Using this site

This site publishes two different kinds of time, and confusing them is the mistake most likely to cost you something.

The waqt table is astronomical: it is when a prayer becomes valid at this latitude. The jama’ah times are a decision by the committee about when people actually gather. They are not the same numbers and are not meant to be. Arriving for jama’ah at a waqt time will mean arriving at the wrong moment.

Maghrib is not sunset. In Ja’fari fiqh maghrib begins once the eastern redness has passed — roughly a quarter of an hour after sunset here. The timetable lists sunset and maghrib as two separate moments for that reason. If you are opening a fast, use maghrib.

No Hijri date on this site is a fixed Gregorian date. The Islamic month begins with the sighting of the moon, which is decided month by month and cannot be settled in advance by calculation. Dates shown as “expected” are exactly that, and are subject to confirmation by the Centre. Do not book travel, leave or anything else that cannot be moved on the strength of a date this site shows before it is confirmed.

The Islamic day begins at maghrib, not at midnight, so an occasion listed for a given day begins the evening before by the Gregorian calendar.

The congregation follows different maraji. Where they differ on a date or a ruling, this site shows the positions rather than presenting one as the only correct one. Follow your own marja. Nothing here is a fatwa, and the site is not a substitute for asking a qualified alim — the Centre has one.

Jumu’ah is held when a khateeb is available and enough people can attend. It is announced; it is not a standing weekly fixture you should assume.

An account is optional. Give accurate details, keep your password to yourself, and tell us if you think someone else has got into your account. You are responsible for what is done through it.

The Centre may suspend or remove an account that is used to abuse others, to misrepresent the Centre, or to interfere with the site. You can ask us to delete your account at any time.

This is a place of worship, and the same manners apply to its website. Do not post or send anything abusive, sectarian, defamatory, or that insults the beliefs of others. Do not use the site to advertise, to campaign politically, or to collect the congregation’s details for your own purposes.

Do not attempt to break, overload or gain unauthorised access to the site, and do not scrape it in bulk.

Anything you submit for publication — a comment, a notice — is reviewed before it appears, and the Centre may decline to publish or later remove it. That is editorial judgement, not censorship of an individual.

Gifts are currently made by direct bank transfer. Use the reference shown for the fund you intend, because several categories of Islamic giving are restricted in their use and the Centre must not co-mingle them. A gift given to a restricted fund will be applied to that fund.

Khums is not a single donation. It has two legally distinct halves, and sahm-e-Imam may only be disposed of with the written ijaza of the marja. The Centre will tell you which of its funds hold what, and will not treat a khums payment as an ordinary donation.

The Centre is registered with the ACNC but does not hold deductible gift recipient endorsement, because advancing religion is not a DGR category in Australia. Donations are not tax deductible. Any receipt is a record of your gift, not a tax claim.

Gifts are generally not refundable once applied. If you have given in error, tell us as soon as you can and the committee will consider it.

A form on this site sends a request. It is not a confirmed booking, a confirmed nikah, or a confirmed anything, until a person from the Centre confirms it with you. Hall use may require a bond and is subject to the Centre’s conditions at the time.

For a funeral, do not rely on a web form. The Centre provides ghusl, kafan, janaza and burial at any hour — telephone, day or night.

A janaza notice is published only when the family has asked the Centre to publish it, and is removed or amended at the family’s request.

The Centre’s own writing, design and photographs belong to the Centre. You are welcome to read, print and share them for personal and community use, with attribution and unaltered. Do not republish them commercially without asking.

Religious texts — Quran, dua, ziyarat, a’maal — are reproduced for the benefit of the congregation with their sources named where known. If you hold rights in a translation reproduced here and would rather it were not, write to us and it will be removed.

Photographs and video are taken at the Centre’s events and may appear in the gallery or a stream. The Centre does not publish identifiable photographs of women, and does not publish imagery of matam involving blood or blades. If you appear in something published here and want it removed, ask and it will be.

Majalis are sometimes streamed or recorded. Attending an event where recording is taking place may mean you are captured incidentally; tell a committee member if that is a problem and it will be accommodated.

This site is run by a volunteer committee for the benefit of the community. We try to keep it accurate and available, but we do not promise that it will be free of errors or always reachable, and we may change or withdraw anything on it.

Links to other sites are for convenience. The Centre does not control them and is not responsible for what they contain.

To the extent the law allows, the Centre is not liable for loss arising from relying on this site — which is why the section on times and dates is written as plainly as it is. Nothing here excludes rights you have under Australian Consumer Law that cannot be excluded.

These terms are governed by the law of Queensland, Australia. If we change them, the date below changes. Your privacy is covered separately.
