The following is quoted, yet briefly, from the book entitled Zad Ma’ad by Allamah Majlisi, may Allah show him mercy, under the title: Chapter: the Deceased Prayer: The performance of the ritual Deceased Prayer is obligatory upon every Muslim individual who knows about the death of somebody. If one Muslim performs this prayer, the other Muslims will be exempted from this obligatory duty. Unanimously agreed by all scholars, the Deceased Prayer is obligatory upon all mature Twelver Shi’ites. However, it is most famous and most acceptable that this prayer is obligatory upon even the immature who are more than 6 month old. Apparently, it is sufficiently acceptable to intend seeking nearness to Almighty Allah (rather than pronouncing the words of intention). To perform the Deceased Prayer for the dead bodies of the less than 6 month old babies who have been born alive is deemed highly recommended by some scholars, but deemed heretic by some others. However, it is precautious to neglect performing this prayer for these babies. According to the religious law, the foremost people to perform the Deceased Prayer are the nearest to the deceased people and who deserve the largest quantity of his/her inheritance. This is the most familiar law. Thus, a husband must precede others in performing the Deceased Prayer of his wife.

علامہ مجلسیؒ زاد المعاد میں نماز میت کے باب میں فرماتے ہیں: جس کا خلاصہ یہ ہے نماز میت کا پڑھنا ہر ایسے مسلمان پر واجب ہے جسے کسی مومن مسلمان کے مرنے کی اطلاع ہو جائے، اگر ان میں سے کوئی ایک مسلمان بھی یہ نماز ادا کر دے تو یہ دوسرے تمام مسلمانوں سے ساقط ہو جاتی ہے، بلا اختلاف یہ نماز ہر بالغ شیعہ اثنا عشری کے لیے پڑھنا واجب ہے اور زیادہ مشہور اور قوی امر یہی ہے کہ ۶ ماہ کے بچے کی میت پر بھی یہ نماز پڑھنا واجب ہے، ظاہر یہ ہے کہ اس نماز کو قربۃً الی اﷲ کے قصد سے ادا کرنے پر اکتفا کیا جائے اگر ۶ ماہ سے کم عمر کا بچہ زندہ پیدا ہوا ہو اور مر جائے تو بعض علماء اس پر نماز پڑھنا مستحب سمجھتے ہیں اور بعض اسے بدعت جانتے ہیں، لیکن احوط یہ ہے کہ اس پر نماز نہ پڑھی جائے۔ میت پر نماز پڑھنے کا زیادہ حق دار بنا بر قول مشہور اس کا وارث ہی ہے اور شوہر اپنی بیوی کی نماز پڑھنے میں زیادہ حق دار ہے۔

The performer of the Deceased Prayer must face the qiblah direction and stand to the right side of the head of the dead body, which must be laid down on the back. Validity of the Deceased Prayer is not conditional upon ceremonial purity; therefore, it is valid for the ceremonially impure, the menstruating women, and those who have not performed the ritual ablution (wuzu) to perform such prayers, although it is recommended for the performers of this prayer to have performed the ritual ablution. If water is not available, there is something that prevents one from using water, or there is not enough time to perform the ritual ablution, it is then highly recommended, according to traditions, to perform the dry ablution (tayammum). However, it is understood from the apparent meanings of some traditions that dry ablution should be used even if there is nothing that prevents one from performing the ritual ablution. It is also traditional that the performer of the Deceased Prayer should stand in the middle of the dead body of a man and in front of the breast of the dead body of a woman. This is the most familiar rule. Besides, the performer of the Deceased Prayer should take off the shoes and must intend performing the Deceased Prayer. He must then repeat the takbeer statement 5 times. It is also traditional that he raises his hands to the level of his ears while uttering these statements. Familiarly, he should say the following words after uttering the 1st Takbeer statement…

واجب ہے کہ نماز پڑھنے والا قبلہ رخ کھڑا ہو میت کا سراس کی داہنی جانب ہو اور میت کو پشت کے بل لٹایا جائے اس نماز میں حدث سے پاک ہونے کی شرط نہیں ہے، چنانچہ مجنب مرد، حیض والی عورت اور بے وضو شخص بھی یہ نماز پڑھ سکتا ہے، لیکن سنّت ہے کہ با وضو ہو کر پڑھی جائے، اگر پانی نہ مل سکے یا پانی کے استعمال میں کوئی امر مانع ہویا وقت تنگ ہو تو سنت ہے کہ تیمم کیا جائے اور احادیث کے مطابق کسی عذر کے بغیر بھی تیمم کیا جا سکتا ہے۔ نیز سنت ہے کہ اگر میت مرد کی ہو تو پیش نماز اس کی کمر کے مقابل کھڑا ہو اور اگر عورت کی ہے تو اس کے سینے کے مقابل کھڑے ہو کر نماز پڑھے اور سنت ہے کہ جوتے اتار کر نماز پڑھے، اور واجب ہے کہ نماز کی نیت کر کے ۵ تکبیریں پڑھی جائیں۔ سنت ہے کہ ہر تکبیر پر ہاتھوں کو کانوں کے برابر لایا جائے اور مشہور یہی ہے کہ پہلی تکبیر کے بعد کہے۔۔۔

اَشْھَدُ اَنْ لَّآ اِلٰہَ اِلَّا اللہُ وَاَشْھَدُ اَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا رَسُوْلُ اللہِ۔

Ashhadu an laa ilaaha illaa allaahu wa-ashhadu anna muhammadan rasoolu allaah.

I bear witness that there is no god save Allah and I bear witness that Muhammad is Allah’s messenger.

O Allah, (please) forgive this dead person.

اے معبود! بخش دے اس میت کو۔

Then, the 5th Takbeer statement should be uttered, and thus the prayer has been accomplished utterly and acceptably. This much prayer is sufficient.

پانچویں تکبیر کہنے پر نماز تمام ہو گئی، یہ نماز کافی ہے۔

As another method, it is familiarly better to say these words immediately after determining the intention of performing the Deceased Prayer.

لیکن قول مشہور کی بنا پر بہتر ہے نماز، یوں ادا کی جائے کہ نیت کرنے کے بعد پہلی تکبیر میں کہے۔۔۔

اَشْھَدُ اَنْ لَّآ اِلٰہَ اِلَّا اللہُ وَحْدَہٗ لَاشَرِیْکَ لَہٗ وَاَشْھَدُ اَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا عَبْدُہٗ وَرَسُوْلُہٗ اَرْسَلَہٗ بِالْحَقِّ بَشِیْرًا وَّنَذِیْرًۢا بَیْنَ یَدَیِ السَّاعَۃِ۔

Ashhadu an laa ilaaha illaa allaahu wahdahoo laashareeka lahoo wa-ashhadu anna muhammadan 'abduhoo warasooluhoo arsalahoo bil-haqqi basheeran wanazeeran bayna yadayi as-saa'ah.

I testify that there is no god except Allah. The One, there is no partner for him. I testify that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger, whom He sent with truth as a giver of glad tidings and a warner till the Judgment Day.

اَللّٰھُمَّ صَلِّ عَلٰی مُحَمَّدٍ وَّاٰلِ مُحَمَّدٍ وَبَارِکْ عَلٰی مُحَمَّدٍ وَّاٰلِ مُحَمَّدٍ وَارْحَمْ مُحَمَّدًا وَّاٰلَ مُحَمَّدٍ کَاَفْضَلِ مَاصَلَّیْتَ وَبَارَکْتَ وَتَرَحَّمْتَ عَلٰٓی اِبْرَاھِیْمَ وَاٰلِ اِبْرَاھِیْمَ اِنَّکَ حَمِیْدٌ مَّجِیْدٌ وَصَلِّ عَلٰی جَمِیْعِ الْاَنْۢبِیَآئِ وَالْمُرْسَلِیْنَ وَالشُّھَدَآئِ وَالصِّدِّیْقِیْنَ وَجَمِیْعِ عِبَادِ اللہِ الصَّالِحِیْنَ۔

Allaahumma salli 'alaa muhammadin wa-aali muhammadin wabaarik 'alaa muhammadin wa-aali muhammadin warham muhammadan wa-aala muhammadin ka-afdali maasallayta wabaarakta watarahhamta 'alaa ibraaheema wa-aali ibraaheema innaka hameedun majeedun wasalli 'alaa jamee'i al-anbiyaa'i wal-mursaleena wash-shuhadaa'i was-siddeeqeena wajamee'i 'ibaadi allaahi as-saaliheen.

O Allah, exalt Muhammad and the progeny of Muhammad and bless Muhammad and the progeny of Muhammad and have mercy on Muhammad and the progeny of Muhammad, like You exalted and blessed and had mercy on Ibrahim and the progeny of Ibrahim, indeed You are the praised and the majestic. And exalt all the prophets and messengers and martyrs and the truthful and all the righteous servants.

اے معبود! رحمت نازل فرما محمدؐ و آل محمدؑ پر اور برکت نازل فرما محمدؐ و آل محمدؑ پر اور رحم فرما محمدؐ و آل محمدؑ پر اس سے بیشتر جو رحمت کی تو نے اور برکت نازل کی تو نے اور رحم فرمایا تو نے ابراہیمؑ اور آل ابراہیمؑ پر۔ بے شک تو خوبی والا، شان والا ہے اور رحمت فرما تمام نبیوں، رسولوں، شہیدوں، صدیقوں اور اللہ کے تمام نیک بندوں پر۔

After 3rd Takbeer, it is recommended to say…

تیسری تکبیر کے بعد کہے۔۔۔

اَللّٰھُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِلْمُؤْمِنِیْنَ وَالْمُؤْمِنَاتِ وَالْمُسْلِمِیْنَ وَالْمُسْلِمَاتِ اَلْاَحْیَآئِ مِنْھُمْ وَالْاَمْوَاتِ تَابِعْ بَیْنَنَا وَبَیْنَھُمْ بِالْخَیْرَاتِ اِنَّکَ مُجِیْبُ الدَّعَوَاتِ اِنَّکَ عَلٰی کُلِّ شَیْءٍ قَدِیْرٌ۔

Allaahumma ighfir lil-mu'mineena wal-mu'minaati wal-muslimeena wal-muslimaati al-ahyaa'i minhum wal-amwaati taabi' baynanaa wabaynahum bil-khayraati innaka mujeebu ad-da'awaati innaka 'alaa kulli shay'in qadeer.

O Allah, forgive the believer men and the believer women and the Muslim men and the Muslim women, their living and their dead. And continue the connection of good between us and them; indeed You are the acceptor of supplications and You have power over everything .

After 4th Takbeer, it is recommended to say…

چوتھی تکبیر کے بعد کہے۔۔۔

اَللّٰھُمَّ اِنَّ ھٰذَا عَبْدُکَ وَابْنُ عَبْدِکَ وَابْنُ اَمَتِکَ نَزَلَ بِکَ وَاَنْتَ خَیْرُ مَنْزُوْلٍ بِہٖ۔

اَللّٰھُمَّ اِنَّا لَا نَعْلَمُ مِنْہُ اِلَّا خَیْرًا وَّاَنْتَ اَعْلَمُ بِہٖ مِنَّا۔

اَللّٰھُمَّ اِنْ کَانَ مُحْسِنًا فَزِدْ فِیْ اِحْسَانِہٖ وَاِنْ کَانَ مُسِیْٓئًا فَتَجَاوَزْ عَنْہُ وَاغْفِرْ لَہٗ۔

اَللّٰھُمَّ اجْعَلْہُ عِنْدَکَ فِیْ اَعْلٰی عِلِّیِّیْنَ وَاخْلُفْ عَلٰٓی اَھْلِہٖ فِی الْغَابِرِیْنَ وَارْحَمْہُ بِرَحْمَتِکَ یَآ اَرْحَمَ الرَّاحِمِیْنَ۔

Allaahumma inna haazaa 'abduka wabnu 'abdika wabnu amatika nazala bika wa-anta khayru manzoolin bih.

Allaahumma innaa laa na'lamu minhu illaa khayran wa-anta a'lamu bihee minnaa.

Allaahumma in kaana muhsinan fazid fee ihsaanihee wa-in kaana musee'an fatajaawaz 'anhu waghfir lah.

Allaahumma ij'alhu 'indaka fee a'laa 'illiyyeena wakhluf 'alaa ahlihee fee al-ghaabireena warhamhu birahmatika yaa arhama ar-raahimeen.

O Allah! Indeed this is Your servant and the son of Your servant and the son of Your maidservant; he has come to You, and You are the best to receive him. O Allah! Indeed we know nothing of him except good, and You know him better than we do. O Allah! If he was a doer of good, then increase his good deeds, and if he was a doer of evil, then overlook it and forgive him. O Allah! Place him with You in the highest of the highest (Illiyyin), and take his place for his family among those who remain, and have mercy upon him with Your mercy, O Most Merciful of the merciful.

اے معبود! بے شک یہ تیرا بندہ،تیرے بندے کا بیٹا اور تیری کنیز کا بیٹا تیرا مہمان ہوا ہے اور تو سب سے بہتر مہمان نواز ہے۔ اے معبود! یقیناً ہم نہیں جانتے اس سے متعلق مگر نیکی اور تو اسے ہم سے زیادہ جانتا ہے اے معبود! اگر یہ نیکو کار ہے تو اس کی نیکیوں میں اضافہ کر دے اور اگر یہ بدکار ہے تو اس سے درگذر فرما اور اسے بخش دے۔ اے معبود!تو اسے اپنے یہاں اعلیٰ علیین میں جگہ دے اور اس کے اہل وعیال میں اس کا جانشین ہو جا اور اس پر رحم فرما اپنی رحمت سےاے سب سے زیادہ رحم کرنے والے۔

The performer of the Deceased Prayer should then say one more Takbeer statement and finish the prayer.

If the dead person is female, the following words should be said by the performer of the Deceased Prayer instead…

اگر میت عورت کی ہے تو یوں کہے۔۔۔

اَللّٰھُمَّ اِنَّ ھٰذِہٖ اَمَتُکَ وَابْنَۃُ عَبْدِکَ وَابْنَۃُ اَمَتِکَ نَزَلَتْ بِکَ وَ اَنْتَ خَیْرُ مَنْزُوْلٍ بِہِ۔

اَللّٰھُمَّ اِنَّا لَا نَعْلَمُ مِنْھَا اِلَّا خَیْرًا وَّاَنْتَ اَعْلَمُ بِھَا مِنَّا۔

اَللّٰھُمَّ اِنْ کَانَتْ مُحْسِنَۃً فَزِدْفِیْ اِحْسَانِھَا وَاِنْ کَانَتْ مُسِیْئَۃً فَتَجَاوَزْ عَنْھَا وَاغْفِرْلَھَا۔

اَللّٰھُمَّ اجْعَلْھَا عِنْدَکَ فِیْٓ اَعْلٰی عِلِّیِّیْنَ وَاخْلُفْ عَلٰٓی اَھْلِھَا فِیْ الْغَابِرِیْنَ وَارْحَمْھَا بِرَحْمَتِکَ یَآاَرْحَمَ الرَّاحِمِیْنَ۔

Allaahumma inna haazihee amatuka wabnatu 'abdika wabnatu amatika nazalat bika wa anta khayru manzoolin bih.

Allaahumma innaa laa na'lamu minhaa illaa khayran wa-anta a'lamu bihaa minnaa.

Allaahumma in kaanat muhsinatan fazidfee ihsaanihaa wa-in kaanat musee'atan fatajaawaz 'anhaa waghfirlahaa.

Allaahumma ij'alhaa 'indaka fee a'laa 'illiyyeena wakhluf 'alaa ahlihaa fee al-ghaabireena warhamhaa birahmatika yaa arhama ar-raahimeen.

O Allah, indeed this is Your maidservant, daughter of Your servant and daughter of Your maidservant. She has become Your guest and You are the best of the hosts. O Allah, we do not know except good from her and You are more knowing than us. O Allah, if she had been a doer of good, increase her good deeds and if she had been an evil-doer, overlook her and forgive her. And place her with You in the highest of the highest, and provide for those she leaves behind, and have mercy on her with Your mercy, O Most Merciful of the merciful.

اے معبود! بے شک یہ تیری کنیز تیرے بندے کی بیٹی اور تیری کنیز کی بیٹی تیری مہمان ہوئی ہے اور تو بہترین مہمان نواز ہے۔اے معبود! یقیناً ہم اس کے متعلق نہیں جانتے مگر نیکی اور تو اسے ہم سے زیادہ جانتا ہے۔ اے معبود! اگر یہ نیکوکار رہی ہے تو اس کی نیکیوں میں اضافہ کردے اور اگر یہ بدکار رہی ہے تو اس سے درگذر فرما اور اسے بخش دے۔ اے معبود!تو اپنے یہاں اسے اعلیٰ علیین میں جگہ دے اور اس کے اہل وعیال میں اس کا جانشین بن جا، اس پر رحم فرما، اپنی رحمت سے اے سب سے زیادہ رحم کرنے والے۔

If the dead person is of those who are deemed enfeebled, then the performer of the Deceased Prayer should say these words…

اگر کسی بے کس کی میت ہو تو کہے۔۔۔

اَللّٰهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِلَّذِيْنَ تَابُوْا وَاتَّبَعُوْا سَبِيْلَكَ وَقِهِمْ عَذَابَ الْجَحِيْمِ۔

Allaahumma ighfir lillazeena taaboo wattaba'oo sabeelaka waqihim 'azaaba al-jaheem.

O Allah, (please) forgive those who have repented and followed Your Path and protect them against the chastisement of Hellfire.

اے معبود! ان کو بخش دے، جنہوں نے توبہ کی اور تیرے راستے پر چلے تو ان کو جہنم کے عذاب سے بچا۔

If the dead person is an immature child, the performer of the Deceased Prayer should say these words…

اگر نابالغ بچے کی میت ہو تو کہے۔۔۔

اَللّٰهُمَّ اجْعَلْهُ لِاَبَوَيْهِ وَلَنَا سَلَفًا وَفَرَطًا وَاَجْرًا۔

Allaahumma ij'alhu li-abawayhi walanaa salafan wafaratan wa-ajraa.

O Allah, (please) make him for his parents and for us a forerunner, one who goes ahead (to prepare for us), and a reward.

اے معبود! اسے قرار دے اس کے والدین کے لئے اور ہمارے لئے ہراول ذخیرہ اور اجر۔
