Aaj Shabbir pe kya aalam-e-tanhai hai
Zulm ki chaand pe Zahra ke ghata chhaayi hai
Us taraf lashkar-e-aada mein saf aarai hai
Yaan na beta na bhateeja na koi bhai hai
Barchhiyan khaate chale jaate hain talwaron mein
Maar lo pyaase ko hai shor sitamgaron mein
What solitude has come upon Shabbir today!
The cloud of oppression has covered Zahra's moon;
On that side the enemy army is drawing up its ranks;
Here there is no son, no nephew, no brother.
Taking lance-thrusts, he presses on among the swords;
Among the oppressors the cry is, "Kill the thirsty one!"
Stanza 2
Zakhmi bazu hain kamar kham hai badan mein nahin taab
Dagmagaate hain nikal jaati hai qadmon se rikab
Shiddat-e-zoaf mein jis ja pe thehar jaate hain
Saikron teer-e-sitam tan se guzar jaate hain
His arms are wounded, his back is bent, there is no strength in his body;
He sways, and the stirrup slips from his feet;
Thirst overwhelms him; his lips are dry, his eyes brimming with tears;
With his sword he answers every blow of the enemy.
Wherever, in his utter weakness, he comes to a halt,
Hundreds of cruel arrows pass through his body.
Stanza 3
His blood-soaked locks cling to his cheeks;
His shoulders, slashed again and again by swords, hang down;
Arrows are lodged in him; blood flows from their notches;
One life is beset by a hundred thousand torments from the cruel.
His one care is to give his head in prostration to the One he worships;
The blows of the swords leave him no respite to draw breath.
Stanza 4
Khoon se tar pech amaame ke hain sar zakhmi hai
Hai jabeen chaand si pur noor magar zakhmi hai
Seena sab barchhiyon se ta ba kamar zakhmi hai
Teer-e-bedad se dil zakhmi, jigar zakhmi hai
Zarb-e-shamsheer se bekar hain bazu donon
Zulm ke teeron se majrooh hain pehlu donon
The folds of his turban are soaked with blood; his head is wounded;
His brow is radiant as the moon, but it is wounded;
His whole breast down to the waist is wounded by lances;
By the arrows of injustice his heart is wounded, his liver is wounded.
Both his arms are useless from the blows of swords;
Both his sides are wounded by the arrows of cruelty.
Stanza 5
Barchhi aa kar koi pehlu mein laga jaata hai
Maarta hai koi neza to ghash aa jaata hai
Barhte hain zakhm-e-badan, zor ghata jaata hai
Band aankhen hain, sar-e-pak jhuka jaata hai
Gird-e-Zahra-o-Ali girya kunan phirte hain
Ghul hai ghore se Imam-e-do jahan girte hain
One comes and drives a lance into his side;
Another strikes with a spear, and he falls into a faint;
The wounds on his body grow, his strength ebbs away;
His eyes are closed; his pure head droops.
Zahra and Ali circle round him, weeping;
There is a cry: "The Imam of both worlds is falling from his horse!"
Stanza 6
Girte hain qatra-e-khoon zakhm-e-jabeen se paiham
Dast-e-majrooh se khinch sakte nahin teer-e-sitam
Fikr hai bakhshish-e-ummat ki kuchh apna nahin gham
Drops of blood fall ceaselessly from the wound on his brow;
With his wounded hands he cannot draw out the cruel arrows;
His care is the forgiveness of the community; for himself he has no grief;
With his dry tongue he thanks God every moment.
His cloak is a sieve from the arrows; his robe is red as a rose;
His ruby lips are wounded; his mouth is full of blood.
Stanza 7
Zeen se hota hai juda dosh-e-Muhammad ka makeen
Chaman-e-Fatima ka sarv hai mail ba zameen
Barchhiyan gird hain aur beech mein hain sarwar-e-deen
Hai ye nazdeek gire mohr-e-nubuwwat ka nageen
Paaon har baar rikabon se nikal jaate hain
Ya Ali kehti hai Zainab to sambhal jaate hain
The one who rode on Muhammad's shoulder is parting from the saddle;
The cypress of Fatima's garden is bending to the ground;
Lances surround him, and in their midst is the Chief of the faith;
The gem of the seal of prophethood is about to fall.
Again and again his feet slip from the stirrups;
When Zainab cries "Ya Ali!" he steadies himself.
Stanza 8
Laakh talwaren hain aur ek tan-e-athar hai
Ek mazloom hai aur zalimon ka lashkar hai
Saikron khanjar-e-faulad hain aur ik sar hai
Na koi yaar, na hamdam, na koi yawar hai
Baag ghore ki latakti hai, utha sakte nahin
Saamne ahl-e-haram rote hain, ja sakte nahin
There are a hundred thousand swords and one most pure body;
One wronged man, and an army of oppressors;
Hundreds of steel daggers, and a single head;
No friend, no companion, no helper.
The horse's reins hang loose; he cannot lift them;
Before him the women of his household weep; he cannot go to them.
Stanza 9
Koi Sayyid ka nahin aah, bachaane waala
Harbe laakhon hain, aur ik zakhm uthaane waala
Pyaas mein koi nahin, paani pilaane waala
Sambhle kis tarah bhala, barchhiyan khaane waala
Charkh se aag barasti hai zameen jalti hai
Maare garmi ke zaban khushk hai, lu chalti hai
Alas, there is no one to save the Sayyid;
A hundred thousand weapons, and one man to bear the wounds;
In his thirst there is no one to give him water;
How can one who is taking lance-thrusts stay steady?
Fire rains from the sky; the earth is burning;
His tongue is dry from the heat; the scorching wind blows.
Stanza 10
Kahin dam lene ko saaya nahin, hai waqt-e-zawal
Ainthi jaati hai zaban pyaas ki shiddat hai kamal
Kabhi Zainab ka hai gham gaah Sakina ka khayal
Din jo dhalta hai to Hazrat hue jaate hain nidhaal
Misl-e-khursheed, badan zoaf se tharrata hai
Nayyar-e-burj-e-imamat pe zawal aata hai
There is no shade anywhere to rest in; it is the hour of the sun's decline;
His tongue is shrivelling; the thirst is extreme;
Now he grieves for Zainab, now he thinks of Sakina;
As the day declines, the Hazrat grows faint.
Like the sun, his body trembles with weakness;
Decline is coming upon the sun of the house of Imamate.
Stanza 11
Kehte hain zalimon se, khushk zaban dikhla kar
Bahr-e-Haq paani ka, ik jaam pila do la kar
Ahl-e-keen kehte hain ye tegh-e-sitam chamka kar
Aab-e-shamsheer piyo barchhiyon ke phal kha kar
Ye sukhan sun ke bhi ghussa nahin farmaate hain
Yaas se soo-e-falak dekh ke reh jaate hain
Showing his dry tongue, he says to the oppressors,
"For God's sake, bring me a single cup of water."
The hateful flash their cruel swords and say,
"Eat the fruit of the lances, then drink the water of the sword!"
Even hearing these words he shows no anger;
In despair he only looks up towards heaven.
Stanza 12
Arz karte hain ye Khaliq se ke ae Rab-e-ghafoor!
Tu hai aalim ke nahin kuchh tere bande ka qusoor
Karte hain ye mujhe be jurm-o-khata teghon se choor
Haath ummat pe uthana nahin mujh ko manzoor
Jaante hain ke Muhammad ka nawaasa hoon main
Paani dete nahin do roz ka pyaasa hoon main
He prays to the Creator: "O forgiving Lord!
You know that Your servant is in no way at fault;
Though I have done no crime or wrong, they cut me to pieces with swords;
I will not raise my hand against the community.
They know that I am Muhammad's grandson;
They give me no water; I have been thirsty for two days."
Stanza 13
Roza rakha to chhupa mehr numayan hui shab
Bhook mein khuld ka khana mujhe imdad kiya
Bhej kar harni ka bachcha mera dil shaad kiya
"From childhood You have cherished me, O Lord;
You granted whatever I asked of You;
On Eid Your Beloved became my mount;
When I kept a fast, the sun hid and night appeared;
When I was hungry You helped me with food from Paradise;
You gladdened my heart by sending a fawn."
Stanza 14
Ab agar hai ye teri maslahat ae Rab-e-qadeer
Ho rawan halq pe is pyaase ke aab-e-shamsheer
Mere Maula ba sar-o-chashm hai hazir Shabbir
Hukm-e-hakim mein ye taqat hai karoon main takheer
Jald gardan pe rawan, khanjar-e-burran howe
Ae khusha wo, jo teri raah mein qurbaan howe
"Now if this is Your purpose, O Almighty Lord,
That the water of the sword should run over this thirsty one's throat,
My Master, Shabbir is here and ready with all his heart;
Have I the strength to delay when the Ruler commands?
Let the keen dagger pass quickly over my neck;
Happy is he who is sacrificed in Your way!"
Stanza 15
Gham nahin kuchh mujhe go bekas-o-be yaar hoon main
Zer-e-shamsheer gala rakhne ko tayyar hoon main
Tu madadgar hai, mukhtar hai lachar hoon main
Waqt-e-mushkil hai, inayat ka talabgar hoon main
Tere sajde mein ye sar tan se juda ho jaawe
Ahd-e-tifli ka jo wada hai, wafa ho jaawe
"I have no grief, though I am helpless and friendless;
I am ready to lay my throat beneath the sword;
You are the Helper, You hold all power; I am powerless;
It is a hard hour; I seek Your grace.
Let this head be parted from my body in prostration to You;
Let the promise made in childhood be kept."
Stanza 16
Lab pe takbeer ho, jab halq pe khanjar ho rawan
Dil mein ho yaad teri, band ho jis waqt zaban
Dam bharoon tera hi tan se jo nikalne lage jaan
Baad-e-chehlum jo mujhe qabr muyassar howe
Zakhmi tan par na fishar ae mere dawar howe
"By Your grace make the hardships of death easy;
Let the takbir be on my lips when the dagger runs over my throat;
Let Your remembrance be in my heart when my tongue falls silent;
Let me breathe Your name alone as my soul begins to leave my body.
When after the fortieth day a grave is granted me,
Let the grave not press upon this wounded body, O my Judge."
Stanza 17
Rahm kar rahm kar sharminda hoon ae baar-e-Khuda
Koi tohfa tere laiq nahin paata hai Husain
Haath khaali tere darbar mein aata hai Husain
"Have mercy, have mercy; I am ashamed, O Lord God;
I could not render the service that was Your due;
From fear of the Day of Gathering my body trembles from head to foot;
When my deeds are questioned, what shall I say?
Husain finds no gift worthy of You;
Husain comes to Your court empty-handed."
Stanza 18
Nahin mayoos ke rahmat hai teri be payan
Mushkilen bandon ki kar deta hai dam mein aasan
Shukr-e-altaf-o-inayat mein qasir hai zaban
Aasiyon se bhi mohabbat nahin kam karta hai
Jurm wo karte hain to lutf-o-karam karta hai
"My heart takes strength from Your grace, O Merciful One;
I do not despair, for Your mercy is boundless;
You make Your servants' hardships easy in a moment;
My tongue falls short in thanks for Your favours and kindnesses.
Even towards sinners Your love does not lessen;
They commit offences, and You answer with kindness and grace."

Main teri raah mein mazloomi se hota hoon fida
Tu hai aagah ke do din ka hoon bhooka pyaasa
Chaahta hoon main yahi, apni shahadat ka sila
Maghfirat ummat-e-aasi ki ho ae baar-e-Khuda
Hai gawara mujhe jo kuchh ke aziyat howe
Un ko duniya mein bhi uqba mein bhi raahat howe
"In Your way I give my life, wronged and helpless;
You know that I have been hungry and thirsty for two days;
This alone I ask as the reward of my martyrdom:
That the sinful community be forgiven, O Lord God.
Whatever torment comes to me, I accept;
Let them have comfort in this world and in the next."

Arz karte the ye Khaliq se shah-e-banda nawaz
Yak bayak aalam-e-bala se ye aayi aawaz
Ae mere sher ke farzand, nabi ke damsaz
Tujh se hum khush hain pazira hai tera ajz-o-niyaz
Mard hai aashiq-e-kamil hai, wafadar hai tu
Jo kaha wo hi kiya sadiq-ul-iqrar hai tu
So the King who cherishes his servants prayed to the Creator,
When suddenly a voice came from the world above:
"O son of My lion, O intimate of the Prophet,
We are pleased with you; your humility and prayer are accepted;
You are a true man, a perfect lover, a faithful one;
What you said, you did; you are true to your word."

Tu bhi maqbool hai aur teri ibadat bhi qubool
Ye itaat bhi hai maqbool, ye taat bhi qubool
Aajizi bhi teri maqbool, shahadat bhi qubool
Teri khatir se hamen bakhshish-e-ummat bhi qubool
Hum ne khail-e-shohada ka tujhe sardar kiya
Ummat-e-Ahmad-e-mukhtar ka mukhtar kiya
"You are accepted, and your worship is accepted;
This obedience is accepted, and this devotion too;
Your humility is accepted, and your martyrdom too;
For your sake We accept the forgiveness of the community too.
We have made you chief of the company of martyrs;
We have made you master over the community of Ahmad, the Chosen."

Dost daaron ka tere gulshan-e-jannat hai maqam
Ta abad saaya-e-Tooba mein karen ge aaram
Hon ge mahshoor tere saath azadar tamam
Gham na kha! ahl-e-jahan tere muhib saare hain
Tu hai pyaara, tere pyaare bhi hamen pyaare hain
"The garden of Paradise is the home of those who love you;
For ever they will rest in the shade of the Tooba tree;
All your mourners will be raised with you;
The heat of Hell is forbidden to those who weep for you.
Do not grieve! All the people of the world love you;
You are dear to Us, and those dear to you are dear to Us too."

Hon ge har ranj se, mahfooz tere taziya daar
Sakhti-e-marg na un ko hai, na eeza-e-fishar
Dam-e-murdan nazar aawe ga Ali ka deedar
Qabr se gulshan-e-firdaus ki dekhen ge bahar
Daar-e-duniya hi mein hain jo so unhen eeza hai
Aankhen jab band huin phir, dar-e-jannat wa hai
"Those who keep your mourning will be safe from every sorrow;
For them there is no hardship in death, no torment of the grave's pressing;
At the moment of death they will see the face of Ali;
From the grave they will see the spring of the garden of Paradise.
Whatever pain they suffer is only while they are in this world;
Once their eyes close, the door of Paradise stands open."

Teer kha kha ke kisi ne bhi hai yun shukr kiya
Taat-e-khalq se ik sajda hai afzal tera
Arsh-e-azam pe, malaik teri karte hain sana
Saara ghar meri mohabbat mein, fana tu ne kiya
Bandagi ka tha jo kuchh haq wo ada tu ne kiya
"There has never been a worshipper like you, nor will there ever be;
Has anyone ever given thanks like this while struck by arrow after arrow?
A single prostration of yours is worth more than the worship of all creation;
On the mighty Throne the angels sing your praise.
For love of Me you gave up your whole household;
All that was due in service, you have fulfilled."
Stanza 25
Hashr tak roye ga mazloomi pe teri aalam
Tera matam nahin howe ga jahan mein kabhi kam
Rauza-e-pak ko tere ye sharaf bakhshen ge hum
Aayen ge jis ki ziyarat ko malak ho ke baham
Ye zameen arsh se rutbe mein siwa howe gi
Khaak turbat ki teri khaak-e-shifa howe gi
"Until the Day of Judgement the world will weep for the wrongs done to you;
Your mourning will never grow less in the world;
We shall give your pure shrine such honour
That angels will come together to visit it;
This ground will stand higher in rank than the Throne;
The dust of your grave will be the dust of healing."
Stanza 26
Ye sada sun ke hue shaad shah-e-har do sara
Aa gayi az sar-e-nau jism mein taqat goya
Mere Maula main teri banda nawazi ke fida
Kyun na mumtaz ho wo tu jise rutba bakhshe
Is kaf-e-khaak ko kya rutba-e-aala bakhshe
Hearing this voice, the King of both worlds rejoiced;
It was as if strength had come back into his body anew;
Bowing into prostration, he wept and said humbly,
"My Master, I would give my life for Your kindness to Your servants;
Why should he not be honoured to whom You grant rank?
What a lofty rank You have given this handful of dust!"
Stanza 27
Alas, the Master had not yet raised his humbled head
When suddenly someone struck his chest with a spear;
Fainting, the exalted Imam began to fall from his horse;
The voice of the Lady of the Resurrection was heard: "In the name of Allah!"
Ali came in alarm from Paradise to hold him;
God's Beloved ran with his arms outstretched.
Stanza 28
Ik jafa kesh ne phir pehlu pe neza maara
Gard aalood qaba-e-shah-e-pur noor hui
Ret zakhmon ke liye marham-e-kafoor hui
Then a cruel man struck his side with a spear;
Breaking through his breast, it pierced his heart through and through;
He had no strength left to keep his seat on the horse's back;
That star of God's Throne fell to the ground.
The robe of the radiant King was covered in dust;
The sand became a camphor salve for his wounds.

Khaak-o-khoon mein jo tarapte the, shahanshah-e-zaman
Gul ke manind khule jaate the sab zakhm-e-badan
Talab-e-aab mein khole hue the khushk dahan
Gird khenche hue talwaren khare the dushman
Gham-e-namoos bhi tha, pyaas ki bhi shiddat thi
As the emperor of the age writhed in dust and blood,
All the wounds of his body were opening like flowers;
Seeking water, his dry mouth stood open;
Around him stood the enemy with swords drawn.
There was grief for the honour of his household, and fierce thirst too;
His one regret was that he had not gone back to see Sakina again.

Kaan mein aati thi Zainab ke sada-e-jaan kaah
Dil tarap jaata tha karte the ajab dard se aah
Raah roke hue kheme ki, khare the gumrah
Neem wa chashm se karte the soo-e-khema nigah
Tan-e-zakhmi pe jo paikan-e-sitam garte the
Khaak se uthte the aur kaanp ke gir parte the
Zainab's heart-rending cry kept reaching his ears;
His heart writhed; he sighed with a strange pain;
The misguided stood barring the way to the tents;
With half-open eyes he looked towards the tents.
As the cruel arrowheads dug into his wounded body,
He would rise from the dust, and trembling, fall again.

Kehta tha fauj mein sab se Umar-e-bad akhtar
Khinche kyun teghon ko haathon mein khare ho shashdar
Reg-e-taftida pe hai ghash mein, Ali ka dilbar
Jaao kya der hai, kaato shah-e-mazloom ka sar
Tegh se Fatima Zahra ka gala chaak karo
Jald haan khatima-e-Panjtan-e-pak karo
Umar ibn Saad, the ill-starred, was saying to everyone in the army,
"Why do you stand dumbfounded, swords drawn in your hands?
Ali's darling lies fainting on the burning sand;
Go, why delay? Cut off the head of the wronged King;
Slit Fatima Zahra's throat with the sword;
Quickly now, put an end to the pure Panjtan!"

Auraten hain kai kheme mein ghareeb-o-nachar
Mar chuke pehle hi jo khoon ke the dawedar
Ik pisar hai so wo beemar hai mar jaawe ga
"What is hard about cutting off the head of such a wronged man,
Who has no helper at all, no one to grieve for him, no friend?
There are a few women in the tent, poor and helpless;
Those who could claim his blood are already dead;
No one will even come to demand the blood-price;
There is one son, and he is sick and will die."

Kaanp kar kehte the sab hum se na hoga ye sitam
Zibah farzand-e-Muhammad ko nahin karne ke hum
Aise mazloom ki chhaati pe jo rakhe ga qadam
Paaon jal jaaye ga tharraaye ga arsh-e-azam
Trembling, they all said, "We cannot do this cruelty;
We will not slaughter the son of Muhammad;
Whoever sets his foot on the breast of such a wronged man,
His foot will burn, and the mighty Throne will tremble;
God's Beloved will come from his grave beating his breast;
By God, we shall be burnt by Fatima's sigh."

Bint-e-Ahmad nahin, Haidar nahin, Allah nahin
"Who would slaughter a helpless man who has done no wrong?
Does anyone run a sword over a thirsty man's throat?
Though he is helpless, killing Shabbir is no easy thing;
On the Day of Judgement God's Beloved will seize us by the hem.
You think there is no one to demand his blood:
Is there no daughter of Ahmad, no Haidar, no Allah?"

Tha jo damsaz-e-Umar ibn-e-Numair-e-azlam
Barh ke tegh us ne sar-e-shah pe maari us dam
Ta jabeen ho gaya majrooh sar-e-shah-e-umam
Thaam kar sar ko pukaare ye Imam-e-aalam
Na muyassar tujhe is haath se khana howe
Tu tahi dast jahannam ko rawana howe
Ibn Numair, the arch-tyrant, who was close to Umar ibn Saad,
Stepped forward and at that moment struck the King's head with his sword;
The head of the King of the nations was wounded down to the brow;
Holding his head, the Imam of the world cried out,
"May you never eat with this hand;
May you go to Hell empty-handed."

Chaaha zalim ne ke phir shah pe kare tegh ka waar
Dekha angusht ba dandan hain rasool-e-mukhtar
Khushk us waqt hue dast-e-sitamgar ik baar
Haath se tegh giri khauf se bhaaga, khoon khwar
Yaan sar-e-pak se Hazrat ke lahu jaari tha
Kham soo-e-qibla the, band aankhen thin ghash taari tha
The tyrant meant to strike the King with his sword again,
But he saw the chosen Messenger (s) biting his finger in dismay;
At that moment the tyrant's hands withered at once;
The sword fell from his hand, and the bloodthirsty man fled in fear.
Here blood was flowing from the Hazrat's pure head;
He was bowed towards the Qibla, his eyes were closed, a faint was upon him.

Khalaf-e-Ahmad-e-mukhtar ka qatil hoon main
Kaam mera hai, isi kaam ke qabil hoon main
When the Chief no longer had strength even to writhe,
A cry went up: "Haidar's son has fainted!"
Shimr came forward from the army with his dagger drawn;
He said to them all, "Now cut off the Chief's head;
I am the killer of the son of Ahmad, the Chosen;
The work is mine; I am the one fit for this work."

Jigar-e-Fatima Zahra pe chali tegh-e-do dam
Aage Zainab ke hue zibah Husain aah sitam
Peet kar bint-e-shahanshah-e-zaman rone lagi
Baap ko beti, biradar ko behan rone lagi
Saying this, the emperor of the nations fainted again on the field;
The arch-tyrant Shimr set his foot on that most holy breast;
The two-edged blade passed over the heart of Fatima Zahra;
Before Zainab's eyes Husain was slaughtered: alas, the cruelty!
Beating her breast, the daughter of the emperor of the age began to weep;
The daughter wept for her father, the sister for her brother.

Gham se khoon ho gaya seene mein kaleja saara
Kis se is dard-o-musibat ka bayan hota hai
Aankhen roti hain qalam rota hai dil rota hai
In the enemy army the drum of victory was beaten;
A cry went up: "The darling of the Lion of God is slain!"
Enough, Anees: I have no strength left to speak;
With grief my whole heart has turned to blood within my breast;
Who can tell of this pain and calamity?
The eyes weep, the pen weeps, the heart weeps.
