Merits of Namaz
Ameerul Momeneen Ali ibn Abi Talib (a) said Prayer elicits the descent of divine mercy. Prayer has been explained by way of a stream in which a person takes bath five times a day and hence saves himself from diseases. Similarly, prayers save us from spiritual diseases. Prayers should be given its due attention and should not be taken lightly. Imam Ja’far Sadiq (a) said: “Our intercession is not for those who considered the Prayers lightly.” It is related from the Holy Prophet (s) that he said: “One who considers prayers unimportant is not from me. By Allah, he is not from me. By Allah, he cannot reach near me at the Hauze Kausar.” (the cistern in Paradise). When a servant stands in the presence of his Lord in prayer, Allah takes pride over him over his angels. Imam Hasan Askari (a) says: “When a person readies himself to offer prayers, Allah addresses His angels thus: O my angels! Do you not see how this servant of mine is declaring and accepting my greatness and purifying me of all partners. Do you not see how he, by raising his hands is negating the polytheistic ideas of enemies. I make you witness that I will grant him honour and high and lofty palaces and respect due to my greatness and shall purify him of all his sins and evil and shall deliver him from the flames of the fire. When the servant recites “BISMILLAH HIR-RAHMA NIR-RAHEEM” surah al Hamd and the other surah Allah addresses his angels thus: O angels! Do you not see how my servant is deriving pleasure from reciting my words? I make you witness that on the day of judgment I will ask him to mention my name and ascend the grades of paradise. Then he will remember me and ascend the grades of paradise. For every alphabet I shall bestow a grade of gold, silver, precious pearls and a grade of my noor. When he goes into genuflection (ruku) Allah addresses his angels thus: O my angels! Do you not witness how my servant is humble before my majesty and greatness? Be witness that I will bestow him with greatness with my majesty and greatness. When he lifts his head from ruku, Allah tells his angels: Do you not see how he by virtue of his action is declaring that O my lord I am like a strong wall for your enemies in the same way as I am humble before you and your servants. O my angels be witness that I will make his end good and grant him a place in my garden. And when he prostrates Allah addresses His angels thus: O my angels do you not see how he is humble before me and declaring that not with-standing my honour and kingdom in this world I am weak and frail in your presence. Soon I shall elevate him with truth and keep falsehood away from him.
When he lifts his head from the first prostration Allah says: Do you not witness how, by this action of his, he is stating that I am bowing down before you and I will soon place myself in your service. When he goes into the second prostration Allah says do you not see how he is prostrating before me again and again. Now I will again send my mercy on him. When he lifts his head from the second prostration Allah says: I will surely elevate him because of his humbleness in the same way as I have elevated and accepted his prayers. These conditions of the servant and the explanation of Allah continue till the servant reaches first and second tashahhud. At this point Allah says: O my angels, the stage of meeting and worshipping me has concluded and now he is glorifying and extolling me and blessing the Holy Prophet (s). Surely, I will praise him in the kingdom of the heavens and the earth. I shall be more compassionate towards his soul than that of others. And when he sends salutations on Ahle Bait (a) in his prayers Allah says: I shall be concerned for you in the same way you are concerned for him and I shall make him, as per your wish, your intercessor. When he concludes his prayers with salaam, Allah and his angels send salaam on him. The Prophet (s) said, ‘Everything has a face, and the face of your religion is the prayer.’ (Da`aim al-Islam, V.1, Pg.133)
When you intend to Pray recite Allaahumma… Oqaddemo Ilaiyka.
