Surah Mumtahina (60, 13 ayat)سورۂ ممتحنہ

The surah addresses believers, telling them not to take Allah's enemy and their own for friends, since kinship and children will not profit on the day of resurrection. Ibrahim and those with him are held up as a good example for declaring themselves clear of their people. The text then separates those who made war and drove believers out from those who did not, and closes on the same warning about friendship.

Examined One (Madani)

It is narrated from Imam Zainul Abideen (a) that if a person recites this Surah in any of his prayers (namaz), his heart will become filled with faith and belief. On the Day of Judgement, all the believing men and women will pray for him to be forgiven by Allah (s).Recitation of this Surah increases the acuity of vision and protects the reciter and his children from insanity. The Holy Prophet (s) has said that angels send salutations and pray for the forgiveness of the one who recites this Surah. If he dies on that day then he will have died as a martyr. Drinking water in which this Surah has been dissolved also acts as a cure for some ailments.

امام زین العابدینؑ نے فرمایا:جس نے نماز یومیہ یانماز مستحب میں سورۂ ممتحنہ کی تلاوت کی خدا اس کے قلب کو ایمان سے مملوکردے گا آنکھوں کو منوّر کرے گافقروفاقہ سے دوچار نہ ہوگا خود بھی جنون سے محفوظ رہےگااولاد بھی دیوانگی سے محفوظ رہے گی۔ (مجمع البیان ج۹ص۴۴۳)

بِسْمِ اللہِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِیْمِ

Bismi allaahi ar-rahmaani ar-raheem

In the Name of Allah, the most Gracious, the most Merciful.

اللہ کے نام سے (شروع کرتا ہوں) جو بڑا مہربان نہایت رحم کرنے والا ہے۔

يٰٓاَيُّهَا الَّذِيْنَ اٰمَنُوْا لَا تَتَّخِذُوْا عَدُوِّيْ وَعَدُوَّكُمْ اَوْلِيَآءَ تُلْقُوْنَ اِلَيْهِمْ بِالْمَوَدَّةِ وَقَدْ كَفَرُوْا بِمَا جَآءَكُم مِّنَ الْحَقِّ يُخْرِجُوْنَ الرَّسُوْلَ وَاِيَّاكُمْ اَنْ تُؤْمِنُوْا بِاللهِ رَبِّكُمْ اِنْ كُنْتُمْ خَرَجْتُمْ جِهَادًا فِيْ سَبِيْلِيْ وَابْتِغَآءَ مَرْضَاتِيْ تُسِرُّوْنَ اِلَيْهِمْ بِالْمَوَدَّةِ وَاَنَا۟ اَعْلَمُ بِمَآ اَخْفَيْتُمْ وَمَآ اَعْلَنْتُمْ وَمَنْ يَّفْعَلْهُ مِنْكُمْ فَقَدْ ضَلَّ سَوَآءَ السَّبِيْلِ

Yaa ayyuhaa allazeena aamanoo laa tattakhizoo 'aduwwee wa'aduwwakum awliyaa'a tulqoona ilayhim bil-mawaddati waqad kafaroo bimaa jaa'akum mina al-haqqi yukhrijoona ar-rasoola wa-iyyaakum an tu'minoo billaahi rabbikum in kuntum kharajtum jihaadan fee sabeelee wabtighaa'a mardaatee tusirroona ilayhim bil-mawaddati wa-anaa a'lamu bimaa akhfaytum wamaa a'lantum waman yaf'alhu minkum faqad dalla sawaa'a as-sabeel

O you who believe! do not take My enemy and your enemy for friends: would you offer them love while they deny what has come to you of the truth, driving out the Apostle and yourselves because you believe in Allah, your Lord? If you go forth struggling hard in My path and seeking My pleasure, would you manifest love to them? And I know what you conceal and what you manifest; and whoever of you does this, he indeed has gone astray from the straight path.

ایمان والو خبردار میرے اور اپنے دشمنوں کو دوست مت بنانا کہ تم ان کی طرف دوستی کی پیش کش کرو جب کہ انہوں نے اس حق کا انکار کر دیا ہے جو تمہارے پاس آچکا ہے اور وہ رسول کو اور تم کو صرف اس بات پر نکال رہے ہیں کہ تم اپنے پروردگار (اللہ) پر ایمان رکھتے ہو، اگر تم واقعًا ہماری راہ میں جہاد اور ہماری مرضی کی تلاش میں گھر سے نکلے ہو تو ان سے خفیہ دوستی کس طرح کر رہے ہو جب کہ میں تمہارے ظاہر و باطن سب کو جانتا ہوں اور جو بھی تم میں سے ایسا اقدام کرے گا وہ یقینًا سیدھے راستہ سے بہک گیا ہے۔

اِنْ يَّثْقَفُوْكُمْ يَكُوْنُوْا لَكُمْ اَعْدَآءً وَّيَبْسُطُوْٓا اِلَيْكُمْ اَيْدِيَهُمْ وَاَلْسِنَتَهُمْ بِالسُّوْٓءِ وَوَدُّوْا لَوْ تَكْفُرُوْنَ

In yathqafookum yakoonoo lakum a'daa'an wayabsutoo ilaykum aydiyahum wa-alsinatahum bis-soo'i wawaddoo law takfuroon

If they find you, they will be your enemies, and will stretch forth towards you their hands and their tongues with evil, and they ardently desire that you may disbelieve.

یہ اگر تمہیں پا جائیں گے تو تمہارے دشمن ثابت ہوں گے اور تمہاری طرف برائی کے ارادے سے ہاتھ اور زبان سے اقدام کریں گے اور یہ چاہیں گے کہ تم بھی کافر ہو جاؤ۔

لَنْ تَنْفَعَكُمْ اَرْحَامُكُمْ وَلَآ اَوْلَادُكُمْ يَوْمَ الْقِيٰمَةِ يَفْصِلُ بَيْنَكُمْ وَاللهُ بِمَا تَعْمَلُوْنَ بَصِيْرٌ

Lan tanfa'akum arhaamukum walaa awlaadukum yawma al-qiyaamati yafsilu baynakum wallaahu bimaa ta'maloona baseer

Your relationship would not profit you, nor your children on the day of resurrection; He will decide between you; and Allah sees what you do.

یقینًا تمہارے قرابتدار اور تمہاری اولاد روزِ قیامت کام آنے والی نہیں ہے اس دن خدا تمہارے درمیان فیصلہ کر دے گا اور وہ تمہارے اعمال سے خوب باخبر ہے۔

قَدْ كَانَتْ لَكُمْ اُسْوَةٌ حَسَنَةٌ فِيْٓ اِبْرٰهِيْمَ وَالَّذِيْنَ مَعَهٗٓ اِذْ قَالُوْا لِقَوْمِهِمْ اِنَّا بُرَءٰٓؤُا مِنْكُمْ وَمِمَّا تَعْبُدُوْنَ مِنْ دُوْنِ اللهِ كَفَرْنَا بِكُمْ وَبَدَا بَيْنَنَا وَبَيْنَكُمُ الْعَدَاوَةُ وَالْبَغْضَآءُ اَبَدًا حَتّٰى تُؤْمِنُوْا بِاللهِ وَحْدَهٗٓ اِلَّا قَوْلَ اِبْرٰهِيْمَ لِاَبِيْهِ لَاَسْتَغْفِرَنَّ لَكَ وَمَآ اَمْلِكُ لَكَ مِنَ اللهِ مِنْ شَيْءٍ رَّبَّنَا عَلَيْكَ تَوَكَّلْنَا وَاِلَيْكَ اَنَبْنَا وَاِلَيْكَ الْمَصِيْرُ

Qad kaanat lakum uswatun hasanatun fee ibraaheema wallazeena ma'ahoo iz qaaloo liqawmihim innaa bura'aa'u minkum wamimmaa ta'budoona min dooni allaahi kafarnaa bikum wabadaa baynanaa wabaynakumu al-'adaawatu wal-baghdaa'u abadan hattaa tu'minoo billaahi wahdahoo illaa qawla ibraaheema li-abeehi la-astaghfiranna laka wamaa amliku laka mina allaahi min shay'in rabbanaa 'alayka tawakkalnaa wa-ilayka anabnaa wa-ilayka al-maseer

Indeed, there is for you a good example in Ibrahim and those with him when they said to their people: Surely we are clear of you and of what you serve besides Allah; we declare ourselves to be clear of you, and enmity and hatred have appeared between us and you forever until you believe in Allah alone- but not in what Ibrahim said to his father: I would certainly ask forgiveness for you, and I do not control for you aught from Allah- Our Lord! on Thee do we rely, and to Thee do we turn, and to Thee is the eventual coming:

تمہارے لئے بہترین نمونہ عمل ابراہیمؑ اور ان کے ساتھیوں میں ہے جب انہوں نے اپنی قوم سے کہہ دیا کہ ہم تم سے اور تمہارے معبودوں سے بیزار ہیں، ہم نے تمہارا انکار کر دیا ہے اور ہمارے تمہارے درمیان بغض اور عداوت بالکل واضح ہے یہاں تک کہ تم خدائے وحدہ لاشریک پر ایمان لے آؤ علاوہ ابراہیمؑ کے اس قول کے جو انہوں نے اپنے مربّی باپ سے کہہ دیا تھا کہ میں تمہارے لئے استغفار ضرور کروں گا لیکن میں پروردگار کی طرف سے کوئی اختیار نہیں رکھتا ہوں، خدایا میں نے تیرے اوپر بھروسہ کیا ہے اور تیری ہی طرف رجوع کیا ہے اور تیری ہی طرف بازگشت بھی ہے۔

رَبَّنَا لَا تَجْعَلْنَا فِتْنَةً لِّلَّذِيْنَ كَفَرُوْا وَاغْفِرْ لَنَا رَبَّنَآ اِنَّكَ اَنْتَ الْعَزِيْزُ الْحَكِيْمُ

Rabbanaa laa taj'alnaa fitnatan lillazeena kafaroo waghfir lanaa rabbanaa innaka anta al-'azeezu al-hakeem

Our Lord! do not make us a trial for those who disbelieve, and forgive us, our Lord! surely Thou art the Mighty, the Wise.

خدایا مجھے کفاّر کے لئے فتنہ و بلا نہ قرار دینا اور مجھے بخش دینا کہ تو ہی صاحبِ عزّت اور صاحبِ حکمت ہے۔

لَقَدْ كَانَ لَكُمْ فِيْهِمْ اُسْوَةٌ حَسَنَةٌ لِّمَنْ كَانَ يَرْجُو اللهَ وَالْيَوْمَ الْاٰخِرَ وَمَنْ يَّتَوَلَّ فَاِنَّ اللهَ هُوَ الْغَنِيُّ الْحَمِيْدُ

Laqad kaana lakum feehim uswatun hasanatun liman kaana yarjoo allaaha wal-yawma al-aakhira waman yatawalla fa-inna allaaha huwa al-ghaniyyu al-hameed

Certainly there is for you in them a good example, for him who fears Allah and the last day; and whoever turns back, then surely Allah is the Self-sufficient, the Praised.

بےشک تمہارے لئے ان لوگوں میں بہترین نمونہ عمل ہے اس شخص کے لئے جو اللہ اور روزِ آخرت کا امیدوار ہے اور جو انحراف کرے گا خدا اس سے بے نیاز اور قابل حمد و ثنا ہے۔

عَسَى اللهُ اَنْ يَّجْعَلَ بَيْنَكُمْ وَبَيْنَ الَّذِيْنَ عَادَيْتُم مِّنْهُم مَّوَدَّةً وَّاللهُ قَدِيْرٌ وَّاللهُ غَفُوْرٌ رَّحِيْمٌ

'Asaa allaahu an yaj'ala baynakum wabayna allazeena 'aadaytum minhum mawaddatan wallaahu qadeerun wallaahu ghafoorun raheem

It may be that Allah will bring about friendship between you and those whom you hold to be your enemies among them; and Allah is Powerful; and Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.

قریب ہے کہ خدا تمہارے اور جن سے تم نے دشمنی کی ہے ان کے درمیان دوستی قرار دے دے کہ وہ صاحبِ قدرت ہے اور بہت بڑا بخشنے والا اور مہربان ہے۔

لَا يَنْهٰكُمُ اللهُ عَنِ الَّذِيْنَ لَمْ يُقَاتِلُوْكُمْ فِي الدِّيْنِ وَلَمْ يُخْرِجُوْكُم مِّنْ دِيَارِكُمْ اَنْ تَبَرُّوْهُمْ وَتُقْسِطُوْٓا اِلَيْهِمْ اِنَّ اللهَ يُحِبُّ الْمُقْسِطِيْنَ

Laa yanhaakumu allaahu 'ani allazeena lam yuqaatilookum fee ad-deeni walam yukhrijookum min diyaarikum an tabarroohum watuqsitoo ilayhim inna allaaha yuhibbu al-muqsiteen

Allah does not forbid you respecting those who have not made war against you on account of (your) religion, and have not driven you forth from your homes, that you show them kindness and deal with them justly; surely Allah loves the doers of justice.

وہ تمہیں ان لوگوں کے بارے میں جنہوں نے تم سے دین کے معاملہ میں جنگ نہیں کی ہے اور تمہیں وطن سے نہیں نکالا ہے اس بات سے نہیں روکتا ہے کہ تم ان کے ساتھ نیکی اور انصاف کرو کہ خدا انصاف کرنے والوں کو دوست رکھتا ہے۔

اِنَّمَا يَنْهٰكُمُ اللهُ عَنِ الَّذِيْنَ قٰتَلُوْكُمْ فِي الدِّيْنِ وَاَخْرَجُوْكُم مِّنْ دِيَارِكُمْ وَظٰهَرُوْا عَلٰٓى اِخْرَاجِكُمْ اَنْ تَوَلَّوْهُمْ وَمَنْ يَّتَوَلَّهُمْ فَاُولٰٓئِكَ هُمُ الظّٰلِمُوْنَ

Innamaa yanhaakumu allaahu 'ani allazeena qaatalookum fee ad-deeni wa-akhrajookum min diyaarikum wazaaharoo 'alaa ikhraajikum an tawallawhum waman yatawallahum fa-oolaa'ika humu az-zaalimoon

Allah only forbids you respecting those who made war upon you on account of (your) religion, and drove you forth from your homes and backed up (others) in your expulsion, that you make friends with them, and whoever makes friends with them, these are the unjust.

وہ تمہیں صرف ان لوگوں سے روکتا ہے جنہوں نے تم سے دین میں جنگ کی ہے اور تمہیں وطن سے نکال باہر کیا ہے اور تمہارے نکالنے پر دشمنوں کی مدد کی ہے کہ ان سے دوستی کرو اور جو ان سے دوستی کرے گا وہ یقینًا ظالم ہو گا۔

يٰٓاَيُّهَا الَّذِيْنَ اٰمَنُوْٓا اِذَا جَآءَكُمُ الْمُؤْمِنٰتُ مُهٰجِرٰتٍ فَامْتَحِنُوْهُنَّ اَللهُ اَعْلَمُ بِاِيْمَانِهِنَّ فَاِنْ عَلِمْتُمُوْهُنَّ مُؤْمِنٰتٍ فَلَا تَرْجِعُوْهُنَّ اِلَى الْكُفَّارِ لَا هُنَّ حِلٌّ لَّهُمْ وَلَا هُمْ يَحِلُّوْنَ لَهُنَّ وَاٰتُوْهُم مَّآ اَنْفَقُوْا وَلَا جُنَاحَ عَلَيْكُمْ اَنْ تَنْكِحُوْهُنَّ اِذَآ اٰتَيْتُمُوْهُنَّ اُجُوْرَهُنَّ وَلَا تُمْسِكُوْا بِعِصَمِ الْكَوَافِرِ وَاسْئَلُوْا مَآ اَنْفَقْتُمْ وَلْيَسْئَلُوْا مَآ اَنْفَقُوْا ذٰلِكُمْ حُكْمُ اللهِ يَحْكُمُ بَيْنَكُمْ وَاللهُ عَلِيْمٌ حَكِيْمٌ

Yaa ayyuhaa allazeena aamanoo izaa jaa'akumu al-mu'minaatu muhaajiraatin famtahinoohunna allaahu a'lamu bi-eemaanihinna fa-in 'alimtumoohunna mu'minaatin falaa tarji'oohunna ilaa al-kuffaari laa hunna hillun lahum walaa hum yahilloona lahunna wa-aatoohum maa anfaqoo walaa junaaha 'alaykum an tankihoohunna izaa aataytumoohunna ujoorahunna walaa tumsikoo bi'isami al-kawaafiri was'aloo maa anfaqtum wal-yas'aloo maa anfaqoo zaalikum hukmu allaahi yahkumu baynakum wallaahu 'aleemun hakeem

O you who believe! when believing women come to you flying, then examine them; Allah knows best their faith; then if you find them to be believing women, do not send them back to the unbelievers, neither are these (women) lawful for them, nor are those (men) lawful for them, and give them what they have spent; and no blame attaches to you in marrying them when you give them their dowries; and hold not to the ties of marriage of unbelieving women, and ask for what you have spent, and let them ask for what they have spent. That is Allah’s judgment; He judges between you, and Allah is Knowing, Wise.

ایمان والو جب تمہارے پاس ہجرت کرنے والی مومن عورتیں آئیں تو پہلے ان کا امتحان کرو کہ اللہ ان کے ایمان کو خوب جانتا ہے پھر اگر تم بھی دیکھو کہ یہ مومنہ ہیں توخبر دار انہیں کفاّر کی طرف واپس نہ کرنا۔ نہ وہ ان کے لئے حلال ہیں اور نہ یہ ان کے لئے حلال ہیں اور جو خرچہ کفاّر نے مہر کا دیا ہے وہ انہیں واپس کر دو اور تمہارے لئے کوئی حرج نہیں ہے کہ تم ان کی اجرت (مہر) دینے کے بعد ان سے نکاح کر لو اور خبردار کافر عورتوں کی عصمت پکڑ کر نہ رکھو اور جو تم نے خرچ کیا ہے وہ کفار سے لے لو اور جو انہوں نے خرچ کیا ہے وہ تم سے لے لیں کہ یہی حکم خدا ہے جس کا فیصلہ خدا نے تمہارے درمیان کیا ہے اور وہ بڑا صاحبِ علم و حکمت ہے۔

وَاِنْ فَاتَكُمْ شَيْءٌ مِّنْ اَزْوَاجِكُمْ اِلَى الْكُفَّارِ فَعَاقَبْتُمْ فَاٰتُوا الَّذِيْنَ ذَهَبَتْ اَزْوَاجُهُم مِّثْلَ مَآ اَنْفَقُوْا وَاتَّقُوا اللهَ الَّذِيْٓ اَنْتُمْ بِهٖ مُؤْمِنُوْنَ

Wa-in faatakum shay'un min azwaajikum ilaa al-kuffaari fa'aaqabtum fa-aatoo allazeena zahabat azwaajuhum mithla maa anfaqoo wattaqoo allaaha allazee antum bihee mu'minoon

And if anything (out of the dowries) of your wives has passed away from you to the unbelievers, then your turn comes, give to those whose wives have gone away the like of what they have spent, and be careful of (your duty to) Allah in Whom you believe.

اور اگر تمہاری کوئی بیوی کفاّر کی طرف چلی جائے اور پھر تم ان کو سزا دو تو جن کی بیوی چلی گئی ہے ان کا خرچ مال غنیمت میں سے دے دو اور اس اللہ سے بہرحال ڈرتے رہو جس پر ایمان رکھنے والے ہو۔

يٰٓاَيُّهَا النَّبِيُّ اِذَا جَآءَكَ الْمُؤْمِنٰتُ يُبَايِعْنَكَ عَلٰٓى اَن لَّا يُشْرِكْنَ بِاللهِ شَيْئًا وَّلَا يَسْرِقْنَ وَلَا يَزْنِيْنَ وَلَا يَقْتُلْنَ اَوْلَادَهُنَّ وَلَا يَاْتِيْنَ بِبُهْتَانٍ يَّفْتَرِيْنَهٗ بَيْنَ اَيْدِيْهِنَّ وَاَرْجُلِهِنَّ وَلَا يَعْصِيْنَكَ فِيْ مَعْرُوْفٍ فَبَايِعْهُنَّ وَاسْتَغْفِرْ لَهُنَّ اللهَ اِنَّ اللهَ غَفُوْرٌ رَّحِيْمٌ

Yaa ayyuhaa an-nabiyyu izaa jaa'aka al-mu'minaatu yubaayi'naka 'alaa an laa yushrikna billaahi shay'an walaa yasriqna walaa yazneena walaa yaqtulna awlaadahunna walaa ya'teena bibuhtaanin yaftareenahoo bayna aydeehinna wa-arjulihinna walaa ya'seenaka fee ma'roofin fabaayi'hunna wastaghfir lahunna allaaha inna allaaha ghafoorun raheem

O Prophet! when believing women come to you giving you a pledge that they will not associate aught with Allah, and will not steal, and will not commit fornication, and will not kill their children, and will not bring a calumny which they have forged of themselves, and will not disobey you in what is good, accept their pledge, and ask forgiveness for them from Allah; surely Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.

پیغمبر اگر ایمان لانے والی عورتیں آپ کے پاس اس امر پر بیعت کرنے کے لئے آئیں کہ کسی کو خدا کا شریک نہیں بنائیں گی اور چوری نہیں کریں گی، زنا نہیں کریں گی، اولاد کو قتل نہیں کریں گی اور اپنے ہاتھ پاؤں کے سامنے سے کوئی بہتان (لڑکا) لے کر نہیں آئیں گی اور کسی نیکی میں آپ کی مخالفت نہیں کریں گی تو آپ ان سے بیعت کا معاملہ کر لیں اور ان کے حق میں استغفار کریں کہ خدا بڑا بخشنے والا اور مہربان ہے۔

يٰٓاَيُّهَا الَّذِيْنَ اٰمَنُوْا لَا تَتَوَلَّوْا قَوْمًا غَضِبَ اللهُ عَلَيْهِمْ قَدْ يَئِسُوْا مِنَ الْاٰخِرَةِ كَمَا يَئِسَ الْكُفَّارُ مِنْ اَصْحٰبِ الْقُبُوْرِ

Yaa ayyuhaa allazeena aamanoo laa tatawallaw qawman ghadiba allaahu 'alayhim qad ya'isoo mina al-aakhirati kamaa ya'isa al-kuffaaru min ashaabi al-quboor

O you who believe! do not make friends with a people with whom Allah is wroth; indeed they despair of the hereafter as the unbelievers despair of those in tombs.

ایمان والو خبردار اس قوم سے ہرگز دوستی نہ کرنا جس پر خدا نے غضب نازل کیا ہے کہ وہ آخرت سے اسی طرح مایوس ہوں گے جس طرح کفاّر قبر والوں سے مایوس ہو جاتے ہیں۔

صَدَقَ اللهُ الْعَلِیُّ الْعَظِیْمُ۔

Sadaqa allaahu al-'aliyyu al-'azeem.

Almighty God the most high speaks the truth.

اللہ بزرگ و برتر نے سچ فرمایا ہے۔
