FITRA is the condition of acceptance of the fasts as mentioned by Imam Jafar Sadiq (a) that paying of Fitra completes the fast. Thus fasts are not accepted from one who does not pay the Fitra. Fitra is the Zakat of the body, which purifies it from every spiritual dirt and protects from calamities till the next year. The quantum of Fitra is 3 kilograms per head and must be paid in form of the staple diet of that area, which must be paid on behalf of all the dependents; so much so that even if a child is born before sunset, his Fitra is also obligatory. One person must not be given less than one Fitra, but there is no limit for more. Money equal to the value of the material can also be paid? Fitra of a Sayyad can be given to the Sayyad as well as the non-Sayyad but the Fitra of a non-Sayyad cannot be given to the Sayyad. It depends upon the person who is paying the Fitra and not on whose behalf he is paying. The Fitra of the wife is obligatory on the husband even though she might herself be in a profession, but if she comes to know that her husband has not paid the Fitra, it is Mustahab for her to pay it and the same rule applies to guests as well.
