Dasht-e-Wagha Mein Noor-e-Khuda Ka Zahoor Hai

by Mir Babar Ali Anees

About this marsiya

The light of Imam Husain (a) on the field of Karbala, and a story of his throat: the Prophet (s) kissed the lips of Hasan (a) but the throat of Husain (a), and foretold to Fatima (a) that Hasan (a) would be poisoned and Husain (a) killed thirsty. Fatima (a) accepts it for the sake of the community. The poem returns to Karbala, where the Imam falls, prays for his followers and is killed while Zainab (a) and Sakina (a) plead. Two misras missing from the source are marked as gaps.

Dasht-e-wagha mein noor-e-Khuda ka zahoor hai Zarron mein raushani-e-tajalli-e-Toor hai Ik aftab rukh ki ziya door door hai Koson zameen aks se darya-e-noor hai Allah re husn tabqa-e-ambar sarisht ka Maidan-e-Karbala hai namoona bahisht ka

In the wilderness of battle the light of God is revealed;
In every mote of dust shines the glory of Sinai;
The radiance of one whose face is a sun spreads far and wide;
For miles the ground is a river of light from its reflection.
Allah, the beauty of this stretch of ground, scented like ambergris!
The field of Karbala is a likeness of Paradise.

Hairan zameen ke noor se hai charkh-e-lajward Manind-e-kahruba hai rukh-e-aftab zard Hai rokash-e-faza-e-Iram wadi-e-nabard Uthta hai khaak se tutuq-e-noor ja-e-gard Hairat se hamilan-e-falak un ko takte hain Zarre nahin zameen pe sitaare chamakte hain

The azure sky is amazed at the light of the earth;
The face of the sun has turned pale as amber;
The valley of battle rivals the air of the garden of Iram;
Instead of dust, a canopy of light rises from the ground.
The bearers of the heavens gaze at them in wonder:
These are not motes upon the ground; they are stars shining.

Hai aab-e-nahr surat-e-aaina jalwa gar Taban hai misl-e-chashma-e-khursheed har bhanwar Lehren basan-e-barq chamakti hain sar ba sar Paani pe machhliyon ki thehrti nahin nazar Ye aab-o-taab hai ke guhar aab aab hain Darya to aasmaan hain sitaare habab hain

The water of the river gleams like a mirror;
Every eddy shines like a fountain of the sun;
The waves flash like lightning from end to end;
The fishes' eyes cannot rest upon the water.
Such is its lustre that pearls are put to shame;
The rivers are skies, and their bubbles are stars.

Partau figan hua jo rukh-e-qibla-e-anam Mashhoor ho gayi wo zameen arsh ehtisham Aur sang reze durr-e-Najaf ban gaye tamam Sehra ko mil gaya sharaf-e-Wadi-us-Salam Kaaba se aur Najaf se bhi izzat siwa hui Khaak is zameen-e-pak ki khaak-e-shifa hui

When the face of the Qibla of mankind cast its light there,
That ground became famous, glorious as the Throne;
All its pebbles became pearls of Najaf;
The desert gained the honour of the Valley of Peace.
Its honour rose above even the Kaaba and Najaf;
The dust of this pure ground became the dust of healing.

Phaila jo noor-e-mehr-e-imamat dam-e-zawal Zarron se waan ke aankh milana hua muhal Saare nihal faiz-e-qadam se hue nihal Akhtar bane jo phool to shaakhen banin hilal Patte tamam aaina-e-noor ho gaye Sehra ke nakhl sab shajar-e-Toor ho gaye

When the light of the sun of Imamate spread at the hour of decline,
No eye could meet the gaze of the motes of dust there;
Through the grace of his feet all the saplings flourished;
The flowers became stars, and the branches crescent moons;
All the leaves became mirrors of light;
All the palms of the desert became the tree of Sinai.

There was a cry: "Hail the majesty of Husain! Hail his dignity!
It is as if the Beloved of the Creator stands ready for battle;
In his face shows the awe of the King of Zulfiqar;
The light of God shines out from his radiant brow.
How could the full moon not hide behind a veil?
The fourteen spheres are lit by this sun."

Ye roo-e-raushan aur ye gesu-e-mushk faam Yaan shaam mein to subh hai aur subh mein hai shaam Haale mein yun nazar nahin aata hai mah-e-tamam Qudrat Khuda ki noor ka zulmat mein hai maqam Zulfon mein jalwa gar nahin chehra janab ka Hai nisf-e-shab mein aaj zahoor aftab ka

This shining face, and these musk-dark tresses!
Here there is morning in the evening, and evening in the morning;
Even the full moon does not look so within its halo;
Such is God's power: light has its dwelling in darkness.
It is not his honour's face shining among those locks:
Today the sun has risen at midnight.

Heart and soul be sacrificed to the bow of the Master's brows;
To call them the new moon is a worn-out comparison;
The eye of the gazelle of the plain of Khutan is put to shame by his eyes;
Whomever he looked upon with kindness had his sins forgiven.
The pupil is restless like the needle of a Qibla compass;
Those eyes weep, and this is the turning of night and day.

His cheeks surpass the moon in radiance,
Cheeks on which even the sun's gaze could never rest;
That dyed beard and this face of the King of sea and land
Make plain the meaning of 'By the night and the moon';
The Quran makes clear the greatness of the Imam;
God swore by this very morning and evening.

How can one describe those life-giving lips
That sucked the tongue of Ahmad, the Chosen?
What lustrous pearls lie hidden in this casket!
This mouth is like a treasury of pearls.
All the motes upon the ground shone with their reflection;
When these lips opened, the stars shone.

The King's throat was the candle of the sanctuary of the Eternal,
Like moonlight shining out in a dark night;
O heavens without a steady course, what cruelty is this, alas!
Shimr's sword, and the place that Muhammad kissed!
That throat on which the Messenger pressed his lips with love
Is cut at Karbala by the edge of a dagger!

Manzoor yaan thi madh-e-gulu-e-shah-e-umam Yaad aa gayi magar ye hadees-e-gham-o-alam Masjid mein jalwa gar the rasool-e-falak hasham Milte the zikr-e-Haq mein lab-e-pak dam ba dam Raushan the baam-o-dar rukh-e-raushan ke noor se Aaina ban gayi thi zameen tan ke noor se

My purpose here was to praise the throat of the King of the nations,
But this tale of grief and sorrow came to mind:
The Messenger, glorious as the heavens, sat resplendent in the mosque;
His pure lips moved ceaselessly in the remembrance of God;
Roof and door were bright with the light of his shining face;
The floor had become a mirror from the light of his body.

The pillar that was the support of the pillar of Prophethood:
Even the Kursi sought shelter at its back;
The mat on which that King of both worlds sat:
The Throne gazed upon that floor with longing.
The ground stood twice as high as highest Paradise;
The steps of the pulpit rose higher than the nine heavens.

His chosen companions were all around him like stars;
In their midst shone that moon whose title is Hashimi;
Over his head two angel-like Arabs waved the fly-whisks;
Gabriel sat with his knees folded in reverence.
His servants were Bilal and Qambar, of heaven-high station:
One kept his sandals, the other his staff.

Those locks explained 'By the night when it grows still';
His face made plain the meaning of 'By the sun and the morning light';
That pure beard and the face of the chief of the prophets:
It was as if the Quran lay open on its stand.
When that refuge of the world wore his black cloak,
Pilgrims plainly took him for the Kaaba.

Beside the King sat his minister in splendour:
Ali the Wali, chief of the faith and commander of creation;
In both worlds there was no equal to either of them;
If Ahmad was the sun, Haidar was the shining moon.
Outwardly one light appeared in two places;
Look closely, and it was the very same light.

The Sultan of the two Easts was busy preaching and counselling,
When Zahra's darlings came out of the house, playing;
Without their grandfather the two grandsons had no peace;
Now Hasan would run ahead, now Husain.
They said, "Let us see who is quicker on his feet,
Who gets to Grandfather first!"

Those fair, fair faces with locks falling this way and that,
The pearls in their ears shining like stars,
Their collars the envy of the crescent, their necks the envy of the moon;
[A line is missing in the source.]
On their amulets were engraved the names of God the Glorious;
Gabriel's feathers hung as charms around their necks.

When those rose-bodied boys came laughing into the mosque,
Their fragrance turned the courtyard of the great mosque into a garden;
Hasan bowed in greeting before Husain;
The Chief of the age smiled with joy.
Young and old came forward and bowed in salutation;
The Messenger stayed seated, but the angels rose to their feet.

Beton ko tha Ali ka ishara ke baith jaao Lazim nahin ke waz mein naana ko tum sataao Phaila ke haath bole Muhammad ke aao aao Shabbir ne kaha hamen pehle gale lagaao Bhai Hasan jo aap ki godi mein aayen ge Hum tum se naana jaan abhi rooth jaayen ge

Ali signalled to his sons, "Sit down;
You must not trouble your grandfather while he preaches."
Opening his arms, Muhammad said, "Come, come!"
Shabbir said, "Hug me first!
If brother Hasan gets into your lap first,
I shall be cross with you this very minute, dear Grandfather!"

Hasan said, "Well! And he will not love me?
The renowned emperor has already given his word."
With tearful eyes Husain, of heavenly dignity, said,
"Let us see who rides on his shoulder now!
It is I he loves above everyone else;
Do not you go ahead, for he is my grandfather!"

Stanza 22

Then Hasan said kindly to his brother,
"You are cross with me for no reason, you good-natured boy;
Is the Sultan of the universe not my grandfather too?
Even the smallest thing upsets you;
Someone of sweet temper should not be so angry;
You threw a tantrum just like this over the fawn."

Stanza 23

Hearing this, the Messenger began to look at Ali's face;
Smiling, he said, "These two are the flowers of my garden;
I want neither of them to be hurt;
If they cry, Batool will come out of the house.
Let no darling of my eyes be grieved;
You take Hasan into your lap, and I will take Husain."

Then, deeply moved, he signalled to Shabbar,
"Don't be angry; I will love you first."
Then, looking towards the renowned Shabbir, he said,
"Come, Husain, come; I would give my life for your words;
I will hold you to my breast as my very life;
Let us see who comes and hugs me first!"

Hearing this, the two sweet-natured boys ran side by side;
The two moons of the sun of Prophethood came near;
Laughing, Husain clung on this side and Hasan on that;
Their feet were on his knees, their heads above his shoulders.
In their grandfather's love the two were together;
Round his neck was an arm of this one and an arm of that.

Stanza 26

The emperor of the two Easts kept turning to look,
Now towards Hasan, now towards Husain;
When Zahra's darlings sat upon his knees,
His body had delight, his heart comfort, his soul peace.
The Messenger of the age bent again and again to kiss them;
He kissed this one's throat and that one's mouth.

Shabbir wanted his lips to be kissed too,
But he could not understand why his throat was kissed;
Whenever he brought his face close to his grandfather's,
The Lord of Arabia would bend and kiss his throat.
When Hasan smiled, looking at his brother,
His eyes would fill with tears of wounded pride.

Husain got up from Ahmad's knee in a temper,
His face pale with anger, his sleeve to his eyes,
Sweat on his face, a trembling in his body, a frown on his brow;
Asked where he was going, he said, "Nowhere."
Frowning, he went home all alone;
He did not look back, but went with his head bowed.

When the renowned Shabbir came into the House of Honour,
He put his shirt to his face and began to weep bitterly;
Fatima Zahra ran to him, heartbroken, saying,
"Alas, Husain, what has happened? Why are you in tears?
Whoever made you cry has plunged me into grief;
May I be your ransom! Who has upset you?"

Enough, enough, Husain, do not cry; for God's sake, do not cry.
Just look at me, how restless I am;
There, I cover my face with my wrap and weep too."

Your fair, fair cheeks are wet with tears;
Don't rub your eyes red with the back of your hand;
Come, let me untangle the knots in your hair.
You left home together and have come back apart;
I see: you have come back cross with Hasan."

Enough of such games! Why should he make my child cry?
Don't speak to him, however much he tries to make it up;
There, come, let it go; let me hold you to my breast.
My darling, if Hasan made you cry, he did wrong;
Shall I not ask what my darling has done?"

Grandfather kissed my brother's lips, but only my throat;
Mother dear, just smell my mouth;
Is there some unpleasant smell in my mouth?
He presses his lips to my brother's lips;
I won't go any more; Grandfather makes me cry."

"It smells of roses, my rose-cheeked one;
If he kissed your throat, do not be cross, my darling;
The Beloved of the Creator used to give you his tongue to suck;
No musk has this fragrance, nor any jasmine flower;
The fragrance of his very mouth is in your mouth."

"What do you know? He loves me less than Hasan;

Now I know: I am not dear to him.
Today I will cry and cry until I lose my life;
I will not drink water now, nor eat any food."

How will your mother live if you do not eat?"

She put on her stockings and took Shabbir in her arms;
When Mustafa's darling went from the house to the door,
Fizza went ahead and called to Abuzar and Salman,
"She is bringing Husain in her arms to the Prophet;
Make way, all of you, for Fatima is coming into the mosque!"

In the house of God the Panjtan were together in one place.

Husain lay bent on his mother's shoulder with his head bowed:
A crescent moon was shining at the side of the sun.
His mother kept saying, "Don't cry," but he would not be quiet;
His eyes were shut, and he wept, sobbing and sobbing.

They come here laughing and go home crying;
You yourself love them, and you yourself make them cry."

But then my community will not be saved.
God's Beloved would give himself for your darling,
But this matter rests upon Husain's being killed."

Allah, the patience of the daughter of the Creator's Beloved!
Hearing the word 'community', she bowed her head at once;
Content, the King of Zulfiqar said,
"Let Hasan and Husain be sacrificed; let Ali be the ransom;
In this path neither wealth nor riches are dear;
Not our dear sons: the community is dear to us."

The Messenger's robe was soaked through with blood;
Swords fell upon the shoulder of Ali's son;
The points of spears came out through his breast.

With stains of blood his garments became a bed of tulips;
His most holy breast was pierced through like the lattice of a shrine.

He thought that, for the torments his thirst had brought him,
Shabbir was cursing him at that moment.

Enough, Anees: the gathering is full of wailing and lament;
Ask the hearts of those who understand verse and grasp its subtleties:
It is true, they have never heard so fine a narration;
It is as if this were wholly the language of Khaleeq.
It is true that no one knows this language;
And whoever does know it accepts no other.
