# Before reciting Quran

## About this text

A supplication said before reciting the Qur'an. The reciter affirms that the Book is revealed from Allah to His Messenger Muhammad son of Abdullah, that it is His spoken words through the tongue of His Prophet, a guide to His creation and a connecting rope between Allah and His servants. They then ask that looking at it be an act of worship, that reciting it become pondering, and that pondering lead to taking lessons, so that they are counted among those who heed its advices and keep away from disobedience. The dua closes by asking Allah not to seal the reciter's hearing nor veil their sight, and not to let the recitation pass without reflection on its verses and its rules.

## Text

- Arabic: بِسْمِ اللہِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِیْمِ
- Transliteration: BISMILLAAHIR RAHMAANIR RAHEEM
- English: In the Name of Allah, the most Gracious, the most Merciful.
- Urdu: اللہ کے نام سے (شروع کرتا ہوں) جو بڑا مہربا ن نہایت رحم کرنے والا ہے۔

- Arabic: اَللّٰهُمَّ اِنِّيْ اَشْهَدُ اَنَّ هٰذَا كِتَابُكَ الْمُنْزَلُ مِنْ عِنْدِكَ عَلٰى رَسُوْلِكَ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهٖ وَكَلَامُكَ النَّاطِقُ عَلٰى لِسَانِ نَبِيِّكَ جَعَلْتَهٗ هَادِيًا مِنْكَ اِلٰى خَلْقِكَ وَحَبْلًا مُتَّصِلًا فِيْمَا بَيْنَكَ وَبَيْنَ عِبَادِكَ۔ اَللّٰهُمَّ اِنِّيْ نَشَرْتُ عَهْدَكَ وَكِتَابَكَ۔
- Transliteration: ALLAAHUMMA INNEE ASHHADU ANNA HAAZAA KITAABUKA AL-MUNZALU MIN 'INDIKA 'ALAA RASOOLIKA MUHAMMADI BNI 'ABDI ALLAAHI SALLAA ALLAAHU 'ALAYHI WAAALIHEE WAKALAAMUKA AN-NAATIQU 'ALAA LISAANI NABIYYIKA JA'ALTAHOO HAADIYAN MINKA ILAA KHALQIKA WAHABLAN MUTTASILAN FEEMAA BAYNAKA WABAYNA 'IBAADIKA. ALLAAHUMMA INNEE NASHARTU 'AHDAKA WAKITAABAKA.
- English: O Allah bless Muhammad and his family O Allah I bear witness that this is Your Revealed Book from You, To Your messenger Muhammad son of Abdullah, Allah’s blessings be on him and his family. And it is Your Spoken Words, through the tongue of Your Prophet, You have made it a guide from You to Your creation, And a connecting rope between You and Your servants. O Allah I have opened Your Covenant and Your Book.
- Urdu: اے معبود! میں گواہی دیتا ہوں کہ یہ تیری کتاب (قرآن)ہے جو تیری جانب سے نازل ہوئی ہے تیرے آخری رسول محمدؐ ابن عبداﷲؐ پر اور یہ تیرا کلام ہے جو تیرے نبی ؐ کی زبان سے ظاہر ہوا ہے جسے تونے اپنی طرف سے اپنی مخلوق کا ہادی بنایا ہے اور یہ وہ رسّی ہے جو تیرے بندوں کے درمیان تنی ہوئی ہے اے معبود! بے شک میں نے تیرے حکم نامے اور تیری کتاب کو کھولا ہے۔

- Arabic: اَللّٰهُمَّ فَاجْعَلْ نَظَرِيْ فِيْهِ عِبَادَةً وَقِرَاءَتِيْ فِيْهِ فِكْرًا وَ فِكْرِيْ فِيْهِ اعْتِبَارًا وَاجْعَلْنِيْ مِمَّنِ اتَّعَظَ بِبَيَانِ مَوَاعِظِكَ فِيْهِ وَاجْتَنَبَ مَعَاصِيَكَ وَلَا تَطْبَعْ عِنْدَ قِرَاءَتِيْ عَلٰى سَمْعِيْ وَلَا تَجْعَلْ عَلٰى بَصَرِيْ غِشَاوَةً وَلَا تَجْعَلْ قِرَاءَتِيْ قِرَاءَةً لَا تَدَبُّرَ فِيْهَا بَلِ اجْعَلْنِيْ اَتَدَبَّرُ آيَاتِهٖ وَ اَحْكَامَهٗ، آخِذًا بِشَرَائِعِ دِيْنِكَ وَلَا تَجْعَلْ نَظَرِيْ فِيْهِ غَفْلَةً وَلَا قِرَاءَتِيْ هَذَرًا اِنَّكَ اَنْتَ الرَّءُوْفُ الرَّحِيْمُ۔
- Transliteration: ALLAAHUMMA FAJ'AL NAZAREE FEEHI 'IBAADATAN WAQIRAA'ATEE FEEHI FIKRAN WA FIKREE FEEHI A'TIBAARAN WAJ'ALNEE MIMMANI ATTA'AZA BIBAYAANI MAWAA'IZIKA FEEHI WAJTANABA MA'AASIYAKA WALAA TATBA' 'INDA QIRAA'ATEE 'ALAA SAM'EE WALAA TAJ'AL 'ALAA BASAREE GHISHAAWATAN WALAA TAJ'AL QIRAA'ATEE QIRAA'ATAN LAA TADABBURA FEEHAA BALI AJ'ALNEE ATADABBARU AAYAATIHEE WA AHKAAMAHOO, AAKHIZAN BISHARAA'I'I DEENIKA WALAA TAJ'AL NAZAREE FEEHI GHAFLATAN WALAA QIRAA'ATEE HAZARAN INNAKA ANTA AR-RA'OOFU AR-RAHEEMU.
- English: O Allah, so make my looking at it an act of worship and my reciting it a pondering, and my pondering over it, a way to derive lessons. (O Allah) include me from those who are advised by the narrations of its advices, and who avoid Your disobedience. (O Allah) do not seal my ears when I’m reciting it and do not place a curtain over my sight, Nor make my recitation a recitation lacking pondering, Rather make me from among those who ponder over its verses and its rules, Deriving the ways to Your religion, and do not make me heedless when I’m looking at it, nor make my reciting a waste. Surely You are the Most Gentle, the Most Merciful.
- Urdu: اے معبود! پس اس پر میرے نظر کرنے کو عبادت اور میری تلاوت کو اس پر غور اور میرے اس غور کو نصیحت قرار دے اور مجھے ان لوگوں میں رکھ جو اس میں تیرے بیان سے نصیحت حاصل کرتے ہیں اور تیری نافرمانیوں سے دور رہتے ہیں اور اس کی تلاوت کے وقت میرے کان بند نہ کر میری آنکھوں پر پردہ نہ ڈال اور میری تلاوت کو ایسی تلاوت نہ بنا جس میں غور وفکر نہ ہو بلکہ مجھے ایسا بنادے کہ میں اس کی آیتوں اور احکام پر غور کروں اور تیرے دین کے اصول معلوم کروں اور اس پر میری نظر کو بے توجہی اورمیری تلاوت کو بے فائدہ نہ بنا بے شک تو بہت مہربان، بڑا رحم والا ہے۔

- Arabic: اَللّٰهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلٰى مُحَمَّدٍ وَّآلِ مُحَمَّدٍ۔
- Transliteration: ALLAHUMMA SWALLE ALAA MUHAMMADIW WA AALE MUHAMMADIN
- English: Allah’s (s.w.t) choicest blessings be upon Mohammed and his holy progeny.
- Urdu: اے معبود! رحمت نازل فرما حضرت محمدؐ اور انکی آل ؑپر۔
