Hijri months begin by moon sighting, not by calculation. A date marked expected is the calculated one and may move by a day when the Centre confirms the month.

About this day

Imam Ali (a) was struck at the morning prayer in the mosque of Kufa on this night. It is not the night of his martyrdom, which comes two days later, and running the two together is an error practising families notice. Because the night begins at maghrib the evening before, calendars print it on either the eighteenth or the nineteenth. The Centre anchors it to the eve of the nineteenth and holds a majlis.

Communities differ on this

The Centre’s congregation includes Indian, Pakistani, Irani, Hazara, Iraqi and Afghan families, and they do not all keep this on the same day. The date above is the one the Centre observes; it is not a ruling on anyone else’s.
