu donon
Zulm ke teeron se majrooh hain pehlu donon

English:
The folds of his turban are soaked with blood; his head is wounded;
His brow is radiant as the moon, but it is wounded;
His whole breast down to the waist is wounded by lances;
By the arrows of injustice his heart is wounded, his liver is wounded.
Both his arms are useless from the blows of swords;
Both his sides are wounded by the arrows of cruelty.

**Stanza 5**

Roman Urdu:
Barchhi aa kar koi pehlu mein laga jaata hai
Maarta hai koi neza to ghash aa jaata hai
Barhte hain zakhm-e-badan, zor ghata jaata hai
Band aankhen hain, sar-e-pak jhuka jaata hai
Gird-e-Zahra-o-Ali girya kunan phirte hain
Ghul hai ghore se Imam-e-do jahan girte hain

English:
One comes and drives a lance into his side;
Another strikes with a spear, and he falls into a faint;
The wounds on his body grow, his strength ebbs away;
His eyes are closed; his pure head droops.
Zahra and Ali circle round him, weeping;
There is a cry: "The Imam of both worlds is falling from his horse!"

**Stanza 6**

Roman Urdu:
Girte hain qatra-e-khoon zakhm-e-jabeen se paiham
Dast-e-majrooh se khinch sakte nahin teer-e-sitam
Fikr hai bakhshish-e-ummat ki kuchh apna nahin gham

English:
Drops of blood fall ceaselessly from the wound on his brow;
With his wounded hands he cannot draw out the cruel arrows;
His care is the forgiveness of the community; for himself he has no grief;
With his dry tongue he thanks God every moment.
His cloak is a sieve from the arrows; his robe is red as a rose;
His ruby lips are wounded; his mouth is full of blood.

**Stanza 7**

Roman Urdu:
Zeen se hota hai juda dosh-e-Muhammad ka makeen
Chaman-e-Fatima ka sarv hai mail ba zameen
Barchhiyan gird hain aur beech mein hain sarwar-e-deen
Hai ye nazdeek gire mohr-e-nubuwwat ka nageen
Paaon har baar rikabon se nikal jaate hain
Ya Ali kehti hai Zainab to sambhal jaate hain

English:
The one who rode on Muhammad's shoulder is parting from the saddle;
The cypress of Fatima's garden is bending to the ground;
Lances surround him, and in their midst is the Chief of the faith;
The gem of the seal of prophethood is about to fall.
Again and again his feet slip from the stirrups;
When Zainab cries "Ya Ali!" he steadies himself.

**Stanza 8**

Roman Urdu:
Laakh talwaren hain aur ek tan-e-athar hai
Ek mazloom hai aur zalimon ka lashkar hai
Saikron khanjar-e-faulad hain aur ik sar hai
Na koi yaar, na hamdam, na koi yawar hai
Baag ghore ki latakti hai, utha sakte nahin
Saamne ahl-e-haram rote hain, ja sakte nahin

English:
There are a hundred thousand swords and one most pure body;
One wronged man, and an army of oppressors;
Hundreds of steel daggers, and a single head;
No friend, no companion, no helper.
The horse's reins hang loose; he cannot lift them;
Before him the women of his household weep; he cannot go to them.

**Stanza 9**

Roman Urdu:
Koi Sayyid ka nahin aah, bachaane waala
Harbe laakhon hain, aur ik zakhm uthaane waala
Pyaas mein koi nahin, paani pilaane waala
Sambhle kis tarah bhala, barchhiyan khaane waala
Charkh se aag barasti hai zameen jalti hai
Maare garmi ke zaban khushk hai, lu chalti hai

English:
Alas, there is no one to save the Sayyid;
A hundred thousand weapons, and one man to bear the wounds;
In his thirst there is no one to give him water;
How can one who is taking lance-thrusts stay steady?
Fire rains from the sky; the earth is burning;
His tongue is dry from the heat; the scorching wind blows.

**Stanza 10**

Roman Urdu:
Kahin dam lene ko saaya nahin, hai waqt-e-zawal
Ainthi jaati hai zaban pyaas ki shiddat hai kamal
Kabhi Zainab ka hai gham gaah Sakina ka khayal
Din jo dhalta hai to Hazrat hue jaate hain nidhaal
Misl-e-khursheed, badan zoaf se tharrata hai
Nayyar-e-burj-e-imamat pe zawal aata hai

English:
There is no shade anywhere to rest in; it is the hour of the sun's decline;
His tongue is shrivelling; the thirst is extreme;
Now he grieves for Zainab, now he thinks of Sakina;
As the day declines, the Hazrat grows faint.
Like the sun, his body trembles with weakness;
Decline is coming upon the sun of the house of Imamate.

**Stanza 11**

Roman Urdu:
Kehte hain zalimon se, khushk zaban dikhla kar
Bahr-e-Haq paani ka, ik jaam pila do la kar
Ahl-e-keen kehte hain ye tegh-e-sitam chamka kar
Aab-e-shamsheer piyo barchhiyon ke phal kha kar
Ye sukhan sun ke bhi ghussa nahin farmaate hain
Yaas se soo-e-falak dekh ke reh jaate hain

English:
Showing his dry tongue, he says to the oppressors,
"For God's sake, bring me a single cup of water."
The hateful flash their cruel swords and say,
"Eat the fruit of the lances, then drink the water of the sword!"
Even hearing these words he shows no anger;
In despair he only looks up towards heaven.

**Stanza 12**

Roman Urdu:
Arz karte hain ye Khaliq se ke ae Rab-e-ghafoor!
Tu hai aalim ke nahin kuchh tere bande ka qusoor
Karte hain ye mujhe be jurm-o-khata teghon se choor
Haath ummat pe uthana nahin mujh ko manzoor
Jaante hain ke Muhammad ka nawaasa hoon main
Paani dete nahin do roz ka pyaasa hoon main

English:
He prays to the Creator: "O forgiving Lord!
You know that Your servant is in no way at fault;
Though I have done no crime or wrong, they cut me to pieces with swords;
I will not raise my hand against the community.
They know that I am Muhammad's grandson;
They give me no water; I have been thirsty for two days."

**Stanza 13**

Roza rakha to chhupa mehr numayan hui shab
Bhook mein khuld ka khana mujhe imdad kiya
Bhej kar harni ka bachcha mera dil shaad kiya

English:
"From childhood You have cherished me, O Lord;
You granted whatever I asked of You;
On Eid Your Beloved became my mount;
When I kept a fast, the sun hid and night appeared;
When I was hungry You helped me with food from Paradise;
You gladdened my heart by sending a fawn."

**Stanza 14**

Roman Urdu:
Ab agar hai ye teri maslahat ae Rab-e-qadeer
Ho rawan halq pe is pyaase ke aab-e-shamsheer
Mere Maula ba sar-o-chashm hai hazir Shabbir
Hukm-e-hakim mein ye taqat hai karoon main takheer
Jald gardan pe rawan, khanjar-e-burran howe
Ae khusha wo, jo teri raah mein qurbaan howe

English:
"Now if this is Your purpose, O Almighty Lord,
That the water of the sword should run over this thirsty one's throat,
My Master, Shabbir is here and ready with all his heart;
Have I the strength to delay when the Ruler commands?
Let the keen dagger pass quickly over my neck;
Happy is he who is sacrificed in Your way!"

**Stanza 15**

Roman Urdu:
Gham nahin kuchh mujhe go bekas-o-be yaar hoon main
Zer-e-shamsheer gala rakhne ko tayyar hoon main
Tu madadgar hai, mukhtar hai lachar hoon main
Waqt-e-mushkil hai, inayat ka talabgar hoon main
Tere sajde mein ye sar tan se juda ho jaawe
Ahd-e-tifli ka jo wada hai, wafa ho jaawe

English:
"I have no grief, though I am helpless and friendless;
I am ready to lay my throat beneath the sword;
You are the Helper, You hold all power; I am powerless;
It is a hard hour; I seek Your grace.
Let this head be parted from my body in prostration to You;
Let the promise made in childhood be kept."

Lab pe takbeer ho, jab halq pe khanjar ho rawan
Dil mein ho yaad teri, band ho jis waqt zaban
Dam bharoon tera hi tan se jo nikalne lage jaan
Baad-e-chehlum jo mujhe qabr muyassar howe
Zakhmi tan par na fishar ae mere dawar howe

English:
"By Your grace make the hardships of death easy;
Let the takbir be on my lips when the dagger runs over my throat;
Let Your remembrance be in my heart when my tongue falls silent;
Let me breathe Your name alone as my soul begins to leave my body.
When after the fortieth day a grave is granted me,
Let the grave not press upon this wounded body, O my Judge."

**Stanza 17**

Urdu:

Koi tohfa tere laiq nahin paata hai Husain
Haath khaali tere darbar mein aata hai Husain

English:
"Have mercy, have mercy; I am ashamed, O Lord God;

Husain finds no gift worthy of You;
Husain comes to Your court empty-handed."

"Those who keep your mourning will be safe from every sorrow;
For them there is no hardship in death, no torment of the grave's pressing;
At the moment of death they will see the face of Ali;
From the grave they will see the spring of the garden of Paradise.
Whatever pain they suffer is only while they are in this world;
Once their eyes close, the door of Paradise stands open."

English:
"There has never been a worshipper like you, nor will there ever be;
Has anyone ever given thanks like this while struck by arrow after arrow?
A single prostration of yours is worth more than the worship of all creation;
On the mighty Throne the angels sing your praise.
For love of Me you gave up your whole household;
All that was due in service, you have fulfilled."

Roman Urdu:
Bheer mein mujh ko nazar aate nahin baba jaan
Itna keh de ke sarak jaayen ye sab be iman
Gird phir phir ke, main hoon apne pidar ke qurbaan
Ja ke dekhoon gi, badan par hain lage zakhm kahan
Dam-e-aakhir to bhala kaam mein aaoon un ke

English:
"In the crowd I cannot see my dear father;
Just tell all these faithless men to move aside;
Circling round him again and again, I would give myself for my father;
I will go and see where the wounds are on his body.
At least at his last breath let me be of some use to him;
Let me wipe the blood from his face with my shirt."

**Stanza 47**

Roman Urdu:
Kitna kehti rahi wo bint-e-shah-e-arsh-e-janab
Us sitamgar ne diya kuchh na Sakina ko jawab
Peet kar sar kaha Zainab ne ke o khana kharab
Tujh ko aata nahin kuchh rooh-e-payambar se hijab
Zulm mat kar Asadullah ki jaai hoon main
Nange sar parde se baahar nikal aayi hoon main

English:
However much the daughter of the King of heavenly rank pleaded,
That tyrant gave Sakina no answer at all;
Beating her head, Zainab said, "O wretch,
Have you no shame before the soul of the Prophet?
Do not be cruel: I am the daughter of the Lion of God;
Bareheaded, I have come out from behind the veil."

**Stanza 48**

Roman Urdu:
Meri amman ka hai mashhoor jahan mein parda
Baad-e-rehlat bhi janaza na kisi ne dekha
Us ki beti hoon, tere zulm se, ye waqt para
Sar barahna hoon, gireban bhi hai kurte ka phata
Munh ko Allah-o-payambar se chhupata hai tu
Main to faryadi hoon, aur aankh churata hai tu

English:
"My mother's modesty is famous throughout the world;
Even after her death no one saw her bier;
I am her daughter, and through your cruelty this hour has come upon me:
I am bareheaded, and the collar of my shirt is torn.
You hide your face from Allah and the Prophet;
I come crying for justice, and you will not meet my eyes."

**Stanza 49**

Roman Urdu:
Maara jaata hai tere saamne Zahra ka pisar
Dekhta hai tu ye talwaren hain parti kis par
Dil-e-Zahra, jigar-e-Sher-e-Khuda, katta hai
Zulm se tere, Muhammad ka gala katta hai

English:
"Zahra's son is being killed before your eyes;
Do you see on whom these swords are falling?
Whom have the arrows struck? Whose heart has become a sieve?
Whom are you drawing the dagger to slaughter, tyrant?
Zahra's heart, the heart of the Lion of God, is being cut;
Through your cruelty, Muhammad's throat is being cut."

**Stanza 50**

Roman Urdu:
Qatl mazloom ko kyun karta hai, be jurm-o-gunah
Ab talak main ne bahut sabr kiya hai wallah
Dil jali hoon main abhi seene se khenchoon gar aah
Tu bhi jal jaaye, teri fauj bhi ho khaak-e-siyah
Bad dua doon main to nazil abhi aafat howe
Sar ke baalon ko jo kholoon to qiyamat howe

English:
"Why do you kill a wronged man who has done no crime or sin?
Until now, by Allah, I have been very patient;
My heart is burning; if I were to draw a sigh from my breast now,
You would burn, and your army too would turn to black dust;
If I were to curse you, calamity would come down at once;
If I were to loosen the hair of my head, the Day of Judgement would come."

**Stanza 51**

Roman Urdu:
Ghash mein Hazrat ne sune jab ke ye Zainab ke sukhan
Khol kar deeda-e-pur khoon ko uthaai gardan
Dekha sar nange khari roti hain maqtal mein behan

English:
When, in his faint, the Hazrat heard these words of Zainab,
He opened his blood-filled eyes and raised his neck;
He saw his sister standing bareheaded on the killing field, weeping;
The emperor of the age called out to Zahra's daughter,
"What have you done, that you have come out from the veil with heads uncovered?
While I still live, heads have come out from behind the veil!"

**Stanza 52**

Baaz aaye ga nahin, qatl se mere jallad
Jitna tum peetti ho, aur laeen hote hain shaad
Hashr ke roz Khuda dewe ga is khoon ki daad
Shauq marne ka hai, sar tan se juda hone do
Jaao ghar mein, mujhe ummat pe fida hone do

English:
"Whom are you pleading with? No one will hear your cry;
The executioner will not hold back from killing me;
The more you beat your breast, the happier the accursed become;
On the Day of Judgement God will give justice for this blood.
I long to die; let my head be parted from my body;
Go back to the tents; let me be sacrificed for the community."

**Stanza 53**

Phir ye beti ko pukaare tere sadqe Shabbir
Tu bhi ja saath phuphi jaan ke ab ae dilgeer
Waqt-e-taat hai zara yaad-e-Khuda kar lewen
Hum bhi ab aate hain, sajde ko ada kar lewen

English:
"Sister, take my Sakina up in your arms,
Lest someone shoot her with an arrow, as they did Asghar."
Then he called to his daughter, "Shabbir is your ransom;
You too go now with your aunt, my sorrowful child;
It is the hour of worship; let me remember God a while;
I too am coming soon, once I have made my prostration."

**Stanza 54**

Roman Urdu:
Keh ke ye ghash hue phir ran mein shahanshah-e-umam
Shimr-e-azlam ne rakha, seena-e-aqdas pe qadam
Jigar-e-Fatima Zahra pe chali tegh-e-do dam
Aage Zainab ke hue zibah Husain aah sitam
Peet kar bint-e-shahanshah-e-zaman rone lagi
Baap ko beti, biradar ko behan rone lagi

English:
Saying this, the emperor of the nations fainted again on the field;
The arch-tyrant Shimr set his foot on that most holy breast;
The two-edged blade passed over the heart of Fatima Zahra;
Before Zainab's eyes Husain was slaughtered: alas, the cruelty!
Beating her breast, the daughter of the emperor of the age began to weep;
The daughter wept for her father, the sister for her brother.

**Stanza 55**

Gham se khoon ho gaya seene mein kaleja saara
Kis se is dard-o-musibat ka bayan hota hai
Aankhen roti hain qalam rota hai dil rota hai

English:
In the enemy army the drum of victory was beaten;
A cry went up: "The darling of the Lion of God is slain!"
Enough, Anees: I have no strength left to speak;
With grief my whole heart has turned to blood within my breast;
Who can tell of this pain and calamity?
The eyes weep, the pen weeps, the heart weeps.
