## About this text

A marsiya on the martyrdom of Ali Asghar (a) and of Imam Husain (a), by Mir Khaliq, the father of Mir Anees. When the arrow pierces the infant's throat in his arms, the Imam lays him beside Ali Akbar (a) and turns to God, accepting His will. He asks the army to let him leave with his family, for a little water, or to fight them one at a time; all three are refused. He fights alone until he falls, and after his death the tents are burned and the women carried off on camels.

Roman Urdu:
Jab Asghar-e-masoom ki gardan pe laga teer
Aur shah ke bazu mein bhi paiwast hua teer
Haathon pe tarapne laga bachcha bhi jo kha teer
Shah ne kaha is pyaase ko tha maarna kya teer
Itna hi kaha hota ke hum paani na den ge

English:
When the arrow struck the neck of innocent Asghar
and the arrow went into the King's arm as well,
and the child, struck by the arrow, began to writhe in his hands,
the King (a) said, 'Was there any need to shoot an arrow at this thirsty child?
When did I say that I would take it by force?
You need only have said, "We will not give water."

Roman Urdu:
Ye jaante to kheme se laate na use hum
Tum ne hamen mahjoob kiya Bano se is dam
Ye kehte the malaoonon se ba deeda-e-pur nam
Jo haathon pe masoom tarap kar hua be dam
Farmaya use pehlu-e-Akbar mein lita kar
Tum dariyo na ab hum bhi yaheen sote hain aa kar

English:
Had I known this, I would not have brought him from the tent;
you have shamed me before Bano at this hour.'
He was saying this to the accursed with tearful eyes
when the innocent one writhed in his hands and breathed his last.
Laying him down beside Akbar, he said,
'Do not be afraid; I too am coming to sleep here now.

Roman Urdu:
Bin maan tum akele kabhi soye nahin Asghar
Jangal mein akela tumhen chhoroon ga main kyun kar
Phir qible ki janib ye kaha haath utha kar
Sab fani hain tu baqi hai ae Khaliq-e-Akbar

English:
Asghar, you have never slept alone without your mother;
how could I leave you alone in the wilderness?'
Then he raised his hands towards the qibla and said:
'All things perish, You alone remain, O greatest Creator;
what cruelties the cruel have done to me!
Yet my foot has not slipped from the path of acceptance.

**Stanza 4**

Roman Urdu:
Kaam aaye teri raah mein ansar bhi saare
Aur bete jo Zainab ke the beton se bhi pyare
Wo donon meri aankhon ke aage gaye maare
Gar koi mera yaar-o-madadgar nahin hai
Juz teri madad kuchh mujhe darkar nahin hai

English:
All my companions too have fallen in Your way,
and Zainab's sons, dearer to me than my own sons:
both of them were killed before my eyes;
Muslim's sons too laid down their heads for mine.
If I have no friend or helper left,
I need nothing but Your help.

**Stanza 5**

Roman Urdu:
Jab mere azizon pe chali zulm ki talwar
Banda yahi kehta raha jo marzi-e-Ghaffar
Qasim se bhi jab pyare bhateeje ko liya maar
Aur nahr pe maare gaye Abbas-e-alamdar
Bhai ke liye pehle to rota tha qalaq mein
Phir samjha ke behtar yahi hoga mere haq mein

English:
When the sword of oppression fell upon my kin,
Your servant kept saying only, 'As the Forgiving wills';
when they killed even so dear a nephew as Qasim,
and Abbas the standard-bearer was killed at the river,
at first I wept for my brother in anguish,
then I understood that this would be best for me.

**Stanza 6**

Roman Urdu:
Neza Ali Akbar ki jo chhaati mein laga tha
Rota hua main laash pe us ki to gaya tha
Hamshakl Muhammad ka wo farzand mera tha
Teri hi inayat thi mera sach hai ke kya tha
Thi mujh ko jo manzoor khushi Ibn-e-Ali ki
Atharah baras aur ziyarat ki Nabi ki

English:
When the spear struck Ali Akbar's chest,
I went weeping to his body;
that son of mine was the likeness of Muhammad (s);
it was all Your favour; truly, what had I of my own?
As the happiness of the son of Ali (a) was granted me,
I looked upon the Prophet (s) for eighteen years more.

**Stanza 7**

Roman Urdu:
Asghar bhi mera ho gaya teeron ka nishana
Jannat ki taraf kar diya us ko bhi rawana
Sad shukr kisi ka nahin ab daagh uthana
Apna hi gala baqi hai ab mujh ko katana
Qatil jo rawan khanjar-e-burran kare ga
Wo bhi meri mushkil tu hi aasan kare ga

English:
My Asghar too became the target of arrows;
I have sent him too on his way to paradise.
A hundred thanks: I have no one else's loss left to bear;
only my own throat remains to be cut.
When the killer drives the sharp dagger,
You alone will make that ordeal of mine easy too.

**Stanza 8**

Roman Urdu:
Kya karta agar sahib-e-aulad na hota
Hain la walad aksar tere bande mere Maula
Mujh par to inayat hi tera fazl-o-karam tha
Bete bhi diye rutba imamat ka bhi bakhsha
Sabir bhi hue aur unhen jaanbaz bhi dekha
Rifat se shahadat ki sarafraz bhi dekha

English:
What would I have done had I not been given children?
Many of Your servants are childless, my Lord;
upon me Your grace and generosity were pure favour:
You gave me sons, and granted me the rank of Imamate too;
they were patient, and I saw them give their lives,
and I saw them raised high by the glory of martyrdom.

**Stanza 9**

Roman Urdu:
Har mu ki jagah tan pe agar mere zaban ho
Kab banda nawazi ka teri mujh se bayan ho
Rahat hai agar halq pe khanjar bhi rawan ho
Irfan ke maze ko hai mera dil hi samajhta
Lazzat ko tarapne ki hai bismil hi samajhta

English:
If in place of every hair on my body there were a tongue,
how could I tell of Your kindness to Your servant?
It is comfort even if the dagger runs across my throat;
the relish of the arrows can never be made plain to anyone.
Only my heart knows the relish of knowing You;
only the slaughtered know the pleasure of writhing.

**Stanza 10**

Roman Urdu:
Ki bhook mein aur pyaas mein khatir meri kya kya
Faaqe mein tabaq khuld se nemat ka hai bheja
Chhutpan mein jo roza rakha mah-e-Ramzan ka
Tujh ko ye gawara hua pyaasa mera rehna
Rahm aaya tujhe dekh saghiri mere sin ki
Khursheed chhupa raat waheen ho gayi din ki

English:
How You cared for me in hunger and in thirst!
When I went without food, You sent a tray of blessings from paradise;
when in childhood I kept the fast of the month of Ramadan,
could You bear for me to stay thirsty?
Seeing how young I was, You took pity:
the sun hid, and the day turned to night then and there.

**Stanza 11**

Kya jaante kya maslahat is mein hai samajhta
Banda hoon tere amr mein hai dakhl mujhe kya
Tashweesh bhi be ja hai taraddud bhi hai be ja
Khushnoodi mujhe teri hi matloob hai ya Rab
Jo kuchh teri marzi hai wahi khoob hai ya Rab

English:
And today, when I have been hungry and thirsty for days,
who can know what wise purpose You see in it?
I am Your servant: what right have I to meddle in Your command?
Anxiety is out of place, and worry too.
Your pleasure alone is what I seek, O Lord;
whatever You will is good, O Lord.'

**Stanza 12**

Roman Urdu:
Aada se phir is tarah se kehne lage sarwar
Kya mujh ko samajhte nahin tum sibt-e-payambar
Main jhoot hoon kehta? nahin Zahra meri madar?
Malauno! nahin main pisar-e-Haidar-e-safdar

English:
Then the master spoke to the enemy like this:
'Do you not take me for the grandson of the Prophet (a)?
Am I lying? Is Zahra (a) not my mother?
You accursed! Am I not the son of Haidar (a), the breaker of ranks?
Do you deny my noble descent?
Is Shabbir (a) nothing to the Arabian Messenger?'

**Stanza 13**

Roman Urdu:
Malaoon sabhi ek zaban ho ke pukare
Tum sach hai nawase ho payambar ke hamare
Aur Fatima Zahra ke ho tum bete pyare
Baba hain Ali aur Hasan bhai tumhare
Bach jaao ge baiat mein jo hujjat na karo ge
Aur is mein taammul hai jo jeete na bacho ge

English:
The accursed all cried out with one voice:
'It is true, you are the grandson of our Prophet (a),
and you are the beloved son of Fatima Zahra;
Ali (a) is your father and Hasan (a) your brother.
You will be spared if you raise no objection to the pledge of allegiance;
but if you hesitate over it, you will not escape alive.'

**Stanza 14**

Roman Urdu:
Ye sun ke sar us shah ne pehle to jhukaya
Phir to Umar-o-Shimr-e-sitamgar ko sunaya
Main teen sawal is ghari tum paas hoon laaya
Namoos-e-payambar kahin le jaane do mujh ko
Ab yaan se kisi simt nikal jaane do mujh ko

English:
Hearing this, the King first bowed his head,
then said to Umar ibn Saad and the cruel Shimr:
'At this hour I have brought you three requests;
I, the son of Zahra (a), make this the first of them:
let me take the women of the Prophet (a) away somewhere;
let me leave this place now, in any direction.

**Stanza 15**

Roman Urdu:
Maare hain jo tum ne mere khesh-o-pisar-o-yaar
Us khoon ka iwaz tum se nahin lene ka zinhar
Is waaste is amr ko karta hoon main izhar
Ta khoon mein apne na hoon main aap giraftar
Akbar na ho Qasim na ho Abbas na hoye
Wo khaak jiye jis ke koi paas na hoye

English:
For the kinsmen, sons and friends of mine you have killed
I will never take vengeance on you for that blood;
I say this openly
so that I may not myself be held guilty of my own blood.
When there is no Akbar (a), no Qasim (a), no Abbas (a),
how can one live who has no one left beside him?

**Stanza 16**

Gar ye na ho to paani pila do mujhe thora
Wo kehne lage ye bhi nahin hoye ga hum se
Haan paani pila den ge dam-e-tegh-e-do dam se

English:
When the King had spoken, every one of them said,
'Let you go anywhere? That we shall not do.'
Then, wronged and helpless, the noble King said,
'If not that, then give me a little water to drink.'
They said, 'That too we shall not do;
yes, we will give you water from the edge of a two-edged sword.'

**Stanza 17**

Roman Urdu:
Shah ne kaha honton pe zaban sookhi phira kar
Hazir hoon karo zibah wale paani pila kar

English:
Passing his dry tongue over his lips, the King said,
'Here I am: slaughter me, but give me water first.'
Then the accursed men said to the cruel Shimr,
'Let us bring a cup from the river and give it to him.'
He said, 'If he gets the help of water from this side,
will you then be able to fight the son of the Cupbearer of Kausar?'

**Stanza 18**

Roman Urdu:
Shah ne kaha gar paani pilana bhi hai dushwar
To is ghari hamla na karo mujh pe sab ik baar
Ek ek laro mujh se tum ae qaum-e-sitamgar
Wo bole ke tum ho khalaf-e-Haidar-e-Karrar
Kasrat pe hai dam us pe kisi ke nahin dam mein
Ek ek laren tum se ye taqat nahin hum mein

English:
The King said, 'If even giving water is too hard for you,
then do not all attack me at once at this hour;
fight me one by one, you cruel people.'
They said, 'You are the son of Haidar-e-Karrar (a);
our courage rests on our numbers; beyond that no one has the breath for it;
we have not the strength to fight you one by one.

English:
You are the son of the man who slew Antar;
your father tore out the gate of Khaibar;
no army ever won a victory over him;
how could anyone fight the son of such a man?
You have the same daring, the same majesty and glory;
the same two-edged sword is in your grip.'

Phir soo-e-falak haath utha kar lage kehne
Main keh chuka aada se tere hukm ke nukte
Ae Khaliq-e-Akbar koi minnat nahin baqi
Shahid mera tu rahiyo ke hujjat nahin baqi

English:
The King understood that they would not fight him one by one:
'What does it matter? I will fight them all alone.'
Then, raising his hands towards the sky, he began to say,
'I have told the enemy all the points of Your command;
O greatest Creator, no plea is left unmade;
be my witness that no argument is left.'

Roman Urdu:
Ye keh ke parha fatiha aur tegh alam ki
Aankhon mein sitamgaron ki ik bijli si chamki
Bhaagi hui sab jama hui fauj-e-sitam ki
Us waqt ki kya shaan kahoon shah-e-umam ki
Khaibar mein jo kuchh Haidar-e-Karrar ki saj thi
Us roz wahi Zahra ke dildar ki saj thi

English:
So saying, he recited the Fatiha and raised his sword;
something like lightning flashed in the eyes of the cruel;
the army of cruelty, which had scattered, all gathered again.
How can I tell the splendour of the King of the nations at that hour?
The bearing that Haidar-e-Karrar had at Khaibar
was that day the bearing of Zahra's beloved.

Afrokhta tha soorat-e-gul roo-e-mubarak

English:
The turban of God's beloved was tied upon his head;
it was not a shining forehead but the moon appearing;
the hand of divine power had given his brows a wondrous curve;
the heart of Fatima (a) would have given a hundred lives for his eyes;
his blessed face glowed like a rose;
his blessed locks lay on his shoulders like hyacinth.

English:
His lips, like rose petals, were parched with thirst;
close to Kausar, yet kept away from the river bank;
he bore all his arms boldly,
but his heart feared that Sakina might call out:
since that innocent girl had been thirsty for twenty-four watches,
he kept looking towards the tent with longing.

Tab un mein dhansa wo khalaf-e-Haidar-e-kirdar
Darya baha ik khoon ka ki aisi hi talwar
Ghabra ke pukara Umar-e-Saad-e-sitamgar
Yun mat laro talwar nahin khaane ka Shabbir
Teeron ke siwa maar nahin khaane ka Shabbir

English:
When the army closed in on the King all at once,
that son of Haidar, of Haidar's deeds, plunged in among them;
he wielded his sword so that a river of blood flowed.
The cruel Umar ibn Saad cried out in alarm,
'Do not fight like this: Shabbir will not fall to the sword;
Shabbir will not be struck down except by arrows.'

**Stanza 25**

Roman Urdu:
Ye sun ke kamandaron hi par ja pare Shabbir
Us shah pe pehle hi chale the kai sau teer
Bijli si chamakne jo lagi Haidari shamsheer
Aage se kahin bhaagne paaye na wo be peer
Kahe ko kabhi aise bahadur se lare the
Maidan mein kamandar tahi dast pare the

English:
Hearing this, Shabbir fell upon the archers themselves;
several hundred arrows had already been shot at the King.
When the sword of Haidar began to flash like lightning,
those godless men could find nowhere to flee before him.
Had they ever fought such a hero before?
The archers lay on the field with empty hands.

**Stanza 26**

Roman Urdu:
Tarkash kahin bikhre the kahin teer zameen par
Aur saath kamanon ke gire haath bhi kat kar
Uftada kahin bazu kahin paaon kahin sar
Kuchh phenk kamanon ke tain bhaage bad akhtar
Kuchh aise musallah the ke lohon pe chhupe the
Par khauf se sehme hue goshon mein chhupe the

English:
Quivers lay scattered here, arrows on the ground there,
and hands, cut off, had fallen along with the bows;
here lay an arm, there a foot, there a head;
some ill-starred men threw down their bows and ran.
Some were so well armed that they were hidden in iron,
yet they cowered in corners, terrified.

**Stanza 27**

Roman Urdu:
The teeron ke to zakhm tan-e-shah pe aksar
Talwaren bhi aur barchhiyan bhi parti thin tan par
Zakhmon ke sabab khoon mein ghora bhi hua tar
Kehne lage aada se mukhatib ho ye sarwar
Har kas ba lab-e-ma lab-e-saghar birasanad
Saghar ba labash saqi-e-Kausar birasanad

English:
Most of the wounds on the King's body were from arrows,
but swords and lances too were falling on his body;
from the wounds his horse too was soaked in blood.
Turning to the enemy, the master began to say:
'Whoever brings the rim of a cup to my lips,
the Cupbearer of Kausar will bring a cup to his lips.'

**Stanza 28**

Haath aave ga firdaus mein Kausar ka tumhen jaam
Go jaan chali jaati hai par pyaas ko lo thaam
Is baat ko bas sunte hi phir taul ke samsam
Aise lare jo fauj kai baar hatai
Paani jo mila hota to thi fatah larai

English:
The enemy said, 'Do not so much as mention water;
you will get the cup of Kausar in paradise;
though your life is ebbing away, hold back your thirst.'
As soon as he heard this, he weighed his sword again
and fought so that he drove the army back several times;
had he had water, the battle would have been won.

**Stanza 29**

Roman Urdu:
Pyaase ne jo hamle kiye lashkar pe kai baar
Thi dhoop kari sookh gaye laal-e-guharbar
Aur maare paseene ke laga haanpne rahwar
Nazdeek tab aa kar Umar-e-Saad ne ik baar
Targheeb jo ki lashkar-e-be peer ko aa kar
Phir gher liya fauj ne Shabbir ko aa kar

English:
When the thirsty one had charged the army several times,
the sun was fierce, and his pearl-shedding ruby lips dried up,
and his steed, drenched in sweat, began to pant.
Then Umar ibn Saad came near and at once
urged on the godless army,
and the army closed in and surrounded Shabbir again.

**Stanza 30**

Roman Urdu:
Kehta tha sawaron se pas-e-pusht ye har dam
Phir teer jawano chalen Shabbir pe paiham
Be haal hai na pyaas hai taqat hai bahut kam

English:
From behind, he kept telling the horsemen:
'Young men, let the arrows fly at Shabbir again without pause;
he is spent, he is thirsty, his strength is very low;
he cannot fight you now; have no fear at all.
Keep your horses pressing on, do not fall back;
any moment now the son of Zahra will faint.'

**Stanza 31**

Roman Urdu:
Ye sunte hi sab teer lage maarne ik baar
Aur us tan-e-tanha pe hui teeron ki bauchhar
Gehre the zabas zakhm tan-e-sarwar-e-deen par
Ghash aa gaya mazloom ko girte hi zameen par

English:
Hearing this, they all began to shoot arrows at once,
and a shower of arrows fell upon that lone man;
his body was riddled, and from every wound a stream of blood burst out;
the wounded man could no longer keep his seat on the horse.
So deep were the wounds on the body of the master of the faith
that the wronged one fainted as soon as he fell to the ground.

**Stanza 32**

Roman Urdu:
Zakhmi ne bahut aap ko uth uth ke sambhala
Ab to harkat bhi nahin jism-e-shah-e-deen ko

English:
Again and again the wounded man tried to raise himself,
but he was so weak that the noble King lay down;
when even in his faint he had brought up blood several times,
the one raised in Fatima's lap could move no more.
Pointing to him, Umar ibn Saad said to the accursed Shimr,
'Now the body of the King of the faith does not even stir;

**Stanza 33**

Roman Urdu:
Tu kaate agar tan se sar-e-Sayyid-e-mazloom
Akhbar mein ho fatah tere naam par marqoom
Rutba jo tera hoga wo tujh ko nahin maloom
Hakim ke jo sar karde hain hon ge tere mahkoom
Tu farq bara paave ga aage mein aur ab mein
Izzat teri hoye gi shujaan-e-Arab mein

English:
if you cut the head of the wronged Sayyid from his body,
the victory will be written in the chronicles in your name;
you do not know what rank will be yours:
the ruler's chief men will be under your command;
you will find a great difference between then and now;
you will be honoured among the champions of Arabia.'

**Stanza 34**

Roman Urdu:
Ye sun ke wo aage barha khenche hue khanjar

English:
Hearing this, he stepped forward with his dagger drawn,
got down from his horse and climbed onto the King's chest.
When the cruel man began to slaughter the wronged one,
with what helplessness, alas, that master looked on!
The killer sat upon the breast torn in a hundred places;
blood dripped from the dagger onto the dust.

**Stanza 35**

Roman Urdu:
Jis waqt juda ho gaya tan se sar-e-Shabbir
Tab gesu pakar shah ke wo zalim-e-be peer
Latkaye hue sar ko utha kar ke ye taqreer
Khanjar se hua zibah ajab sahib-e-shamsheer
Dilband-e-Nabi Ibn-e-Yadullah ko maara
Wallah do aalam ke shahanshah ko maara

English:
When Shabbir's head had been parted from his body,
the godless tyrant seized the King's locks,
lifted the head, letting it hang, and made this speech:
'A wondrous master of the sword has been slaughtered with a dagger!
I have killed the darling of the Prophet, the son of the Hand of God;
by Allah, I have killed the emperor of both worlds!'

**Stanza 36**

Aankhen thin mundi hilte the lab yaad-e-Khuda mein

English:
So saying, he raised Shabbir's head upon a spear;
the King's moonlike face was all soaked in blood,
his fragrant locks hanging over his cheeks;
the mark of prostration on his forehead put the stars to shame.
On the spear he stood exalted among the host of martyrs;
his eyes were closed, his lips moved in remembrance of God.

**Stanza 37**

English:
Then the enemy went from the battlefield to Shabbir's tents
and closed a ring around the ladies;
when they had left them no way of escape,
Shimr set fire to the tent-walls and said,
'Fear nothing now: plunder is forbidden to no one;
now plunder the women of the Prophet's house as you please.'

**Stanza 38**

Roman Urdu:
Nagah lagi aag qanaton mein bharakne
Aur jal ke saraachon ke lage baans karakne
Bewaon ke kaleje lage seenon mein dharakne
Garmi se lage godiyon mein bachche pharakne
Namoos-e-Nabi par ajab aafat ki ghari thi
Par bibi ka parda kiye har laundi khari thi

English:
Suddenly the fire blazed up in the tent-walls,
and the bamboo poles of the pavilions crackled as they burned;
the widows' hearts began to pound in their breasts;
in the heat the children began to writhe in their arms.
It was a terrible hour of calamity for the women of the Prophet's house,
yet every maid stood screening her lady.

**Stanza 39**

Roman Urdu:
Sajjad ye kehta tha ke baba gaya maara
Bas sunte hi ye Bano ne zewar ko utara
Asbab har ik raand ka lutne laga saara
Haathon ke tale chehre the namoos-e-Nabi ke

English:
Sajjad was saying, 'Father has been slain';
as soon as Bano heard this, she took off her jewellery;
all the belongings of every widow began to be plundered;
they all went and sat apart, leaving gold and goods behind.
The faces of the Prophet's women were hidden beneath their hands;
not one of them was left so much as a sheet on her head.

**Stanza 40**

Roman Urdu:
Jab loot chuke Aal-e-Muhammad ko jafa kar
Aur aag se bhi jal chuke sab khema-e-athar
Phir oont sawari ke liye laaye wo ashrar
Sar nange un oonton pe charhi itrat-e-nachar
Ab raah ka ahwal Khaleeq aage kahe kya
Kya zulm hue ranj aseeron ne sahe kya

English:
When the cruel had finished plundering the family of Muhammad,
and all the tents of the pure had burned in the fire,
the wicked brought camels for them to ride;
bareheaded, the helpless family of the Prophet mounted those camels.
What more can Khaleeq now tell of the road ahead,
of the cruelties done, of the sorrows the captives bore?
