لغوی اعتبار سے حج کے معنی قصد کے ہیں اور شریعت کی رو سے حج خانۂ خدا کی زیارت اور مخصوص اعمال و مناسک انجام دینے کا نام ہے۔

حج اسلام کے ۵ بنیادی ارکان اور تمام علماء امامیہ و اہل سنت کے نزدیک ضروریات دین میں شمار ہوتا ہے اور حج کا منکر کافر ہے۔ خداوند عالم کی جانب سے حج نہ کرنے والوں کی شدید الفاظ میں تنبیہ اور مذمّت کی گئی ہے۔ ارشاد ہوتا ہے(آلِ عمران: ۹۶۔۹۷)۔۔۔
اِنَّ اَوَّلَ بَيْتٍ وُّضِعَ لِلنَّاسِ لَلَّذِيْ بِبَكَّةَ مُبٰرَكًا وَّهُدًى لِّلْعٰلَمِيْنَ
Inna awwala baytin wudi'a lin-naasi lallazee bibakkata mubaarakan wahudan lil'aalameen
Most surely the first house appointed for men is the one at Mecca, blessed and a guidance for the nations.
بےشک سب سے پہلا مکان جو لوگوں کے لئے بنایا گیا ہے وہ مکّہ میں ہے مبارک ہے اور عالمین کے لئے مجسم ہدایت ہے۔
فِيْهِ اٰيٰتٌۢ بَيِّنٰتٌ مَّقَامُ اِبْرٰهِيْمَ وَمَنْ دَخَلَهٗ كَانَ اٰمِنًا وَّلِلهِ عَلَى النَّاسِ حِجُّ الْبَيْتِ مَنِ اسْتَطَاعَ اِلَيْهِ سَبِيْلًا وَّمَنْ كَفَرَ فَاِنَّ اللهَ غَنِيٌّ عَنِ الْعٰلَمِيْنَ
Feehi aayaatun bayyinaatun maqaamu ibraaheema waman dakhalahoo kaana aaminan walilhi 'alaa an-naasi hijju al-bayti mani istataa'a ilayhi sabeelan waman kafara fa-inna allaaha ghaniyyun 'ani al-'aalameen
In it are clear signs, the standing place of Ibrahim, and whoever enters it shall be secure, and pilgrimage to the House is incumbent upon men for the sake of Allah, (upon) everyone who is able to undertake the journey to it; and whoever disbelieves, then surely Allah is Self-sufficient, above any need of the worlds.
اس میں کھلی ہوئی نشانیاں مقام ابراہیمؑ ہے اور جو اس میں داخل ہوجائے گا وہ محفوظ ہوجائے گا اور اللہ کے لئے لوگوں پر اس گھر کا حج کرنا واجب ہے اگر اس راہ کی استطاعت رکھتے ہوں اور جو کافر ہوجائے تو خدا تمام عالمین سے بے نیاز ہے۔

پیغمبر اکرمؐ کا ارشاد گرامی ہے۔۔۔
مَنْ سَوَّفَ الْحَجَّ حَتّٰی یَمُوْتَ بَعَثَهُ اللهُ یَوْمَ الْقِیَامَۃِ یَهُوْدِیًّا اَوْ نَصْرَانِیًّا۔
Man sawwafa al-hajja hattaa yamoota ba'athahu allaahu yawma al-qiyaamati yahoodiyyan aw nasraaniyyaa.
One who delays performing Hajj so much that he dies, Allah will assemble him as a Jew or a Christian on the Day of Judgement.
جو شخص حج کو اتنا ٹالے کہ اسے موت آجائے تو خدا وند عالم اسے روز قیامت یہودی یا نصرانی محشور فرمائےگا۔
Amirul Momineen Hazrat Ali Ibne Abi Taalib (a) says in his will (Ref. Nahjul Balagah)…
امیر المومنین حضرت علی ابن ابی طالبؑ اپنے وصیت نامہ میں فرماتے ہیں۔۔۔
وَاللهَ اللهَ فِیْ بَیْتِ رَبِّكُمْ لَا تُخَلُّوْهُ مَا بَقِیْتُمْ فَاِنَّهٗ اِنْ تُرِكَ لَمْ تُنَاظَرُوْا۔
Wallaaha allaaha fee bayti rabbikum laa tukhalloohu maa baqeetum fa-innahoo in turika lam tunaazaroo.
Do not leave the house of Allah empty as long as you are alive. If the Ziyarat of the house of Allah is abandoned you will not be given respite.
اور اللہ سے ڈرو اپنے پروردگار کے گھر کے بارے میں، کہ جب تک زندہ ہو اسے خالی نہ ہونے دو کہ اگر اسے چھوڑ دیا گیا تو تم دیکھنے کے لائق بھی نہ رہ جاؤگے۔
