Surah Gaashiya (88, 26 ayat)

It opens by asking whether the news of the overwhelming calamity has reached the hearer, then sets two kinds of faces side by side: downcast and toiling ones, and happy ones in a lofty garden with a flowing fountain. The text turns outward to the camels, the heaven, the mountains and the earth as things to consider, and tells the addressee he is a reminder, not a watcher.

Overwhelming Event (Makki)

It is narrated from the Holy Prophet (s) that the one who recites this Surah will not face difficulty in the accounting of deeds on the Day of Judgement and Allah (s) will show Mercy to him and save him from Jahannam. Reciting this Surah near a baby removes fright from him and stops his crying. Imam Ali (a) has said that if this Surah is recited over a part of the body which is paining, the pain will go away and if recited over food items, it removes any bad effects of that food.

In the Name of Allah, the most Gracious, the most Merciful.

Hal ataaka hadeethu al-ghaashiyah

Has not there come to you the news of the overwhelming calamity?

Wujoohun yawma'izin khaashi'ah

(Some) faces on that day shall be downcast

'Aamilatun naasibah

Laboring, toiling

Taslaa naaran haamiyah

Entering into burning fire

Tusqaa min 'aynin aaniyah

Made to drink from a boiling spring.

Laysa lahum ta'aamun illaa min daree'

They shall have no food but of thorns

Laa yusminu walaa yughnee min joo'

Which will neither fatten nor avail against hunger.

Wujoohun yawma'izin naa'imah

(Other) faces on that day shall be happy

Lisa'yihaa raadiyah

Well-pleased because of their striving

Fee jannatin 'aaliyah

In a lofty garden

Laa tasma'u feehaa laaghiyah

Wherein you shall not hear vain talk.

Feehaa 'aynun jaariyah

Therein is a fountain flowing

Feehaa sururun marfoo'ah

Therein are thrones raised high

Wa-akwaabun mawdoo'ah

And drinking-cups ready placed

Wanamaariqu masfoofah

And cushions set in a row

Wazaraabiyyu mabthoothah

And carpets spread out.

Afalaa yanzuroona ilaa al-ibili kayfa khuliqat

Will they not then consider the camels, how they are created?

Wa-ilaa as-samaa'i kayfa rufi'at

And the heaven, how it is reared aloft

Wa-ilaa al-jibaali kayfa nusibat

And the mountains, how they are firmly fixed

Wa-ilaa al-ardi kayfa sutihat

And the earth, how it is made a vast expanse?

Fazakkir innamaa anta muzakkir

Therefore do remind, for you are only a reminder.

Lasta 'alayhim bimusaytir

You are not a watcher over them;

Illaa man tawallaa wakafar

But whoever turns back and disbelieves,

Fayu'azzibuhu allaahu al-'azaaba al-akbar

Allah will chastise him with the greatest chastisement.

Inna ilaynaa iyaabahum

Surely to Us is their turning back,

Thumma inna 'alaynaa hisaabahum

Then surely upon Us is the taking of their account.

Sadaqa allaahu al-'aliyyu al-'azeem.

Almighty God the most high speaks the truth.
