Shafa & Witr Prayers
When you accomplish the 8 unit Night Prayer, you may then offer the 2 unit Shafa Prayer and the one-unit Witr Prayer. In these 3 units, you are advised to recite, after Surah Fateha, Surah Ikhlaas once so that you may be considered as having recited the entire Qur’an. Narrations have confirmed that Surah Ikhlaas is equivalent to 1/3 of the Holy Qur’an. You may also recite in the first unit of the Shafa Prayer after Surah Fateha Surah Naas and in the second Surah Falaq. When you accomplish the Shafa Prayer, you may recite Dua-e-Shafa.
Upon accomplishment of the Shafa Prayer, you may stand up for offering the Witr Prayer. After Surah Fateha, you may recite Surah Ikhlaas once or 3 times alone or with Surah Falaq and Surah Naas. You may then raise your hands for Qunoot and implore Almighty Allah for anything you desire. In the words of Shaikh Tusi, the supplications for Qunoot are too numerous to be counted. Generally, there are not definite supplications to be said in Qunoot, for it is permissible to say anything. It is also recommended, during Qunoot, to weep, or even try to weep, out of fear of Almighty Allah and fear of His chastisement. It is also desirable to pray Almighty Allah for the good of one’s brethren-in-faith, for narrations have confirmed that one who prays for the good of 40 of his friends shall have all his prayers responded. Shaikh Saduq, in his book of Man-La-Yahduruhul-Faqih, has recorded that the Holy Prophet (s) used to say the following supplicatory prayer in the Witr Prayer…
Allaahum-mah-denee fee-man hadaiy-ta wa ‘aafe-nee fee-man ‘aa-faiy-ta wa tawal-lanee fee man tawal-laiyta wa baarik lee fee-maa a’taiy-ta waqe-nee sharra maa qa-zaiy-ta fa-inna-ka taqzee wa laa yuq-zee ‘alaiy-ka subhaa-naka rabbal baiy-te as-tagh-fero-ka wa atoo-bo ilaiy-ka wa wo-meno beka wa ata-wakkalo ‘alaiy-ka wa laa hawla wa laa quwwata illaa beka yaa raheem.
O Allah, guide me among those You have guided; grant me well-being among those You have granted well-being; take me into Your care among those You have taken into Your care; bless for me what You have given; and protect me from the evil of what You have decreed. For You decree, and none can decree over You. Glory be to You, Lord of the House (the Ka‘bah). I seek Your forgiveness and I repent to You. I believe in You and I rely upon You. There is no power and no strength except through You, O Most Merciful.
It is also highly advisable to repeat the following imploration 70 times and, meanwhile, raise the left hand for supplicating and count with the right hand…
Astaghferullah rabbi wa atoobo ilaihe.
I seek the forgiveness of Allah, my Lord, and I repent before Him.
It is also narrated that the Holy Prophet (s) used to implore for Almighty Allah’s forgiveness 70 times during the Witr Prayer and then say the following statement…
Haaza maqaamul aa’eze beka menan naar.
This is the position of one who seeks refuge in You from the fire (of Hell).
It is also narrated that Imam Ali ibn Husain Zayn ’Abidin (a) used to repeat the following word 300 times during the Witr Prayer…
Al-a’fwa, al-a’fwa.
Pardon! Pardon!
After that, the Imam (a) would say the following supplicatory prayer…
Rabbighfirli war-hamni wa atoobo ilaiyhe innaka an-tat tawwaabur raheem.
Lord, forgive me and have mercy on me, and turn to me, Surely You are the Oft-returning, the Merciful.
It is highly advisable to extend your Qunoot as long as possible. Thereafter, you go to the ritual genuflection of the prayer and when you raise your head, you should say the following supplicatory prayer that Shaikh Tusi, in his book of Tahzeeb Ahkam, reports from Imam Musa Kazim (a)…
Haazaa maqaa-mo man hasa-naato-hu ne’matoon minka wa shukro-hu za’ee-foon wa zambo-hu ‘azee-moon wa laiy-sa le-zaale-ka illaa rifqo-ka wa rah-mato-ka fa-inna-ka qulta fee ketaa-be-kal munzale ‘alaa nabiyye-kal mursa-le sallal-laaho ‘alaiy-he wa aale-hi kaa-noo qalee-lan menal laiy-le maa yah-ja’oona wa bil-as-haare-hum yas-tagh-feroo-na taala hojoo’ee wa qalla qeyaa-mee wa haazas saha-ro wa anaa as-tagh-fero-ka le-zonoo-bee is-tegh-faara man laa yaje-do le-nafse-hi zarran wa laa naf-an wa laa mautan wa laa hayaa-tan wa laa no-shoora.
This is the station of one whose good deeds are a blessing from You, whose gratitude is weak, and whose sin is great. And for all of that there is nothing except Your gentleness and Your mercy. For You have said in Your Book, revealed to Your sent Prophet may Allah bless him and his family: “They used to sleep only a little of the night, and at dawn they would seek forgiveness.” My sleep has been long and my standing (in worship) has been little. And now it is dawn, and I seek Your forgiveness for my sins seeking forgiveness like one who finds no power for himself over harm or benefit, nor death or life, nor resurrection.
You may then prostrate yourself and accomplish the prayer. After the accomplishment, you may say Tasbeeh Zahra (s). After that, you may say the following doxology…
Al-hamdo le-rabbis sabaa-hil hamdo le-faale-qil is-baah.
All praise is for the Lord of the morning. All praise is for the Splitter of the dawn.
You may then repeat the following doxology 3 times…
Subhaana rabbe-yal male-kil quddoo-sil a’zee-zil hakeem.
Glory be to my Lord the Sovereign, the All-Holy, the Mighty, the All-Wise.
You may then say the following supplicatory prayer…
Yaa haiyyo yaa qaiyyoo-mo, yaa barro yaa rahee-mo yaa ghaniyyo yaa karee-mo ur-zuqnee menat tejaa-rate a’zama-haa fazlan wa aw-sa’aha rizqan wa khaira-haa lee ‘aaqe-batan fa-inna-hu laa khaira fee-maa laa ‘aaqe-bata lahu.
O Ever-Living, O Self-Subsisting; O Most Kind, O Most Merciful; O Self-Sufficient, O Generous grant me provision through trade: the greatest in Your favor, the most expansive in sustenance, and the best in outcome for me. For there is no good in that which has no good end.
It is also highly advisable to recite Dua-e-Hazeen (The Supplication of the Sad).
You may then prostrate yourself and repeat the following doxology 5 times…
Subboo-hoon quddoo-soon rabbul malaa-e-kate war-roohe.
Holy and most Holy is the Lord of the Angels and spirits.
You may then sit and recite Aayatul Kursi after which you may return to the prostration position and repeat the aforesaid doxology 5 times again.
