A person’s character is closely connected to their family, parents, and society. Parents lay the foundation of a child’s character from the very cradle, shaping them within their own spiritual and moral framework before presenting them to society. The greatness of the Prophet of Islam (pbuh) adorned with spiritual superiority, noble character, high resolve, self-sacrifice, and courage is not hidden from any Muslim, nor from any thoughtful and perceptive person. His greatness and eminence are sufficiently affirmed by the declaration of God Almighty: “O Muhammad, you are surely of great moral character.” Lady Fatimah’s noble mother was a lady named Khadijah, a wealthy woman who was engaged in trade. Many people conducted business on her behalf. When she chose the Prophet of Islam (pbuh) for trade purposes, she could not help but be deeply impressed by his honesty and truthfulness. Consequently, she sent him a proposal of marriage, for Lady Khadijah had heard from certain learned people that he was the Prophet of the Last Age. She was the first woman to respond to the Prophet’s call and placed all her wealth at his disposal without any conditions. Aisha relates that the Prophet of Islam (pbuh) would always remember Khadijah with praise. One day I said, “O Messenger of Allah, Khadijah was an elderly woman, whereas Allah has granted you better than her.” At this, the Prophet (pbuh) became displeased and said, “By Allah, He has not given me anyone better than her. Khadijah believed in me when others denied me; she affirmed my truth when others rejected me; she placed all her wealth at my disposal when others deprived me; and Allah granted me offspring through her children.”

It is narrated in traditions that whenever Jibraeel (Gabriel) (pbuh) would descend upon the Prophet of Islam (pbuh), he would say: “Convey my greetings from the Divine Presence to Khadijah, and tell her that Allah, the Blessed and Exalted, has prepared for her a beautiful palace in Paradise.” One day Jibraeel (pbuh) descended and said: “Allah, the Blessed and Exalted, has sent His greetings and has commanded that you separate yourself from Khadijah for forty days and forty nights, engaging yourself in worship and night prayers.” In obedience to the command of the Wise Lord, the Prophet of Islam (pbuh) did not go to Khadijah’s house for forty days. During this period, the Prophet (pbuh) spent his nights in prayer and worship and fasted during the days. When the forty days were completed, an angel came and presented food brought from Paradise, saying: “Tonight, partake of this heavenly food.” The Messenger of Allah (pbuh) broke his fast with that same heavenly and spiritual nourishment. As soon as the Prophet (pbuh) rose for prayer, Jibraeel (pbuh) came again and said: “O Messenger of Allah, tonight leave the recommended prayers and go to the house of Khadijah, for Allah has willed that from your loins a pure and blessed offspring be brought into existence.” Imam Ja‘far al-Sadiq (pbuh) relates that from the time Khadijah (pbuh) married the Messenger of Allah (pbuh), the women of Makkah cut off relations with her and stopped visiting her home. This caused her great sorrow. However, when she became pregnant with Lady Fatimah (pbuh), she was relieved of the pain of loneliness, became attached to the child in her womb, and would converse with her. Jibraeel came to give glad tidings to the Prophet of Islam (pbuh) and Lady Khadijah (pbuh) and said: “O Messenger of Allah, in Khadijah’s womb is a daughter through whom your lineage will continue. She will be the mother of the leaders of religion and the Imams who will be your successors after the cessation of revelation.” When the Prophet (pbuh) conveyed this message of the Lord of the worlds to Khadijah (pbuh), she was filled with great joy. Yes indeed, the Lord of the worlds had willed it so that the pure and blessed lineage of the Prophet would continue only through Fatimah (pbuh), and that this pure womb would nurture this noble and honored tree. The true descendants of the Prophet are the children of Fatimah, and the Prophet’s special love and attention toward them is the clearest proof of this.
