About this day
Sayyid Muhammad Baqir al-Hakim was an Iraqi Shia scholar from a well-known religious family of Najaf, and a leading figure in the Iraqi Shia community after his years in exile. He was killed on 1 Rajab 1424, corresponding to 29 August 2003, by a car bomb outside the Shrine of Imam Ali (a) in Najaf as worshippers were leaving Friday prayers; many others were killed with him. The anniversary is kept by Iraqi families and by centres connected to the Hakim family, and is not marked on every community calendar.
