## About this text

Sixty-six quatrains by Mir Anees, each standing on its own. Many mourn Imam Husain (a) and Karbala: Abbas (a) still shielding the shrine, Imam Sajjad (a) weeping forty years for his father, the last nights of Muharram and the worth of tears shed for him. Others praise Imam Ali (a), or speak of humility, of old age and of the poet's longing to leave India for Najaf and Karbala; one is an elegy on Mirza Ghalib.

## Text

**Stanza 1**

Roman Urdu:
Zahir wahi ulfat ke asar hain ab tak
Qurbaan shah-e-jinn-o-bashar hain ab tak
Hote hain alam aage jab uthti hai zarih
Abbas Ali seena sipar hain ab tak

English:
The marks of that love are still to be seen;
they still give themselves for the King of jinn and men:
when the shrine is lifted, the standards go before it;
Abbas, son of Ali, still makes his breast a shield.

**Stanza 2**

Roman Urdu:
Uryan sar-e-khatoon-e-zaman hai ab tak
Namoos pe iza-o-mihan hai ab tak
Chehlum ke hain din khaak urao yaaro
Shabbir ki laash be kafan hai ab tak

English:
The head of the Lady of the age is still uncovered;
torment and affliction still fall on the honour of the women.
These are the days of the fortieth: throw dust on your heads, friends;
Shabbir's body still lies without a shroud.

**Stanza 3**

Roman Urdu:
Ulfat ho jise use wali kehte hain
Aison ko saeed-e-azali kehte hain
Is bazm mein dhoop utha ke aate hain jo log
Hans kar Tooba lakum Ali kehte hain

English:
One who has love is called a friend of God;
such people are called blessed from eternity.
To those who come to this assembly through the heat of the sun
Ali says with a smile, "Blessed are you!"

**Stanza 4**

Roman Urdu:
Thokar bhi na maaren ge agar khud sar hai
Zardar ko bhi farotani behtar hai
Hai mewa-e-nakhl-e-qad-e-insan taslim
Jhukti hai wahi shaakh jo baar awar hai

English:
If a man is arrogant, no one will so much as kick him aside;
humility becomes even the rich.
Submission is the fruit of the palm tree of man's stature:
only the branch that bears fruit bends low.

**Stanza 5**

Roman Urdu:
The zeest se apni haath dhoye Sajjad

English:
Sajjad had washed his hands of his own life;
Sajjad never slept in peace at night;
as long as he lived, no one saw him laugh;
for forty years Sajjad wept for his father.

**Stanza 6**

Soz-e-gham-e-doori ne jala rakha hai
Aahon ne kanwal dil ka bujha rakha hai
Niklo kahin jald umr aakhir hai Anees
Is Hind-e-siyah bakht mein kya rakha hai

English:
The burning grief of separation keeps me aflame;
sighs have put out the lamp of my heart.
Get away somewhere soon, Anees, for life is near its end:
what is there in this ill-starred India?

**Stanza 7**

Roman Urdu:
Shabbir ka gham ye jis ke dil par hoga
Aansoo jo gire ga shakl-e-gauhar hoga
Poochhe ga Khuda jab aise durr ki qeemat
Tab hashr mein jauhari Payambar hoga

English:
Whoever carries this grief for Shabbir in his heart,
every tear he sheds will be like a pearl;
when God asks the worth of such a pearl,
then, at the Resurrection, the jeweller will be the Prophet.

**Stanza 8**

Roman Urdu:
Sar khench na shamsheer-e-kashida ki tarah
Har ek se jhuk qaus-e-khamida ki tarah
Manzoor-e-nazar hai jo hifazat apni
Ho gosha nasheen mardum-e-deeda ki tarah

English:
Do not raise your head like a drawn sword;
bow before everyone like a bent bow;
if you have your own safety in view,
keep to a corner, like the pupil of the eye.

**Stanza 9**

Roman Urdu:
Rutba jise duniya mein Khuda deta hai
Wo dil mein farotani ko ja deta hai
Karte hain tahi maghz sana aap apni
Jo zarf ke khaali hai sada deta hai

English:
Whoever is given rank in the world by God
makes room for humility in his heart;
the empty-headed praise themselves:
it is the empty vessel that makes the noise.

**Stanza 10**

it is as if I were a rosary of bones.

Pinhan hai kabhi to gaah paida hai Ali
Hota hai guman Khuda ka jis par har baar
Allah Allah aisa banda hai Ali

he is one whom men mistake for God again and again:
Allah, Allah! Such a servant is Ali.

**Stanza 12**

Allah, Allah! How far away You are!

Kehti hai ye chashm khush rakho na mujhe
Ae ahl-e-nazar mardum-e-abi hoon main

English:
I am a drinker from the tavern of Kausar;
why should I fear the grave? I belong to Abu Turab.
This eye says, "Do not try to keep me cheerful;
O people of vision, I am a creature of the water."

**Stanza 14**
