Rubaiyat-e-Dabeer

by Mirza Salamat Ali Dabeer

About this rubaiyat

Nineteen quatrains by Mirza Dabeer, each standing on its own. Several call on Imam Ali (a), the King of Najaf, to protect the mourners; others mourn Sughra (a), praise the shrine of Abbas (a), set Hurr's reward against the enemy's plunder, and pray for tears.

The rubaiyat

Stanza 1

Ya shah-e-Najaf thaam lo is kishwar ko Aabad rakho ahl-e-aza ke ghar ko Yun khod do mukhalif ke amal ki buniyad Jis tarah ukhara hai dar-e-Khaibar ko

O King of Najaf, hold up this land;
keep the homes of the mourners flourishing;
dig out the foundation of the enemy's deeds
as you tore out the gate of Khaibar.

Stanza 2

Sughra's illness was not eased by any cure;
at last the fever of separation laid her low;
in place of a cooling draught she drank the poison of death;
instead of having her feet bathed, she washed her hands of life.

Stanza 3

Phir charkh par aasmaan-e-peer aaya hai Har koocha mein waqt-e-daar-o-geer aaya hai Agla sa na majma hai na agle se wo log Yaan aan ke hairat mein Dabeer aaya hai

Again the aged heaven has begun to turn;
in every street the time of seizing and arresting has come;
the gathering is not what it was, nor are the people;
coming here, Dabeer is lost in wonder.

Stanza 4

Parwane ko dhun sham ko lau teri hai Aalam mein har ek ko tag-o-dau teri hai Misbah-o-nujoom aftab-o-mahtab Jis noor ko dekhta hoon zau teri hai

The moth's passion and the candle's flame are both for You;
in the world everyone strives after You;
lamp and stars, sun and moon:
whatever light I see, its radiance is Yours.

Stanza 5

Mashhoor-e-jahan hai dastan-e-Shireen Shireen ne fida ki shah pe jaan-e-shireen Shabbir ki hai wada wafai ka bayan Goya mere munh mein hai zaban-e-shireen

The tale of Shirin is famous throughout the world:
Shirin gave her sweet life for the King.
My theme is how Shabbir kept his promise:
it is as if there were a sweet tongue in my mouth.

Stanza 6

Kya qamat-e-Ahmad ne ziya paai hai Chehre mein ajab noor ki zebai hai Mushaf pe na kyun fakhr ho is soorat ko Quran se pehle ye kitab aayi hai

What radiance the stature of Ahmad has gained!
In his face is a wondrous beauty of light.
Why should this face not take pride over the written Quran?
This book came before the Quran.

Stanza 7

Is dar pe har ek shadman rehta hai Khandan gul-e-ummeed yahan rehta hai Har fasl mein dast-e-Iftikhar-ud-Daula Neesan ki tarah guhar fishan rehta hai

At this door everyone is happy;
here the rose of hope is always in bloom;
in every season the hand of Iftikhar ud-Daula
scatters pearls like the spring rain.

Stanza 8

Men of understanding have come to this gathering:
are these Shias, or has the Verse of Light come down?
Recite your marsiya, Dabeer, and win their praise for your verse:
what fine gentlemen of Kanpur have come!

Stanza 9

Is bazm ko jannat se jo khush paate hain Rizwan liye guldasta-e-noor aate hain Kya sehn hai gulshan-e-aza-e-Shabbir Paani yahan Khizr aa ke chhirak jaate hain

Finding this gathering more pleasing than paradise,
Rizwan comes bearing a bouquet of light.
What a courtyard is this garden of mourning for Shabbir,
where Khizr comes to sprinkle water!

Stanza 10

Let every eye flow like a spring;
let my reciting of marsiyas be made fresh again;
by the grace of the Creator may such tears flow
that the monsoon cloud turns to water for shame.

Stanza 11

Ham shaan-e-Najaf na Arsh-e-anwar thehra Meezan mein ye bhari wo subuk tar thehra Is palle mein tha Najaf aur us palle mein Arsh Pahuncha wo falak pe ye zameen par thehra

Not even the radiant Throne proved equal in glory to Najaf:
in the scales this proved heavy, that the lighter;
in this pan was Najaf, and in that pan the Throne:
that one rose up to the sky, this one stayed on the earth.

Stanza 12

Hai razm sarapa to zaban aur hi hai Aur bain ke mabain bayan aur hi hai Kis darja buland hai teri fikr Dabeer Kehti hai zameen ye aasmaan aur hi hai

In battle and in portrait the language is something else,
and in the midst of lament the telling is something else again.
How lofty your thought is, Dabeer!
The earth says, 'This is another heaven.'

Stanza 13

Farman-e-Ali lauh-o-qalam tak pahuncha Fazl un ka har ek gham mein hum tak pahuncha Haath us ke laga paras-e-iman sar-e-dast Sar jis ka Yadullah ke qadam tak pahuncha

Ali's command reached as far as the Tablet and the Pen;
his grace has reached us in every sorrow;
the philosopher's stone of faith came at once into the hand
of the one whose head reached the feet of the Hand of God.

Stanza 14

Dargah-e-alamdar se behboodi hai Beemari ko waan shifa-e-khushnoodi hai Ham martaba-e-Karbala hai dargah-e-jaleel Waan khaak-e-shifa hai aur yahan oodi hai

From the shrine of the standard-bearer comes well-being;
there the sick find healing and contentment;
this noble shrine is equal in rank to Karbala:
there is the healing dust, and here the incense ash.

Stanza 15

O guide of Khizr, do not lead me astray;
O King, do not leave me beholden to beggarly hearts;
the men of wealth hide like foxes:
O Lion of God, do not make a fox of one who asks of you.

Stanza 16

Adna se jo sar jhukaye aala wo hai Jo khulq se bahrawar hai darya wo hai Kya khoob dalil hai ye khoobi ki Dabeer Samjhe jo bura aap ko achchha wo hai

He who bows his head to the lowly is the highest;
he who is rich in kindness is an ocean.
What a fine proof of goodness this is, Dabeer:
he who thinks himself bad is the good one.

Stanza 17

Aafaq se ustad-e-yagana utha Mazmoon ke jawahir ka khazana utha Insaf ka nauha hai ye bala-e-zameen Sartaj-e-fasihan-e-zamana utha

A peerless master has departed from the world;
a treasury of the jewels of poetry is gone;
this is the lament of Justice over the earth:
the crown of the eloquent of the age is gone.

Stanza 18

Let sighs flash out like lightning;
let laments tell the roar of the thunder;
let such a downpour of tears fall in grief for the King
that the monsoon cloud turns to water for shame.

Stanza 19

On that side the enemy gained ill-gotten wealth;
on this side Hurr gained the son of the Lion of God;
by Allah, Hurr became the crown on the head of the world:
he was given a robe of honour, and the kerchief of the Sinless Lady.
