Aamad Aamad Haram-e-Shah Ki Darbar Mein Hai

by Mir Babar Ali Anees · for Arrival of the Karbala captives in Damascus

About this marsiya

The captives of Karbala are brought into the court of Yazid in Damascus amid celebration: Imam Sajjad (a), sick and in fetters, walks ahead of the women, who are roped together, and little Sakina (a) asks where her father is. Zainab (a) answers Yazid's taunts with the verses revealed for the Prophet's (s) family, and protests when he strikes the lips of Imam Husain's (a) head. The poem breaks off at the prison, which the poet says he cannot bring himself to describe.

Aamad aamad haram-e-shah ki darbar mein hai Subh se jashn ka ghul Shaam ke bazaar mein hai Sohbat-e-aish-e-tarab majlis-e-ghaddar mein hai Shor-o-faryad-o-buka itrat-e-athar mein hai Naubaten bajti hain dushman to khushi hote hain Fatima peetti hain, sher-e-Khuda rote hain

The King's womenfolk are being brought into the court;
since morning the noise of celebration has filled the market of Syria;
in the traitor's assembly there is a party of pleasure and delight;
among the pure family there is crying, lament and weeping.
The drums are beating; the enemies rejoice;
Fatima beats her breast, and the Lion of God weeps.

Aage aage to hain Sajjad jhukaaye gardan Paaon beri mein, gala tauq mein gardan mein rasan Misl-e-khursheed-e-falak sharm se larzan hai badan Chaak hai gham mein gareban-e-qaba ta daaman Baith jaate hain to jhunjhla ke uthaate hain laeen Boriyan nezon ki, shaanon mein chhupaate hain laeen

In front of all goes Sajjad, his neck bowed,
his feet in fetters, a collar round his throat, a rope round his neck;
like the sun in the sky his body trembles with shame;
in his grief the collar of his tunic is torn down to the hem.
When he sits down, the accursed angrily force him up;
the accursed drive the butts of their lances into his shoulders.

Stanza 3

Pindliyan sooji hain, aur tauq se chhilta hai gala Sakht eeza mein hai, farzand-e-shah-e-Karb-o-Bala Khaar talwon mein hain, maqtal se jo paidal hai chala Dhajjiyan paaon mein baandhe hai, wo naazon ka pala Us ki mazloomi pe betaab haram hote hain Deeda-e-halqa-e-zanjeer lahu rote hain

His shins are swollen, and the collar chafes his throat;
the son of the King of Karbala is in cruel pain;
there are thorns in his soles, for he has walked from the field of slaughter;
that tenderly raised one has rags bound round his feet.
The women are distraught at the wrongs done to him;
the eyes of the chain's links weep blood.

Stanza 4

Peechhe beemar ke hai qafila-e-ahl-e-haram Chup hain tasweer se goya ke kisi mein nahin dam Dukhtar-e-Fatima Zahra ka ajab hai aalam Thartharee jism mein hai uth nahin sakte hain qadam Ro ke farmaati hain kis goshe mein jaaye Zainab Haath khul jaayen to munh apna chhupaaye Zainab

Behind the sick one comes the caravan of the women;
they are silent as pictures, as if there were no breath in any of them.
Strange is the state of the daughter of Fatima Zahra:
a trembling runs through her body; her feet will not lift;
weeping, she says, "Into what corner can Zainab go?
If her hands were untied, Zainab would hide her face."

Stanza 5

Kabhi Sajjad se kehti hain, ba aah-o-zari Mujh ko darbar ki aafat se bachao waari Kar ke zari wo bayan karta hai wo aazari Sabr farmao jo marzi-e-janab-e-Bari Kam na kuchh martaba-e-aal-e-Aba hoye ga Aasiyon ka isi parda mein bhala hoye ga

At times she says to Sajjad, sighing and weeping,
"I would give my life for you; save me from the ordeal of the court."
Weeping, that afflicted one answers,
"Be patient with whatever is the will of the Creator;
the rank of the family of the cloak will not be lessened in the least;
through this very veil the sinners will find their good."

Stanza 6

Gardanen baara aseeron ki hain aur ek rasan Jis tarah hote hain guldaste mein gulha-e-chaman Rishta daaran-e-Ali sab hain giraftar-e-mihan Sharm ke maare mui jaati hai ik shab ki dulhan Dam ba dam saas bhi sar peetti hai saath us ke Abhi kangna na khula tha ke bandhe haath us ke

There are the necks of twelve captives, and one rope,
as the flowers of a garden are gathered in a bouquet;
all of Ali's kin are caught in afflictions;
the bride of a single night is dying of shame;
again and again her mother-in-law beats her head beside her;
her wedding bracelet had not yet been untied when her hands were bound.

Stanza 7

Hai is rassi mein nanha sa Sakina ka galu Dam ghuta jaata hai aankhon se rawan hain aansoo Chaak kurte ka gareban hai, pareshan gesu Sooje to gaal hain kaanon se tapakta hai lahu Aah har gaam pe seene se nikal jaati hai Jab ghurakte hain sitamgar to dahal jaati hai

In this rope is little Sakina's tiny throat;
she is choking; tears are streaming from her eyes;
the collar of her shirt is torn, her locks dishevelled;
her cheeks are swollen, blood is dripping from her ears;
at every step a sigh escapes her breast;
when the tyrants scold her, she shudders with fear.

Stanza 8

Maan se karti hai ishaara wo giraftar-e-sitam Rassi khulwa do nahin ghut ke nikal jaaye ga dam Ro ke wo kehti hai majboor hoon main kushta-e-gham Haaye bachchi teri qismat mein tha ye dard-o-alam Sadqe ammaan ye girah uqda kusha khole ga Bibi is uqda-e-mushkil ko Khuda khole ga

That victim of cruelty signs to her mother:
"Have the rope loosened, or I shall choke to death."
Weeping, her mother says, "I am helpless, slain by grief;
alas, my child, this pain and sorrow were in your fate.
Your mother would give her life for you: the Untier of knots will untie this knot;
little lady, God will untie this hard knot."

Stanza 9

Maan se ro ro ke wo nadan ye karti hai bayan Kis ka darbar hai, is haal se jaati ho kahan Ye to keh do kahin baba bhi milen ge Ammaan Kai din guzre hain wo hain meri aankhon se nihan Bhool jaaye ga ye sab dukh jo unhen paaoon gi Daud kar chaand si chhaati se lipat jaaoon gi

Weeping and weeping, that innocent child says to her mother,
"Whose court is this? Where are you going in this state?
Just tell me, Mother: shall we find Father somewhere?
Many days have passed since he was hidden from my eyes.
All this pain will be forgotten when I find him;
I shall run and cling to his moon-like breast."

Stanza 10

Kahin darbar mein Ammaan wo agar mujh ko mile Dekhna karti hoon kaise shah-e-wala se gale Wo khabar leven na gardan meri rassi se chale Is ko yun bhoolte hain baap se bachcha jo pale Wajh kya kaun si taqseer pe munh mora hai? Seeliyan khaane ko aada mein mujhe chhora hai

"Mother, if I find him somewhere in the court,
watch how I throw my arms round the noble King's neck!
He does not ask after me, though my neck is chafed by the rope;
is this how one forgets a child who has grown up with her father?
What is the reason? For what fault has he turned his face away?
He has left me among the enemies to be slapped."

Stanza 11

Kaan zakhmi hue aur li na khabar waah re pyaar Khoob bhoole mujhe baba ki mohabbat ke nisar Din mein chhaati se lagaate the mujhe sau sau baar Mujh pe ye zulm hain aaya unhen kis tarah qarar Munh dikhaate nahin shafqat se bulaana kaisa Khwab mein aaye na chhaati pe sulaana kaisa

"My ears were wounded, and he did not ask after me: such love!
He has forgotten me well; I would give my life for Father's love!
In the day he used to hold me to his breast a hundred times;
these cruelties are done to me: how can he be at peace?
He does not even show his face; what of calling me lovingly?
He has not come even in a dream; what of letting me sleep on his breast?"

Stanza 12

Rote the sun ke Sakina ka bayan saare aseer Har qadam par tha yahi shor ke hai hai Shabbir Is taraf hoti thi aaraish-e-darbar-e-shareer Takht par aap tha aur kursiyon par saare amir Ik taraf loot ka sab zewar-o-zar rakha tha Aur tale Fatima ke laal ka sar rakha tha

Hearing Sakina's words, all the captives were weeping;
at every step there was this cry: "Alas, alas, Shabbir!"
On this side the wicked man's court was being arrayed:
he himself sat on the throne, and all the nobles on chairs;
on one side all the plundered jewels and gold had been laid out,
and below lay the head of Fatima's son.

Stanza 13

Nazren haathon pe liye aate the sab darbari Parhte the tahniyat fath ko baari baari Jama darbar mein thi, shahr ki khalqat saari Yaan to tha jashn ka ghul, aur udhar thi zari Is taraf to daf-o-nay ki sada aati thi Aur us simt se hai hai ki sada aati thi

All the courtiers came bearing offerings in their hands;
one after another they recited congratulations on the victory;
all the people of the city were gathered in the court;
here there was the noise of celebration, there weeping;
from this side came the sound of tambourine and flute,
and from that side the cry of 'Alas, alas!'

Stanza 14

Dam ba dam takht se uth uth ke ye kehta tha shareer Qaidi kyun jald nahin aate hain kya hai takheer Barh ke karte the khabardar ye us dam taqreer Zoaf se paaon ko tham tham ke uthaate hain aseer Maare dahshat ke lahu un ka ghata jaata hai Har qadam ek zaeefa ko ghash aa jaata hai

Again and again the wicked man rose from his throne and said,
"Why do the prisoners not come quickly? What is the delay?"
Then the heralds would come forward and say,
"The captives are so weak that they lift their feet haltingly;
from terror their blood runs thin;
at every step one frail woman or another faints."

Stanza 15

Bola wo kaun si aurat hai wo mahboos-e-sitam Arz ki us ne ke hamsheer-e-shahanshah-e-umam Baap jis ka hai Ali pusht-o-panah-e-aalam Jis ki maan Fatima hai fakhr-e-janab-e-Maryam Hai jo sultan-e-Arab us ki nawaasi hai wo Kalima go jis ke hain sab us ki nawaasi hai wo

He said, "Which woman is that, that prisoner of cruelty?"
The man answered, "The sister of the King of the nations,
whose father is Ali, the support and refuge of the world,
whose mother is Fatima, the pride of Mary;
she is the granddaughter of the Sultan of Arabia;
she is the granddaughter of him whose creed everyone recites."

Stanza 16

"She is that wounded-hearted daughter-in-law of Jafar;
she is that Zainab who loved Shabbir so dearly;
it was she who fell from her camel again and again onto the King's body;
even after death the same love remains between brother and sister:
the whole caravan weeps morning and evening,
but when she weeps, Shabbir's head weeps."

Stanza 17

He said, "Then why do the others not come?"
The man answered, "They are all bound in one rope;
when the daughter of the King of Arabia falls to the ground,
a cry goes up among the captives, 'Alas, alas, Zainab!'
When she comes to and weeps for her brother,
the prisoners beat their breasts for a long while."

"Among these widows is a daughter of the Prophet's son,
used to sleeping on the breast of the darling of the Arabian Messenger;
the misery of hunger, fatherlessness and thirst;
every moment on her lips is the cry, 'Where is my father? Where is my father?'
She weeps with such pain that hearts break;
when Shimr glares at her, she falls silent."

Zikr ye tha ke wo qaidi sar-e-darbar aaye Sab pukaare ke wo hakim ke gunahgar aaye Aage rote hue Sajjad-e-dil afgar aaye Sar barahna haram-e-Ahmad-e-Mukhtar aaye Saaf khursheed si shaklen jo nazar aati hain Aankhen sab zalimon ki band hui jaati hain

While this was being said, the prisoners came before the court;
all cried out, "Here come the ruler's offenders!"
In front, weeping, came Sajjad, wounded at heart;
the women of Ahmad the Chosen came bareheaded.
When faces as bright as the sun come into view,
the eyes of all the tyrants close.

Go ke us roz thin sayyidaniyan khole hue baal Munh chhupaane ko kisi paas na tha ik rumal Betiyon ka Asadullah ki, Allah re jalal Aankh utha kar koi dekhe, ye kisi ki thi majal Jalwa-e-raushni-e-Toor nazar aata tha Kuchh na aankhon ko bajuz noor nazar aata tha

Though that day the Sayyid ladies had their hair unbound,
and none of them had so much as a kerchief to hide her face,
Allah, the majesty of the daughters of the Lion of God!
Who had the nerve to raise his eyes and look?
It was like the radiance of the light of Sinai;
the eyes could see nothing but light.

No glance could get beyond the veil of the eye;
one asked another, "Where are the prisoners?"
For Fatima Zahra's daughters were bareheaded,
and Haidar's hand was over the eyes of the onlookers;
since God willed a veil for the family of the cloak,
Fatima held up the veil of her own mantle.

The tyrant said, "Yes, bring the prisoners close."
Hearing this order, two or four heralds ran off;
the ladies were in a strange state from shame;
beating her head, Bano said, "Alas for our fate!"
When the tyrants dragged them all forward,
Lady Zainab and Kulsoom fell fainting.

the wicked man looked at Sayyid Sajjad and said,

the Panjtan are gone; your strength is no more."

Hearing this, the daughter of the King of men was filled with wrath;
trembling, she said, "What are you babbling, you ill-starred man?
The family of Muhammad is a family of honour and dignity;
never will our honour decline.
If you have thought us worthless, you are wrong;
look in the Holy Book and see whom God praises."

Zor apna kise Allah ne imdad kiya? Khana-e-kufr ko kis sher ne barbad kiya? Haq ne Quran ke soorat mein kise yaad kiya? Kis ko akmaltu lakum deenakum irshad kiya? Kis se har jang mein ajiz saf-e-kuffar aayi? Badr mein kis ke liye arsh se talwar aayi?

"To whom did Allah give His own strength as help?
Which lion laid waste the house of unbelief?
Whom did God remember in the suras of the Quran?
Concerning whom did He declare, 'I have perfected your religion for you'?
At whose hands were the ranks of the unbelievers defeated in every battle?
For whom did a sword come down from the Throne at Badr?"

"Do not look with contempt on the family of Ahmad, you wretch;
it is plain to all that we are the light of Allah.
Having killed the Prophet's grandson, such pride, such arrogance!
Well, we are not far off, nor are you, nor is the Day of Gathering.
When the river of God's wrath rises in flood,
the bonds on the hands of the Sayyids will be loosed."

Fakhr kyunkar na kare tu ke ye hai fakhr ki ja Tu ne Allah ke mahboob ka kaata hai gala Ho gaye surkh lahu mein Hasan-e-sabz qaba Fatima zibah hui, sher-e-Khuda qatl hua Aag di khema ko aur zewar-o-zar loot liya Jis ke darban the malak, tu ne wo ghar loot liya

"How should you not boast? This is indeed a cause for boasting!
You have cut the throat of Allah's beloved;
the green-robed Hasan has been reddened with blood;
Fatima has been slaughtered, the Lion of God killed.
You set fire to the tents and plundered the jewels and gold;
you have plundered the house whose doorkeepers were angels."

"Your own women sit behind veils, you worst of tyrants,
and we stand in your court with our hair dishevelled;
alas, the Lady of the Imam of the world is unveiled;
such cruelty to Sakina, such oppression to Kubra!
The bride of one night has come bareheaded as a prisoner;
for you there is celebration, and upon us ruin has fallen."

Kiye Zainab ne fasahat se ye jis waqt kalam Kaanpe seenon mein jigar rone lage log tamam Takht ke neeche dhara tha jo sar-e-pak-e-Imam Mutawajjeh hua sharma ke idhar hakim-e-Shaam Aur in zulm raseedon pe jafa karne laga Lab-e-farzand-e-Payambar pe chhari dharne laga

When Zainab had spoken these words so eloquently,
hearts trembled in their breasts, and all the people began to weep;
the pure head of the Imam lay below the throne;
abashed, the ruler of Syria turned toward it
and began to wrong those victims of cruelty further:
he began to lay his cane on the lips of the Prophet's son.

Prising open with a stick the lips of the King of Arabia,
he said, "These lips are finer than a piece of ruby;
these pearly teeth shine so that the stars are put to shame."
Beating her breast, Zainab cried, "O outrage!
You feel no shame before Muhammad or Haidar;
may your hand be cut off! What are you doing?"

Though they are not dear to you, they are dear to us;

O tyrant, what is the fault of a head without a body?
This cane, O outrage, and the pure lips of Shabbir!
Do not torment me; I am the daughter of the King who took Khaibar.
Now I lay this loosened hair upon my hands;
see, I make my complaint against you to Allah."

When, saying this, Ali's daughter grew angry,
the heavens were set in motion and the earth trembled;
suddenly a voice came from Shabbir's head:
"Restrain your anger, Zainab; your brother would give his life for you;
lest the wrath of God come surging up,
lest ruin fall upon the ark of the community."

"You know what sufferings Shabbir endured,
yet he never brought a word of complaint to his tongue;
he bowed his head when the killers came to slaughter him;
for the community's sake I took the spears upon my breast.
Do you fall to weeping over so small a thing?
Are you angry that a cane is laid upon my lips?"

"Is there more pain in this than in taking lances?
We stayed silent when sword upon sword fell on our body;
let it be: if he has laid a cane on my lips, let him;
sister, this hour of trial too will pass.
We are silent at whatever cruelty is done to us in God's way;
justice for it will be done in God's court."

When Shabbir's head had spoken these words to Zainab,
that heartless ruler began to tremble with rage;
he said to Shimr, "This is the only punishment for her:
take them all away and imprison them in a harsh ruin."
Enough, Anees; now heart and soul are burning;
the state of the prison cannot be put into words.
