Hijri months begin by moon sighting, not by calculation. A date marked expected is the calculated one and may move by a day when the Centre confirms the month.

About this day

Arbain, also called Chehlum, is a day of mourning for Imam al-Husayn (a) and the second-largest observance of the year. Ziyarat al-Arbain is recited. In the diaspora the day is commonly kept as a five-night block running from 16 to 20 Safar, known as Khamsa-e-Arbaeen, so the Centre's programme may begin several nights before the day itself.
