Surah Balad (90, 20 ayat)سورۂ بلد

Man is created in distress, the text says, and it asks whether he thinks no one has power over him or sees him. It lists what he has been given — two eyes, a tongue and two lips, and two conspicuous ways — then defines the uphill road he has not attempted: freeing a slave, and feeding an orphan or a poor man on a day of hunger.

The Holy Prophet (s) has said that whoever recites this Surah will be safe from the Wrath of Allah (s) on the Day of Reckoning. Those who recite this Surah in their waajib namaz, will be counted among the pious and will be given a high status in the company of the Prophets and martyrs. Writing this Surah as a talisman and tying it around the neck of a child keeps him safe from illness. Water in which this Surah has been dissolved, if put in the nostrils, acts as a cure for nose ailments.

امام صادقؑ نے فرمایا:جوشخص واجب نماز میں سورۂ بلد کی تلاوت کرے وہ دنیا میں صالح مشہور ہوگا اور آخرت میں مقرّب بارگاہ محشور ہوگااورانبیاء، شہداء،صلحاء،کے رفقاء میں شمار ہوگا۔ (مجمع البیان،ج۱۰ص۳۵۷)

بِسْمِ اللہِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِیْمِ

Bismi allaahi ar-rahmaani ar-raheem

In the Name of Allah, the most Gracious, the most Merciful.

اللہ کے نام سے (شروع کرتا ہوں) جو بڑا مہربان نہایت رحم کرنے والا ہے۔

لَآ اُقْسِمُ بِهٰذَا الْبَلَدِ

Laa uqsimu bihaazaa al-balad

Nay! I swear by this city.

میں اس شہر کی قسم کھاتا ہوں۔

وَاَنْتَ حِلٌّۢ بِهٰذَا الْبَلَدِ

Wa-anta hillun bihaazaa al-balad

And you shall be made free from obligation in this city-

اور تم اسی شہر میں تو رہتے ہو۔

وَوَالِدٍ وَّمَا وَلَدَ

Wawaalidin wamaa walad

And the begetter and whom he begot.

اور تمہارے باپ آدمؑ اور ان کی اولاد کی قسم۔

لَقَدْ خَلَقْنَا الْاِنْسَانَ فِيْ كَبَدٍ

Laqad khalaqnaa al-insaana fee kabad

Certainly We have created man to be in distress.

ہم نے انسان کو مشقت میں رہنے والا بنایا ہے۔

اَيَحْسَبُ اَن لَّنْ يَّقْدِرَ عَلَيْهِ اَحَدٌ

Ayahsabu an lan yaqdira 'alayhi ahad

Does he think that no one has power over him?

کیا اس کا خیال یہ ہے کہ اس پر کوئی قابو نہ پا سکے گا۔

يَقُوْلُ اَهْلَكْتُ مَالًا لُّبَدًا

Yaqoolu ahlaktu maalan lubadaa

He shall say: I have wasted much wealth.

کہ وہ کہتا ہے کہ میں نے بے تحاشہ مال صرف کیا ہے۔

اَيَحْسَبُ اَن لَّمْ يَرَهٗٓ اَحَدٌ

Ayahsabu an lam yarahoo ahad

Does he think that no one sees him?

کیا اس کا خیال ہے کہ اس کو کسی نے نہیں دیکھا ہے۔

اَلَمْ نَجْعَل لَّهٗ عَيْنَيْنِ

Alam naj'al lahoo 'aynayn

Have We not given him two eyes

کیا ہم نے اس کے لئے دو آنکھیں نہیں قرار دی ہیں۔

وَلِسَانًا وَّشَفَتَيْنِ

Walisaanan washafatayn

And a tongue and two lips

اور زبان اور دو ہونٹ بھی۔

وَهَدَيْنٰهُ النَّجْدَيْنِ

Wahadaynaahu an-najdayn

And pointed out to him the two conspicuous ways?

اور ہم نے اسے دونوں راستوں کی ہدایت دی ہے۔

فَلَا اقْتَحَمَ الْعَقَبَةَ

Falaa iqtahama al-'aqabah

But he would not attempt the uphill road

پھر وہ گھاٹی پر سے کیوں نہیں گزرا۔

وَمَآ اَدْرٰكَ مَا الْعَقَبَةُ

Wamaa adraaka maa al-'aqabah

And what will make you comprehend what the uphill road is?

اور تم کیا جانو یہ گھاٹی کیا ہے۔

فَكُّ رَقَبَةٍ

Fakku raqabah

(It is) the setting free of a slave

کسی گردن کا آزاد کرانا۔

اَوْ اِطْعٰمٌ فِيْ يَوْمٍ ذِيْ مَسْغَبَةٍ

Aw it'aamun fee yawmin zee masghabah

Or the giving of food in a day of hunger

یا بھوک کے دن میں کھانا کھلانا۔

يَتِيْمًا ذَا مَقْرَبَةٍ

Yateeman zaa maqrabah

To an orphan, having relationship

کسی قرابتدار یتیم کو۔

اَوْ مِسْكِيْنًا ذَا مَتْرَبَةٍ

Aw miskeenan zaa matrabah

Or to the poor man lying in the dust.

یا خاکسار مسکین کو۔

ثُمَّ كَانَ مِنَ الَّذِيْنَ اٰمَنُوْا وَتَوَاصَوْا بِالصَّبْرِ وَتَوَاصَوْا بِالْمَرْحَمَةِ

Thumma kaana mina allazeena aamanoo watawaasaw bis-sabri watawaasaw bil-marhamah

Then he is of those who believe and charge one another to show patience, and charge one another to show compassion.

پھر وہ ان لوگوں میں شامل ہو جاتا جو ایمان لائے اور انہوں نے صبر اور مرحمت کی ایک دوسرے کو نصیحت کی۔

اُولٰٓئِكَ اَصْحٰبُ الْمَيْمَنَةِ

Oolaa'ika ashaabu al-maymanah

These are the people of the right hand.

یہی لوگ خوش نصیبی والے ہیں۔

وَالَّذِيْنَ كَفَرُوْا بِاٰيٰتِنَا هُمْ اَصْحٰبُ الْمَشْئَمَةِ

Wallazeena kafaroo bi-aayaatinaa hum ashaabu al-mash'amah

And (as for) those who disbelieve in our communications, they are the people of the left hand.

اور جن لوگوں نے ہماری آیات سے انکار کیا ہے وہ بد بختی والے ہیں۔

عَلَيْهِمْ نَارٌ مُّؤْصَدَةٌ

'Alayhim naarun mu'sadah

On them is fire closed over.

انہیں آگ میں ڈال کر اسے ہر طرف سے بند کر دیا جائے گا۔

صَدَقَ اللهُ الْعَلِیُّ الْعَظِیْمُ۔

Sadaqa allaahu al-'aliyyu al-'azeem.

Almighty God the most high speaks the truth.

اللہ بزرگ و برتر نے سچ فرمایا ہے۔
