Stanza 1
Zahir wahi ulfat ke asar hain ab tak
Qurbaan shah-e-jinn-o-bashar hain ab tak
Hote hain alam aage jab uthti hai zarih
Abbas Ali seena sipar hain ab tak
The marks of that love are still to be seen;
they still give themselves for the King of jinn and men:
when the shrine is lifted, the standards go before it;
Abbas, son of Ali, still makes his breast a shield.
Stanza 2
Uryan sar-e-khatoon-e-zaman hai ab tak
Namoos pe iza-o-mihan hai ab tak
Chehlum ke hain din khaak urao yaaro
Shabbir ki laash be kafan hai ab tak
The head of the Lady of the age is still uncovered;
torment and affliction still fall on the honour of the women.
These are the days of the fortieth: throw dust on your heads, friends;
Shabbir's body still lies without a shroud.
Stanza 3
Ulfat ho jise use wali kehte hain
Aison ko saeed-e-azali kehte hain
Is bazm mein dhoop utha ke aate hain jo log
Hans kar Tooba lakum Ali kehte hain
One who has love is called a friend of God;
such people are called blessed from eternity.
To those who come to this assembly through the heat of the sun
Ali says with a smile, "Blessed are you!"
Stanza 4
Thokar bhi na maaren ge agar khud sar hai
Zardar ko bhi farotani behtar hai
Hai mewa-e-nakhl-e-qad-e-insan taslim
Jhukti hai wahi shaakh jo baar awar hai
If a man is arrogant, no one will so much as kick him aside;
humility becomes even the rich.
Submission is the fruit of the palm tree of man's stature:
only the branch that bears fruit bends low.
Stanza 5
The zeest se apni haath dhoye Sajjad
Sajjad had washed his hands of his own life;
Sajjad never slept in peace at night;
as long as he lived, no one saw him laugh;
for forty years Sajjad wept for his father.
Stanza 6
Soz-e-gham-e-doori ne jala rakha hai
Aahon ne kanwal dil ka bujha rakha hai
Niklo kahin jald umr aakhir hai Anees
Is Hind-e-siyah bakht mein kya rakha hai
The burning grief of separation keeps me aflame;
sighs have put out the lamp of my heart.
Get away somewhere soon, Anees, for life is near its end:
what is there in this ill-starred India?
Stanza 7
Shabbir ka gham ye jis ke dil par hoga
Aansoo jo gire ga shakl-e-gauhar hoga
Poochhe ga Khuda jab aise durr ki qeemat
Tab hashr mein jauhari Payambar hoga
Whoever carries this grief for Shabbir in his heart,
every tear he sheds will be like a pearl;
when God asks the worth of such a pearl,
then, at the Resurrection, the jeweller will be the Prophet.
Stanza 8
Sar khench na shamsheer-e-kashida ki tarah
Har ek se jhuk qaus-e-khamida ki tarah
Manzoor-e-nazar hai jo hifazat apni
Ho gosha nasheen mardum-e-deeda ki tarah
Do not raise your head like a drawn sword;
bow before everyone like a bent bow;
if you have your own safety in view,
keep to a corner, like the pupil of the eye.
Stanza 9
Rutba jise duniya mein Khuda deta hai
Wo dil mein farotani ko ja deta hai
Karte hain tahi maghz sana aap apni
Jo zarf ke khaali hai sada deta hai
Whoever is given rank in the world by God
makes room for humility in his heart;
the empty-headed praise themselves:
it is the empty vessel that makes the noise.
Stanza 10
Raahi taraf-e-aalam-e-bala hoon main
Duniya se adam ko jaane wala hoon main
Ya Rab tera naam-e-pak japne ke liye
Goya ik haddiyon ki maala hoon main
I am a traveller bound for the world on high;
I am about to leave this world for non-existence.
O Lord, for telling Your holy name
it is as if I were a rosary of bones.
Stanza 11
Qatre hain ye sab jis ke wo darya hai Ali
Pinhan hai kabhi to gaah paida hai Ali
Hota hai guman Khuda ka jis par har baar
Allah Allah aisa banda hai Ali
All these are drops of the river that is Ali;
now Ali is hidden, now he is revealed;
he is one whom men mistake for God again and again:
Allah, Allah! Such a servant is Ali.
Stanza 12
Aankhen jise dhoondhti hain wo noor hai tu
Qurbat rag-e-jaan se aur phir is par ye bud
Allah Allah kis qadar door hai tu
Like the pupil of the eye, You are hidden from sight;
You are the light the eyes search for;
nearer than the vein of life, and yet such distance:
Allah, Allah! How far away You are!
Stanza 13
Mai khana-e-Kausar ka sharabi hoon main
Kya qabr ka khauf Bu-Turabi hoon main
Kehti hai ye chashm khush rakho na mujhe
Ae ahl-e-nazar mardum-e-abi hoon main
I am a drinker from the tavern of Kausar;
why should I fear the grave? I belong to Abu Turab.
This eye says, "Do not try to keep me cheerful;
O people of vision, I am a creature of the water."
Stanza 14
La raib bahishtiyon ka marja hai ye
Sab jis mein bhare hain gul wo majma hai ye
Dekhe koi mominon ke chehron ki ziya
Mani bhi hai dang wo muraqqa hai ye
Without doubt this is the gathering place of the people of paradise;
this is the assembly that is filled with flowers;
let anyone look at the radiance of the believers' faces:
this is an album that leaves even Mani astonished.
Stanza 15
Kyun kar dil-e-ghamzada na faryad kare
Jab mulk ko charkh-e-peer barbad kare
Maango ye dua ke phir Khudawand-e-Kareem
Ujri hui mamlakat ko aabad kare
How should the grieving heart not cry out
when the old wheel of heaven lays a kingdom waste?
Pray that God the Generous may once again
bring the ruined kingdom back to life.
Stanza 16
Kya dast-e-mizha ko haath aai tasbeeh
Subhan Allah kya banaai tasbeeh
Aansoo nahin rukte hain gham-e-shah mein Anees
Aankhon se lagi hai Karbalai tasbeeh
What a rosary the hand of the eyelashes has found!
Glory be to Allah, what a rosary it has made!
In grief for the King, Anees, the tears do not stop:
a rosary of Karbala is pressed to the eyes.
Stanza 17
Aaye jo yahan to bas hua ye sabit
In the land of non-existence there was no trace of sorrow;
we did not know what our end would be.
When we came here, this alone was proved:
we had come only to meet death; there was nothing else to do.
Stanza 18
Kyun sahibo ho chuka Muharram afsos
How should the whole world not grieve?
Alas, we did not mourn the King to our heart's content;
how quickly these ten days of grief have passed!
Is it not so, friends? Muharram is over, alas.
Stanza 19
Kho dil ke maraz ko ae tabib-e-ummat
Sikhla adab ae adeeb-e-ummat
Allah ke noor ko baainihi dekhen
Gar ho tera deedar naseeb-e-ummat
Cure the sickness of the heart, O physician of the community;
teach good manners, O teacher of the community;
the community would see the very light of Allah
if it were granted the sight of you.
Stanza 20
Khenche mujhe maut zindagani ki taraf
Gham khud le jaaye shadmani ki taraf
Tera jo karam ho to misal-e-mah-e-nau
Peeri se pahunch jaaun jawani ki taraf
Let death draw me toward life;
let grief itself lead me toward joy;
if You are gracious, then, like the new moon,
I shall pass from old age to youth.
Stanza 21
Jo martaba Ahmad ke wasi ka dekha
Hum ne nahin rutba ye kisi ka dekha
Kehte hain Nabi jab hui Meraj mujhe
Pahuncha jo wahan haath Ali ka dekha
The rank we have seen in Ahmad's Executor
we have seen in no one else.
The Prophet says, "When I was taken up on the Ascension,
on arriving there, I saw the hand of Ali."
Stanza 22
Jo chashm gham-e-shah mein sada roti hai
Har lamha fuzoon us mein ziya hoti hai
Ashk-e-gham-e-Shabbir ka rutba dekho
Yaan ashk ka qatra hai wahan moti hai
The eye that weeps for ever in grief for the King
grows brighter every moment;
see the rank of a tear shed in grief for Shabbir:
here it is a drop of a tear; there it is a pearl.
Stanza 23
Jis par ke nazar lutf ki Shabbir karen
Adna aala sab us ki tauqeer karen
Jis sang ko chaahen wo bana den paaras
Jis khaak ko chaahen abhi akseer karen
On whomever Shabbir turns a kindly look,
high and low alike will honour him;
whatever stone he wishes he can turn into the philosopher's stone;
whatever dust he wishes he can make the elixir at once.
Stanza 24
Itna na ghuroor kar ke marna hai tujhe
Aaraam abhi qabr mein karna hai tujhe
Rakh khaak pe soch kar zara paaon Anees
Ik roz Sirat se guzarna hai tujhe
Do not be so proud, for you must die;
you have yet to take your rest in the grave.
Think a little, Anees, before you set foot on the dust:
one day you must cross the Bridge.
Stanza 25
Isyan se hoon sharmsar tauba Ya Rab
Karta hoon main baar baar tauba Ya Rab
Ik tauba to kya hazar tauba Ya Rab
I am ashamed of my sins: I repent, O Lord;
again and again I repent, O Lord;
there is no end to my crimes, no counting my sins:
not one repentance but a thousand, O Lord!
Stanza 26
As long as you are alert and aware of everything,
as long as you are awake and your eye is on the world,
the scratching of the pen gives out this cry:
"Think of poetry while your tongue is still moist."
Stanza 27
Ho jaati hai sahl pesh-e-dana mushkil
Madh-e-shah-e-deen mein hai magar dil ka ye qaul
Hai bahr ka kooze mein samaana mushkil
Before the wise, the difficult becomes easy;
my heart has found nothing hard;
but in praising the King of the faith, my heart says this:
"It is hard to fit the ocean into a jug."
Stanza 28
Har chand ke khasta-o-hazeen hai aawaz
Par taziya dar-e-shah-e-deen hai aawaz
Nikle na agar kunj-e-dahan se to baja
Matam ke hain din sog nasheen hai aawaz
Although my voice is weak and sorrowful,
my voice is a mourner of the King of the faith;
if it does not come out of the corner of my mouth, that is fitting:
these are days of mourning, and my voice sits in grief.
Stanza 29
Har ghunche se shaakh-e-gul hai kyun nazr ba kaf
Hai roz-e-khilafat-e-shahanshah-e-Najaf
Haidar hue janasheen-e-khas-e-nabawi
Hai aaj tulu-e-nayyir-e-burj-e-sharaf
Why does the rose branch hold out every bud as an offering?
It is the day of the caliphate of the King of Najaf;
Haidar has become the Prophet's own successor;
today the sun rises in its house of exaltation.
Stanza 30
Gulzar-e-jahan se baagh-e-jannat mein gaye
Marhoom hue jawar-e-rahmat mein gaye
Maddah-e-Ali ka martaba aala hai
Ghalib Asadullah ki khidmat mein gaye
From the rose garden of the world he has gone to the garden of paradise;
he has passed away into the neighbourhood of mercy.
High is the rank of one who praises Ali:
Ghalib has gone to serve the Lion of God.
Stanza 31
Gulshan mein saba ko justuju teri hai
Bulbul ki zaban pe guftugu teri hai
Har rang mein jalwa hai teri qudrat ka
Jis phool ko soonghta hoon boo teri hai
In the garden the breeze is searching for You;
on the nightingale's tongue is talk of You;
in every colour is the splendour of Your power;
whatever flower I smell, the scent is Yours.
Stanza 32
Gulshan mein phiroon ke sair-e-sahra dekhoon
Ya maadan-o-koh-o-dasht-o-darya dekhoon
Har ja teri qudrat ke hain laakhon jalwe
Hairan hoon do aankhon se kya kya dekhoon
Shall I wander in the garden, or look upon the desert?
Or shall I look at mines and mountains, plains and rivers?
Everywhere are countless manifestations of Your power;
I am bewildered: how much can I see with two eyes?
Stanza 33
Ghaflat mein na kho umr ke pachhtaaye ga
Rona hi gham-e-shah mein kaam aaye ga
Asbab-e-taalluq se na bhar dil apna
Chalte hue sab kuchh yahin reh jaaye ga
Do not waste your life in heedlessness, or you will regret it;
only weeping in grief for the King will be of use.
Do not fill your heart with worldly attachments:
when you go, everything will stay behind here.
Stanza 34
Fursat koi saat na zamane se mili
Begaane se raahat na yagaane se mili
Haqqa ke palak nawaz hai zaat teri
Jannat unhen ashkon ke bahaane se mili
Time never gave me a moment's leisure;
I found comfort neither from strangers nor from my own.
Truly, Your Being is kind to the eyelash:
paradise was granted for the sake of those tears.
Stanza 35
Farmaate the ro ke laash-e-Qasim pe Husain
Aulad se kam nahin hai damad ka daagh
May God not give even an enemy the wound of losing a child;
the scar on a grieving heart never goes.
Weeping over the body of Qasim, Husain said,
"The loss of a son-in-law is no less than the loss of a child."
Stanza 36
Duniya bhi ajab sara-e-fani dekhi
Har cheez yahan ki aani jaani dekhi
Jo aa ke na jaaye wo burhapa dekha
Jo ja ke na aaye wo jawani dekhi
I have found the world a strange inn that passes away;
I have seen that everything here comes and goes:
what comes and never leaves is old age;
what leaves and never comes back is youth.
Stanza 37
Dukh mein har shab karaahta hoon Ya Rab
Ab zeest ke din nibaahta hoon Ya Rab
Talib zar-o-maal ke hain sab duniya mein
Main tujh se tujhi ko chaahta hoon Ya Rab
Every night I groan in pain, O Lord;
now I am merely getting through the days of my life, O Lord;
in this world all seek gold and wealth;
from You I ask for You alone, O Lord.
Stanza 38
Dil ne gham-e-be hisab kya kya dekha
Aankhon se jahan mein khwab kya kya dekha
Tifli-o-shabab-o-aish-o-ranj-o-raahat
Is umr ne inqilab kya kya dekha
What countless griefs my heart has seen!
What dreams my eyes have seen in this world!
Childhood and youth, pleasure, sorrow and ease:
what changes this life of mine has seen!
Stanza 39
Damad-e-Rasool ki shahadat hai aaj
Masoomon pe Fatima ke aafat hai aaj
Jannat mein tarapte hain Rasool-us-Saqalain
Khatoon-e-qayamat pe qayamat hai aaj
Today is the martyrdom of the Messenger's son-in-law;
calamity has fallen today on Fatima's innocent children;
in paradise the Messenger to men and jinn is writhing in pain;
today doom has fallen on the Lady of the Resurrection.
Stanza 40
Be ja nahin madh-e-shah mein ghurra mera
Bharti se kalam hai muarra mera
Murghan-e-khush ilhan-e-chaman bolen kya
Mar jaate hain sun ke roz marra mera
My pride in praising the King is not misplaced;
my verse is free of padding;
what can the sweet-voiced birds of the garden say?
They die when they hear my idiom.
Stanza 41
Be gor-o-kafan baap ka laasha dekha
Pardes mein madar ka randapa dekha
Zindan mein jafa-e-khaar-o-tauq-o-zanjeer
Abid ne pidar ke baad kya kya dekha
He saw his father's body without grave or shroud;
in a strange land he saw his mother widowed;
in prison, the cruelty of thorns, the iron collar and the chain:
what Abid saw after his father!
Stanza 42
Be deenon ko Murtaza ne iman bakhsha
Deen daaron ko jannat ka gulistan bakhsha
Bakhshish ka hai khatima ke khatam de kar
Darvesh ko rutba-e-Sulaiman bakhsha
Murtaza gave faith to the faithless;
to the faithful he gave the garden of paradise;
this is the height of giving: by giving his ring
he gave a beggar the rank of Solomon.
Stanza 43
Barham hai jahan ajab talatum hai aaj
Sab rote hain duniya mein khushi gum hai aaj
Chaliswen tak gara na laasha jis ka
Us bekas-o-mazloom ka chehlum hai aaj
The world is in turmoil; there is a strange upheaval today;
all the world is weeping; joy is lost today.
The one whose body was not buried even by the fortieth day:
today is the fortieth of that forsaken, wronged one.
Stanza 44
The dust of age now shows on my hair;
be alert, Anees: you are a traveller now;
the white light of the dawn of old age has appeared;
come, wake from sleep: the night is ending now.
Stanza 45
Ashkon mein nahao to jigar thande hon
Bheege jo mizha deeda-e-tar thande hon
Yun seena-o-qalb sard ho jaayen ge
Khas khane mein jaise baam-o-dar thande hon
Bathe in tears, and your hearts will be cooled;
when the lashes are wet, the moist eyes are cooled;
so the breast and the heart will grow cool,
as roof and door are cooled in a room screened with khas grass.
Stanza 46
Ashab ne poochha jo Nabi ko dekha
Meraj mein Hazrat ne kisi ko dekha
Kehne lage muskura ke mahboob-e-Khuda
Wallah jahan dekha Ali ko dekha
When the Companions saw the Prophet, they asked,
"Did the revered one see anyone on the Ascension?"
The beloved of God smiled and said,
"By Allah, wherever I looked, I saw Ali."
Stanza 47
Anjam pe apne aah-o-zaari kar tu
Sakhti bhi jo ho to burdbari kar tu
Behtar hai yahi ke khaak saari kar tu
Lament and weep over your own end;
even if hardship comes, be patient.
God made you from dust:
it is best that you be humble as the dust.
Stanza 48
Andaz-e-sukhan tum jo hamaare samjho
Jo lutf-e-kalam hain wo saare samjho
Aawaz girifta go hai is zakir ki
Pahron roo agar ishaare samjho
If you understand my manner of speech,
if you grasp all the delights of my words,
then, though the voice of this reciter is hoarse,
you will weep for hours, if you understand the hints.
Stanza 49
Allah Allah izz-o-jaah-e-zakir
Darbar-e-Husaini mein hai raah-e-zakir
Panja jo alam ka sar-e-minbar hai Anees
Hai dast-e-alamdar panah-e-zakir
Allah, Allah! The honour and rank of the reciter!
The reciter has a way into Husain's court;
Anees, the hand-shaped crest of the standard above the pulpit
is the hand of the standard-bearer, the reciter's refuge.
Stanza 50
Akhtar se bhi aabroo mein behtar hai ye ashk
Allah hai mushtari wo gauhar hain ye ashk
Gauhar nahin noor-e-chashm-e-Kausar hain ye ashk
These tears are finer in lustre than the stars;
Allah is their buyer: such pearls are these tears.
The angels press them to their eyes and say,
"These tears are not pearls: they are the light of the eye of Kausar."
Stanza 51
Akbar ne jo ghar maut ka aabad kiya
Sughra ko dam-e-naza bahut yaad kiya
Laashe pe kamar pakar ke kehte the Husain
Tum ne Ali Akbar hamen barbad kiya
When Akbar went to dwell in the house of death,
at his last breath he remembered Sughra often;
over his body, holding his back, Husain said,
"Ali Akbar, you have ruined me."
Stanza 52
Ae shah ke gham mein jaan khone waalo
Ae Ibn-e-Ali ke sadqe hone waalo
Is ajr-e-azeem ko na do haathon se
Ab do hi shaben aur hain rone waalo
O you who give your lives in grief for the King,
O you who would give yourselves for the son of Ali,
do not let this great reward slip from your hands:
only two more nights remain, you who weep.
Stanza 53
Ae momino Fatima ka pyaara Shabbir
Kal jaaye ga bhooka pyaasa maara Shabbir
Ho jaayen ge sab taziya khane sunsan
Aaj aur hai mehmaan tumhaara Shabbir
O believers, Fatima's beloved Shabbir!
Tomorrow Shabbir will be slain, hungry and thirsty;
all the houses of mourning will be deserted;
for today only, Shabbir is still your guest.
Stanza 54
Ae Khaliq-e-zulfazl-o-karam rahmat kar
Ae dafe-e-har ranj-o-alam rahmat kar
Sabqat hai sada ghazab pe rahmat ko teri
Apni tujhe rahmat ki qasam rahmat kar
O Creator, possessor of bounty and grace, have mercy;
O remover of every grief and pain, have mercy;
Your mercy always outstrips Your wrath:
I adjure You by Your own mercy, have mercy.
Stanza 55
Ae bakht-e-rasa soo-e-Najaf raahi kar
Mujh zaar ko zair-e-Yadullahi kar
Le ja soo-e-Karbala meri musht-e-ghubar
Ae bad-e-saba itni hawa khwahi kar
O kindly fortune, set me on the road to Najaf;
make this wretch a pilgrim to the Hand of God;
carry my handful of dust toward Karbala:
O morning breeze, do me this much kindness.
Stanza 56
Ahbab se ummeed hai be ja mujh ko
Ummeed-e-ata-e-Haq hai zeba mujh ko
Kya un se tawaqqo ke miyan-e-marqad
Chhor aayen ge ik roz ye tanha mujh ko
It is wrong for me to put my hope in friends;
it befits me to hope for the gift of God.
What can I expect of those who, one day,
will leave me alone in the grave?
Stanza 57
Afzoon hain bayan se mojizat-e-Haidar
Hallal-e-muhimmat hai zaat-e-Haidar
Taurait Injeel aur Zuboor-o-Quran
Hain ek rubai sifat-e-Haidar
The miracles of Haidar are beyond telling;
Haidar's own self is the solver of every hard affair;
the Torah, the Gospel, the Psalms and the Quran
are a single quatrain on the qualities of Haidar.
Stanza 58
Afzal koi Murtaza se himmat mein nahin
Is tarah ka banda to haqeeqat mein nahin
Tooba Tasneem-o-khuld-o-seb-o-rumman
Wo kya hai jo Haidar ki wilayat mein nahin
No one surpasses Murtaza in courage;
in truth there is no other servant like him.
Tooba and Tasneem, paradise, apples and pomegranates:
what is there that is not within Haidar's domain?
Stanza 59
Ab zer-e-qadam lahad ka bab aa pahuncha
Hushyar ho jald waqt-e-khwab aa pahuncha
Peeri ki bhi dopahar dhali aah Anees
Hangam-e-ghuroob-e-aftab aa pahuncha
Now the door of the grave has come right under my feet;
be alert, quickly: the time of sleep has come.
Even the noon of old age has declined, alas, Anees;
the hour of sunset has arrived.
Stanza 60
Ab waqt-e-suroor-o-farhat andozi hai
Har dil masroof-e-jashn-e-nau rozi hai
Hai aaj se daur-e-shahi-e-shah-e-Najaf
Ye rang-e-bahar-e-fath-o-feerozi hai
Now is the time for joy and gathering delight;
every heart is busy with the Nowruz festival;
from today begins the reign of the King of Najaf:
this is the colour of the spring of victory and triumph.
Stanza 61
Ab khwab se chaunk waqt-e-bedari hai
Le zad-e-safar kooch ki taiyari hai
Mar mar ke pahunchte hain musafir waan tak
Ye qabr ki manzil bhi ghazab ki bhaari hai
Wake from sleep now: it is time to be awake;
take provisions for the journey: the departure is being made ready.
Travellers reach that place only by dying again and again;
this stage of the grave is terribly hard.
Stanza 62
Taufeeq rafeeq ho to chalta hoon main
Taqdeer ne beriyan to kaati hain Anees
Kyun ruk gaye paaon haath malta hoon main
Now I am leaving the darkness of India;
if grace goes with me, I shall set out.
Fate has cut my fetters, Anees:
why have my feet stopped? I wring my hands.
Stanza 63
Ab garm khabar maut ke aane ki hai
Ghafil tujhe fikr aab-o-daane ki hai
Hasti ke liye zaroor ik din hai fana
Aana tera dalil jaane ki hai
Now the news of death's coming is everywhere;
heedless one, you think only of food and drink.
For every existence there is surely a day of passing away;
your coming is proof of your going.
Stanza 64
Aankh abr-e-bahari se lari rehti hai
Ashkon ki rida munh pe pari rehti hai
Donon aankhen hain meri Saawan Bhaadon
Yaan saare baras ek jhari rehti hai
My eyes vie with the clouds of spring;
a veil of tears always lies over my face;
both my eyes are the rainy months of Saawan and Bhaadon:
here a single downpour lasts all year round.
Stanza 65
Aala rutbe mein har bashar se paaya
Afzal unhen Khizr-e-raah bar se paaya
Ye dar jo na milta to bhatakte phirte
Jannat ka pata Ali ke ghar se paaya
I found them higher in rank than every human being;
I found them more excellent than Khizr the guide.
Had I not found this door, I would have wandered lost:
I found the way to paradise from the house of Ali.
Stanza 66
Allah ri latafat-e-tan-e-pak-e-Rasool
Dhoonda kiya aftab saaya na mila
Adam was not given this gift, this present;
no human being was given such a rank.
Allah! The fineness of the Messenger's pure body:
the sun searched and searched, and found no shadow.
