Surah Ma’aarij (70, 44 ayat)سورۂ معارج

A demand for the chastisement opens the text: it must befall the unbelievers and comes from Allah, the Lord of the ways of Ascent, to Whom the angels and the Spirit ascend in a day of fifty thousand years. The heaven becomes as molten copper, the mountains as tufts of wool, and no friend asks after a friend. Against man's hasty temperament it sets those who pray, keep their trusts and guard their prayer.

Ways of Ascent (Makki)

It is narrated from the Holy Prophet (s) that the reward for reciting this Surah is equivalent to the total number of people who keep up prayer and safeguard the property which has been entrusted to them. Imam Muhammad Baqir (a) has said that the one who recites this Surah will have his sins hidden on the Day of Judgement and he will enter Jannah alongside the Holy Prophet (s). If a prisoner recites this Surah, he will secure his release. Imam Jafar Sadiq (a) said that if this Surah is recited before sleeping, one keeps safe from the temptations of Shaitaan.

امام باقرؑ نے فرمایا:جس نے سورۂ معارج کی کثرت سے تلاوت کی روزِ قیامت اس کے گناہوں کے بارے میں خداوند عالم سوال نہیں کرے گا اور وہ بہشت میں محمد وآل محمدؑ کے ساتھ ہوگا۔ (مجمع البیان ج۱۰،ص۱۱۶)

بِسْمِ اللہِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِیْمِ

Bismi allaahi ar-rahmaani ar-raheem

In the Name of Allah, the most Gracious, the most Merciful.

اللہ کے نام سے (شروع کرتا ہوں) جو بڑا مہربان نہایت رحم کرنے والا ہے۔

سَاَلَ سَآئِلٌۢ بِعَذَابٍ وَّاقِعٍ

Sa'ala saa'ilun bi'azaabin waaqi'

One demanding, demanded the chastisement which must befall

ایک مانگنے والے نے واقع ہونے والے عذاب کا سوال کیا۔

لِلْكٰفِرِيْنَ لَيْسَ لَهٗ دَافِعٌ

Lil-kaafireena laysa lahoo daafi'

The unbelievers- there is none to avert it-

جس کا کافروں کے حق میں کوئی دفع کرنے والا نہیں ہے۔

مِنَ اللهِ ذِي الْمَعَارِجِ

Mina allaahi zee al-ma'aarij

From Allah, the Lord of the ways of Ascent.

یہ بلندیوں والے خدا کی طرف سے ہے۔

تَعْرُجُ الْمَلٰئِكَةُ وَالرُّوْحُ اِلَيْهِ فِيْ يَوْمٍ كَانَ مِقْدَارُهٗ خَمْسِيْنَ اَلْفَ سَنَةٍ

Ta'ruju al-malaa'ikatu war-roohu ilayhi fee yawmin kaana miqdaaruhoo khamseena alfa sanah

To Him ascend the angels and the Spirit in a day the measure of which is fifty thousand years.

جس کی طرف فرشتے اور روح الامین بلند ہوتے ہیں اس ایک دن میں جس کی مقدار پچاس ہزار سال کے برابر ہے۔

فَاصْبِرْ صَبْرًا جَمِيْلًا

Fasbir sabran jameelaa

Therefore endure with a goodly patience.

لہذا آپ بہترین صبر سے کام لیں۔

اِنَّهُمْ يَرَوْنَهٗ بَعِيْدًا

Innahum yarawnahoo ba'eedaa

Surely they think it to be far off

یہ لوگ اسے دور سمجھ رہے ہیں۔

وَنَرٰهُ قَرِيْبًا

Wanaraahu qareebaa

And We see it nigh.

اور ہم اسے قریب ہی دیکھ رہے ہیں۔

يَوْمَ تَكُوْنُ السَّمَآءُ كَالْمُهْلِ

Yawma takoonu as-samaa'u kal-muhl

On the day when the heaven shall be as molten copper

جس دن آسمان پگھلے ہوئے تانبے کے مانند ہو جائے گا۔

وَتَكُوْنُ الْجِبَالُ كَالْعِهْنِ

Watakoonu al-jibaalu kal-'ihn

And the mountains shall be as tufts of wool

اور پہاڑ دھنکے ہوئے اون جیسے۔

وَلَا يَسْئَلُ حَمِيْمٌ حَمِيْمًا

Walaa yas'alu hameemun hameemaa

And friend shall not ask of friend

اور کوئی ہمدرد کسی ہمدرد کا پرسانِ حال نہ ہو گا۔

يُّبَصَّرُوْنَهُمْ يَوَدُّ الْمُجْرِمُ لَوْ يَفْتَدِيْ مِنْ عَذَابِ يَوْمِئِذٍۢ بِبَنِيْهِ

Yubassaroonahum yawaddu al-mujrimu law yaftadee min 'azaabi yawmi'izin bibaneeh

(Though) they shall be made to see each other. The guilty one would fain redeem himself from the chastisement of that day by (sacrificing) his children

وہ سب ایک دوسرے کو دکھائے جائیں گے تو مجرم چاہے گا کہ کاش آج کے دن کے عذاب کے بدلے اس کی اولاد کو لے لیا جائے۔

وَصَاحِبَتِهٖ وَاَخِيْهِ

Wasaahibatihee wa-akheeh

And his wife and his brother

اور بیوی اور بھائی کو۔

وَفَصِيْلَتِهِ الَّتِيْ تُؤْوِيْهِ

Wafaseelatihi allatee tu'weeh

And the nearest of his kinsfolk who gave him shelter

اور اس کنبہ کو جس میں وہ رہتا تھا۔

وَمَنْ فِي الْاَرْضِ جَمِيْعًا ثُمَّ يُنْجِيْهِ

Waman fee al-ardi jamee'an thumma yunjeeh

And all those that are in the earth, (wishing) then (that) this might deliver him.

اور روئے زمین کی ساری مخلوقات کو اور اسے نجات دے دی جائے۔

كَلَّآ اِنَّهَا لَظٰى

Kallaa innahaa lazaa

By no means! Surely it is a flaming fire

ہرگز نہیں یہ آتش جہنّم ہے۔

نَزَّاعَةً لِّلشَّوٰى

Nazzaa'atan lilshshawaa

Dragging by the head

کھال اتار دینے والی۔

تَدْعُوْ مَنْ اَدْبَرَ وَتَوَلّٰى

Tad'oo man adbara watawallaa

It shall claim him who turned and fled (from truth)

ان سب کو آواز دے رہی ہے جو منہ پھیر کر جانے والے تھے۔

وَجَمَعَ فَاَوْعٰى

Wajama'a fa-aw'aa

And amasses (wealth) then shuts it up.

اور جنہوں نے مال جمع کر کے بند کر رکھا تھا۔

اِنَّ الْاِنْسَانَ خُلِقَ هَلُوْعًا

Inna al-insaana khuliqa haloo'aa

Surely man is created of a hasty temperament;

بےشک انسان بڑا لالچی ہے۔

اِذَا مَسَّهُ الشَّرُّ جَزُوْعًا

Izaa massahu ash-sharru jazoo'aa

Being greatly grieved when evil afflicts him

جب تکلیف پہنچ جاتی ہے تو فریادی بن جاتا ہے۔

وَاِذَا مَسَّهُ الْخَيْرُ مَنُوْعًا

Wa-izaa massahu al-khayru manoo'aa

And miserly when good befalls him

اور جب مال مل جاتا ہے تو بخیل ہو جاتا ہے۔

اِلَّا الْمُصَلِّيْنَ

Illaa al-musalleen

Except those who pray

علاوہ ان نمازیوں کے۔

اَلَّذِيْنَ هُمْ عَلٰى صَلَاتِهِمْ دَآئِمُوْنَ

Allazeena hum 'alaa salaatihim daa'imoon

Those who are constant at their prayer

جو اپنی نمازوں کی پابندی کرنے والے ہیں۔

وَالَّذِيْنَ فِيْٓ اَمْوَالِهِمْ حَقٌّ مَّعْلُوْمٌ

Wallazeena fee amwaalihim haqqun ma'loom

And those in whose wealth there is a fixed portion.

اور جن کے اموال میں ایک مقررہ حق معین ہے۔

لِلسَّآئِلِ وَالْمَحْرُوْمِ

Lis-saa'ili wal-mahroom

For him who begs and for him who is denied (good)

مانگنے والے کے لئے اور نہ مانگنے والے کے لئے۔

وَالَّذِيْنَ يُصَدِّقُوْنَ بِيَوْمِ الدِّيْنِ

Wallazeena yusaddiqoona biyawmi ad-deen

And those who accept the truth of the judgment day

اور جو لوگ روزِ قیامت کی تصدیق کرنے والے ہیں۔

وَالَّذِيْنَ هُم مِّنْ عَذَابِ رَبِّهِم مُّشْفِقُوْنَ

Wallazeena hum min 'azaabi rabbihim mushfiqoon

And those who are fearful of the chastisement of their Lord-

اور جو اپنے پروردگار کے عذاب سے ڈرنے والے ہیں۔

اِنَّ عَذَابَ رَبِّهِمْ غَيْرُ مَاْمُوْنٍ

Inna 'azaaba rabbihim ghayru ma'moon

Surely the chastisement of their Lord is (a thing) not to be felt secure of-

بےشک عذابِ پروردگار بے خوف رہنے والی چیز نہیں ہے۔

وَالَّذِيْنَ هُمْ لِفُرُوْجِهِمْ حٰفِظُوْنَ

Wallazeena hum lifuroojihim haafizoon

And those who guard their private parts

اور جو اپنی شرمگاہوں کی حفاظت کرنے والے ہیں۔

اِلَّا عَلٰٓى اَزْوَاجِهِمْ اَوْ مَا مَلَكَتْ اَيْمَانُهُمْ فَاِنَّهُمْ غَيْرُ مَلُوْمِيْنَ

Illaa 'alaa azwaajihim aw maa malakat aymaanuhum fa-innahum ghayru maloomeen

Except in the case of their wives or those whom their right hands possess- for these surely are not to be blamed

علاوہ اپنی بیویوں اور کنیزوں کے کہ اس پر ملامت نہیں کی جاتی ہے۔

فَمَنِ ابْتَغٰى وَرَآءَ ذٰلِكَ فَاُولٰٓئِكَ هُمُ الْعٰدُوْنَ

Famani ibtaghaa waraa'a zaalika fa-oolaa'ika humu al-'aadoon

But he who seeks to go beyond this, these it is that go beyond the limits-

پھر جو اس کے علاوہ کا خواہشمند ہو وہ حد سے گزر جانے والا ہے۔

وَالَّذِيْنَ هُمْ لِاَمٰنٰتِهِمْ وَعَهْدِهِمْ رٰعُوْنَ

Wallazeena hum li-amaanaatihim wa'ahdihim raa'oon

And those who are faithful to their trusts and their covenant

اور جو اپنی امانتوں اور عہد کا خیال رکھنے والے ہیں۔

وَالَّذِينَ هُمْ بِشَهٰدٰتِهِمْ قَآئِمُوْنَ

Wallazeena hum bishahaadaatihim qaa'imoon

And those who are upright in their testimonies

اور جو اپنی گواہیوں پر قائم رہنے والے ہیں۔

وَالَّذِيْنَ هُمْ عَلٰى صَلَاتِهِمْ يُحَافِظُوْنَ

Wallazeena hum 'alaa salaatihim yuhaafizoon

And those who keep a guard on their prayer

اور جو اپنی نمازوں کا خیال رکھنے والے ہیں۔

اُولٰٓئِكَ فِيْ جَنّٰتٍ مُّكْرَمُوْنَ

Oolaa'ika fee jannaatin mukramoon

Those shall be in gardens, honored.

یہی لوگ جنّت میں باعزّت طریقہ سے رہنے والے ہیں۔

فَمَالِ الَّذِيْنَ كَفَرُوْا قِبَلَكَ مُهْطِعِيْنَ

Famaali allazeena kafaroo qibalaka muhti'een

But what is the matter with those who disbelieve that they hasten on around you

پھر ان کافروں کو کیا ہو گیا ہے کہ آپ کی طرف بھاگے چلے آرہے ہیں۔

عَنِ الْيَمِيْنِ وَعَنِ الشِّمَالِ عِزِيْنَ

'Ani al-yameeni wa'ani ash-shimaali 'izeen

On the right hand and on the left, in sundry parties?

دائیں بائیں سے گروہ در گروہ۔

اَيَطْمَعُ كُلُّ امْرِیٍٔ مِّنْهُمْ اَنْ يُّدْخَلَ جَنَّةَ نَعِيْمٍ

Ayatma'u kullu imri'in minhum an yudkhala jannata na'eem

Does every man of them desire that he should be made to enter the garden of bliss?

کیا ان میں سے ہر ایک کی طمع یہ ہے کہ اسے جنّت النعیم میں داخل کر دیا جائے۔

كَلَّآ اِنَّا خَلَقْنٰهُم مِّمَّا يَعْلَمُوْنَ

Kallaa innaa khalaqnaahum mimmaa ya'lamoon

By no means! Surely We have created them of what they know.

ہرگز نہیں انہیں تو معلوم ہے کہ ہم نے انہیں کس چیز سے پیدا کیا ہے۔

فَلَآ اُقْسِمُ بِرَبِّ الْمَشٰرِقِ وَالْمَغٰرِبِ اِنَّا لَقٰدِرُوْنَ

Falaa uqsimu birabbi al-mashaariqi wal-maghaaribi innaa laqaadiroon

But nay! I swear by the Lord of the Easts and the Wests that We are certainly able

میں تمام مشرق و مغرب کے پروردگار کی قسم کھا کر کہتا ہوں کہ ہم قدرت رکھنے والے ہیں۔

عَلٰٓى اَن نُّبَدِّلَ خَيْرًا مِّنْهُمْ وَمَا نَحْنُ بِمَسْبُوْقِيْنَ

'Alaa an nubaddila khayran minhum wamaa nahnu bimasbooqeen

To bring instead (others) better than them, and We shall not be overcome.

اس بات پر کہ ان کے بدلے ان سے بہتر افراد لے آئیں اور ہم عاجز نہیں ہیں۔

فَذَرْهُمْ يَخُوْضُوْا وَيَلْعَبُوْا حَتّٰى يُلٰقُوْا يَوْمَهُمُ الَّذِيْ يُوْعَدُوْنَ

Fazarhum yakhoodoo wayal'aboo hattaa yulaaqoo yawmahumu allazee yoo'adoon

Therefore leave them alone to go on with the false discourses and to sport until they come face to face with that day of theirs with which they are threatened;

لہذا انہیں چھوڑ دیجئے یہ اپنے باطل میں ڈوبے رہیں اور کھیل تماشہ کرتے رہیں یہاں تک کہ اس دن سے ملاقات کریں جس کا وعدہ کیا گیا ہے۔

يَوْمَ يَخْرُجُوْنَ مِنَ الْاَجْدَاثِ سِرَاعًا كَاَنَّهُمْ اِلٰى نُصُبٍ يُّوْفِضُوْنَ

Yawma yakhrujoona mina al-ajdaathi siraa'an ka-annahum ilaa nusubin yoofidoon

The day on which they shall come forth from their graves in haste, as if they were hastening on to a goal

جس دن یہ سب قبروں سے تیزی کے ساتھ نکلیں گے جس طرح کسی پرچم کی طرف بھاگے جا رہے ہوں۔

خَاشِعَةً اَبْصَارُهُمْ تَرْهَقُهُمْ ذِلَّةٌ ذٰلِكَ الْيَوْمُ الَّذِيْ كَانُوْا يُوْعَدُوْنَ

Khaashi'atan absaaruhum tarhaquhum zillatun zaalika al-yawmu allazee kaanoo yoo'adoon

Their eyes cast down; disgrace shall overtake them; that is the day which they were threatened with.

ان کی نگاہیں جھکی ہوں گی اور ذلت ان پر چھائی ہو گی اور یہی وہ دن ہو گا جس کا ان سے وعدہ کیا گیا ہے۔

صَدَقَ اللهُ الْعَلِیُّ الْعَظِیْمُ۔

Sadaqa allaahu al-'aliyyu al-'azeem.

Almighty God the most high speaks the truth.

اللہ بزرگ و برتر نے سچ فرمایا ہے۔
